(15) The messenger of יהוה called to Abraham a second time from heaven, (16) and said, “By Myself I swear, יהוה declares: Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your favored one, (17) I will bestow My blessing upon you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes. (18) All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed My command.”

Our God and God of our fathers, remember us favorably before You and be mindful of us for deliverance and compassion from the eternal high heavens. Remember in our behalf, Adonoy, our God: the love of our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants; the covenant, the kindness, and the oath which You swore to our father Abraham on Mount Moriah, and the binding of Isaac, his son on the altar, as it is written in Your Torah.

Master of the Universe! May it be Your will Adonoy, our God and God of our fathers, to recall for our sake the covenant of our fathers. Just as our father, Avraham suppressed his compassion for his only son and would have slaughtered him to do Your will, so may Your compassion suppress Your anger against us; and may Your compassion prevail over Your [other] attributes, to deal with us more leniently than the letter of Your law. Deal with us, Adonoy, our God, kindly and with compassion. In Your great goodness, turn Your fierce anger away from Your people, and from Your city, from Your land, and from Your territorial heritage. Fulfill for us, Adonoy, our God, the promise You made, through Your servant Moshe, as was said, “I will recall My covenant with Yaakov, also My covenant with Yitzchak, and also My covenant with Avraham will I recall; and I will recall the land.”
Sarah's Death
(א) וַיִּהְיוּ֙ חַיֵּ֣י שָׂרָ֔ה מֵאָ֥ה שָׁנָ֛ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְשֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים שְׁנֵ֖י חַיֵּ֥י שָׂרָֽה׃ (ב) וַתָּ֣מׇת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִסְפֹּ֥ד לְשָׂרָ֖ה וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃ (ג) וַיָּ֙קׇם֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֣י מֵת֑וֹ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־בְּנֵי־חֵ֖ת לֵאמֹֽר׃

(א) ויהיו חיי שרה מאה שנה ועשרים שנה ושבע שנים. לְכָךְ נִכְתַּב שָׁנָה בְּכָל כְּלָל וּכְלָל, לוֹמַר לְךָ שֶׁכָּל אֶחָד נִדְרָשׁ לְעַצְמוֹ, בַּת ק' כְּבַת כ' לְחֵטְא, מַה בַּת כ' לֹא חָטְאָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי אֵינָהּ בַּת עֳנָשִׁין, אַף בַּת ק' בְּלֹא חֵטְא, וּבַת כ' כְּבַת ז' לְיֹפִי: (ב) שני חיי שרה. כֻּלָּן שָׁוִין לְטוֹבָה:
(1) ויהיו חיי שרה מאה שנה ועשרים שנה ושבע שנים AND THE LIFE OF SARAH WAS 127 YEARS (literally, 100 years, 20 years and 7 years) — The reason the word שנה is written at every term is to tell you that each term must be explained by itself as a complete number: at the age of one hundred she was as a woman of twenty as regards sin — for just as at the age of twenty one may regard her as having never sinned, since she had not then reached the age when she was subject to punishment, so, too, when she was one hundred years old she was sinless — and when she was twenty she was as beautiful as when she was seven (Genesis Rabbah 58:1). (2) שני חיי שרה THE YEARS OF SARAH’S LIFE — The word years is repeated and without a number to indicate that they were all equally good.
The Role of Satan in Sarah's Death
(ג) לספוד לשרה ולבכתה. וְנִסְמְכָה מִיתַת שָׂרָה לַעֲקֵדַת יִצְחָק לְפִי שֶׁעַל יְדֵי בְּשׂוֹרַת הָעֲקֵדָה, שֶׁנִּזְדַּמֵּן בְּנָהּ לִשְׁחִיטָה וְכִמְעַט שֶׁלֹּא נִשְׁחַט, פָּרְחָה נִשְׁמָתָהּ מִמֶּנָּה וּמֵתָה:
(3) לספוד לשרה ולבכותה TO BEWAIL SARAH AND TO WEEP FOR HER — The narrative of the death of Sarah follows immediately on that of the Binding of Isaac, because through the announcement of the Binding — that her son had been made ready for sacrifice and had almost been sacrificed — she received a great shock (literally, her soul flew from her) and she died (Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 32).
"I would have been slaughtered"
בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה הָלַךְ הַשָּׂטָן אֵצֶל שָׂרָה וְנִדְמָה לָהּ כִּדְמוּת יִצְחָק. כֵּיוָן שֶׁרָאֲתָה אוֹתוֹ אָמְרָה לוֹ: בְּנִי, מֶה עָשָׂה לְךָ אָבִיךָ? אָמַר לָהּ: נְטַלַנִי אָבִי וְהֶעֱלַנִי הָרִים וְהוֹרִידַנִי בְקָעוֹת וְהֶעֱלַנִי לְרֹאשׁ הַר אֶחָד וּבָנוּ מִזְבֵּחַ וְסִדֵּר הַמַּעֲרָכָה וְהֶעֱרִיךְ אֶת הָעֵצִים וְעָקַד אוֹתִי עַל גַּבֵּי הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וְלָקַח אֶת הַסַּכִּין לְשָׁחֳטֵנִי. וְאִלּוּלֵי שֶׁאָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אַל תִּשְׁלַח יָדְךָ אֶל הַנַּעַר, כְּבָר הָיִיתִי נִשְׁחָט. לֹא הִסְפִּיק לִגְמֹר אֶת הַדָּבָר עַד שֶׁיָּצְאָה נִשְׁמָתָהּ, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וַיָּבֹא אַבְרָהָם לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה וְלִבְכֹּתָהּ. מֵהֵיכָן בָּא? מֵהַר הַמּוֹרִיָּה.
While all this was transpiring, Satan visited Sarah in the guise of Isaac. When she saw him she asked: “What did your father do to you, my son?” He replied: “My father led me over mountains and through valleys until we finally reached the top of a certain mountain. There he erected an altar, arranged the firewood, bound me upon the altar, and took a knife to slaughter me. If the Holy One, blessed be He, had not called out, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, I would have been slaughtered.” He had hardly completed relating what had transpired when she fainted and died, as it is written: And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her (ibid. 23:2). From where did he come? From Moriah.
"And you expect to be happy?!"

...Abraham was not happy in this world of Mine and you seek to be happy! A son was born to him when he was a hundred years old, and in the end the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: “Take now your son… and offer him… for a burnt-offering” (Genesis 22:2)! Abraham went a distance of three days journey. After three days he perceived a cloud resting on the top of a mountain. Said he to Isaac: ‘ My son, do you see what I see?’ ‘Yes,’ he answered him. ‘ What do you see?’ he inquired. He told him: ‘I see a cloud resting on the top of the mountain.’ He said to Ishmael and Eliezer: ‘Do you see anything?’ ‘No,’ they answered him…

He took Isaac his son and led him up mountains and down hills. He took him up on one of the mountains, built an altar, arranged the wood, prepared the altar pile, and took the knife to slay him. Had not an angel from heaven called him, Isaac would have already been slain. There is proof that this is so, for Isaac returned to his mother and she said to him: ‘Where have you been, my son?’ Said he to her: ‘My father took me and led me up mountains and down hills,’ etc. ‘Alas,’ she said, ‘for the son of a hapless woman! Had it not been for the angel you would by now have been slain!’ ‘Yes,’ he said to her.

Thereupon she uttered six cries, corresponding to the six blasts of the shofar. It has been said: She had scarcely finished speaking when she died. Hence it is written, And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her (Genesis 23:2). Where did he come from? Rabbi Judah son of Rabbi Shimon said: He came from Mount Moriah...

"Should I tell Sarah?": Abraham's Internal Conversation
וַיַּרְא אֶת הַמָּקוֹם מֵרָחוֹק. אָמַר אַבְרָהָם, מָה אֶעֱשֶׂה, אִם אֲגַלֶּה לְשָׂרָה, נָשִׁים דַּעְתָּן קַלָּה עֲלֵיהֶן בְּדָבָר קָטָן, כָּל שֶׁכֵּן בְּדָבָר גָּדוֹל כָּזֶה. וְאִם לֹא אֲגַלֶּה לָהּ וְאֶגְנְבֶנּוּ מִמֶּנָּה בְּעֵת שֶׁלֹּא תִרְאֶה אוֹתוֹ, תַּהֲרֹג אֶת עַצְמָהּ. מֶה עָשָׂה? אָמַר לְשָׂרָה, תַּקְּנִי לָנוּ מַאֲכָל וּמִשְׁתֶּה וְנֹאכַל וְנִשְׂמַח. אָמְרָה לוֹ: מַה הַיּוֹם מִיּוֹמַיִם וּמַה טִּיבָהּ שֶׁל שִׂמְחָה זוֹ. אָמַר לָהּ: זְקֵנִים כְּמוֹתֵנוּ נוֹלַד לָהֶם בֵּן בְּזִקְנוּתָם, כְּדַי לֶאֱכֹל וְלִשְׁתּוֹת וְלִשְׂמֹחַ. הָלְכָה וְתִקְּנָה הַמַּאֲכָל. כְּשֶׁהָיוּ בְּתוֹךְ הַמַּאֲכָל, אָמַר לָהּ: אַתְּ יוֹדַעַת כְּשֶׁאֲנִי בֶּן שָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנִים הִכַּרְתִּי אֶת בּוֹרְאִי, וְהַנַּעַר הַזֶּה גָּדוֹל וְלֹא נֶחֱנַךְ, וְיֵשׁ מָקוֹם אֶחָד רָחוֹק מִמֶּנּוּ מְעַט שֶׁשָּׁם מְחַנְּכִין אֶת הַנְּעָרִים, אֶקָּחֶנּוּ וַאֲחַנְּכֶנּוּ שָׁם. אָמְרָה לוֹ: לֵךְ לְשָׁלוֹם.

And he saw the place from afar off. Abraham had asked himself: What shall I do? If I tell Sarah all about it, consider what may happen. After all, a woman’s mind becomes distraught over insignificant matters; how much more disturbed would she become if she heard something as shocking as this! However, if I tell her nothing at all, and simply steal him away from her when she is not looking, she will kill herself. What did he do? He said to Sarah: “Prepare some food and drink that we may eat and rejoice.” “But why is this day different from other days?” she asked. “What are you celebrating?” He replied: “When a couple our age has a son, it is fitting, indeed, that they should eat, drink, and rejoice.” Whereupon she prepared the food. While they were eating, he said to her: “When I was a child of three, I already knew my Creator, yet this child is growing up and still has had no instruction. There is a place a short distance away where children are being taught, I will take him there.” She answered: “Go in peace.”

Can't Tell Sarah!
מִיָּד, וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר. וְלָמָּה בַּבֹּקֶר? אָמַר, שֶׁמָּא שָׂרָה תַחֲזֹר בְּדִבּוּרָהּ וְלֹא תַנִּיחֵנִי, אָקוּם בְּהַשְׁכָּמָה קֹדֶם שֶׁתָּקוּם הִיא.
Immediately: And Abraham arose early in the morning (ibid., v. 3). Why did he arise early in the morning? He had said to himself: Perhaps Sarah will change her mind and not permit me to go; I will arise before she does.”
"Do not tell my mother!"
וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר אָמַר לוֹ הָאֱלֹהִים וַיַּעֲקֹד אֶת יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ. כְּשֶׁבָּא לִשְׁחֹט, אָמַר לוֹ: אַבָּא, אָסְרֵנִי יָדַי וְרַגְלַי, מִפְּנֵי שֶׁהַנֶּפֶשׁ חֲצוּפָה הִיא וּכְשֶׁאֶרְאֶה אֶת הַמַּאֲכֶלֶת שֶׁמָּא אֶזְדַּעְזַע וְיִפָּסֵל הַקָּרְבָּן, בְּבַקָּשָׁה מִמְּךָ אַל תַּעַשׂ בִּי מוּם. מִיָּד, וַיִּשְׁלַח אַבְרָהָם אֶת יָדוֹ וַיִּקַּח אֶת הַמַּאֲכֶלֶת לִשְׁחֹט. אָמַר לוֹ: אַבָּא, לֹא תוֹדִיעַ אֶת אִמִּי כְּשֶׁהִיא עוֹמֶדֶת עַל הַבּוֹר אוֹ כְּשֶׁהִיא עוֹמֶדֶת עַל הַגַּג, שֶׁמָּא תַפִּיל אֶת עַצְמָהּ וְתָמוּת. מִיָּד בָּנוּ שְׁנֵיהֶם אֶת הַמִּזְבֵּחַ וַעֲקָדוֹ עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ, וְנָטַל אֶת הַסַּכִּין כְּדֵי לְשָׁחֳטוֹ עַד שֶׁיֵּצֵא מִמֶּנּוּ רְבִיעִית דָּמוֹ. וּבָא הַשָּׂטָן וְדָחַף יָדוֹ שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם וְנָפְלָה הַסַּכִּין מִיָּדוֹ. וְכֵיוָן שֶׁשָּׁלַח יָדוֹ לְקַחְתָּהּ, יָצְאָה בַת קוֹל וְאָמְרָה לוֹ מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם, אַל תִּשְׁלַח יָדְךָ אֶל הַנַּעַר. וְאִלּוּלֵי כֵן, כְּבָר הָיָה נִשְׁחָט.
And they came to the place which God had told him of … and bound Isaac, his son (ibid., v. 9). As Abraham was about to slaughter him, Isaac cried out: “Father, bind my hands and feet, for the will to live is strong within me, and when I see the knife descending, I may tremble and the offering may become defective (as a result of the knife slipping). I implore you not to make me a blemished offering.” The Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son (ibid., v. 10). Isaac said to him: “Father, do not tell my mother about this while she is standing at the edge of a pit or a roof lest she hurl herself down and die.” After they had constructed the altar, Abraham bound Isaac upon it and took the knife in hand to slaughter him until a fourth of a measure of blood would flow from his body, Satan appeared and pushed Abraham’s hand, causing the knife to fall. As he reached out to grasp the knife again, a voice emanated from heaven, saying: Lay not thy hand upon the lad (ibid., w. 13). If this had not happened, Isaac would certainly have been sacrificed.
