Biblical Angels in "Neviim" (Prophets)
Joshua's Angel

(13) And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went to him and said unto him: "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?" (14) And he said: "No, but I am captain of the host of Adonai; I am now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him: "What do you say, my lord, to his servant?" (15) And the captain of Adonai's host said to Joshua: "Take off your shoe from your feet; for the place upon which you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.

Gideon's Angel

(11) And the angel of Adonai came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, that belonged to Yoash the Aviezrite; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. (12) And the angel of Adonai appeared to him, and said to him: "Adonai is with you, you mighty man of valor." (13) And Gideon said to him, "Oh, my lord, if Adonai is with us, why then has all of this befallen us? And where are all of God's wondrous works which our ancestors told us of, saying: "Did not Adonai bring us up from Egypt?" But now, Adonai has cast us off and has delivered us into the hand of Midian."(14) And Adonai turned towards him, and said: "Go with this strenght of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; have I not sent you?!"

The Angel Who Appeared to the Wife of Manoah, Mother of Samson (Haftarah for Parashat Naso. EC p. 813)

(3) And the angel of Adonai appeared to the woman and said to her: "Behold now, you are barren, and have not borne any children; but you shall conceive and bear a son. (4) Now therefore beware and do not drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. (5) For you shall conceive and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite consecrated to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines." (6) Then the woman came and told her husband, saying: "A man of God came to me and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I did not ask him where he came from, neither did he tell me his name; (7) but he said to me: "Behold, you shalt conceive and bear a son; and now do not drink any wine or strong drink, and do not eat any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite consecrated to God from the womb to the day of his death." " (8) Then Manoah entreated Adonai, and said: "Oh, Adonai, I pray of You, let the man of God whom You sent, come again to us and teach us what we shall do to the child that shall be born." (9) And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field; but Manoah, her husband, was not with her. (10) And the woman hurried and ran and told her husband, and said to him: "Behold, the man appeared to me, that came to me that day." (11) And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him: "Are you the man who spoke to the woman?" And he said: "I am." ("Ani") (12) And Manoah said: "Now when your word comes to pass, what shall be the rule for the child, and what shall be done with him?" (13) And the angel of Adonai said to Manoah: "Of all that I said to the woman, let her beware. (14) She may not eat of any thing that comes from the grapevine, neither let her drink wine nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe." (15) And Manoah said to the angel of Adonai: "I pray thee, let us detain you, that we may prepare a kid goat for you (to eat)." (16) And the angel of Adonai said to Manoah: "Even though you detain me, I will not eat of your bread; and if you will prepare a burnt-offering, you must offer it to Adonai." For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of Adonai. (17) And Manoah said to the angel of Adonai: "What is your name, that when your words come to pass we may honor you?" (18) And the angel of Adonai said to him: "Why are you asking about my name, seeing that it is hidden?" (19) So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock to Adonai; and [the angel] acted wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on. (20) For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Adonai ascended in the flame of the altar; and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell upon their faces to the ground. (21) But the angel of Adonai did not appear any more to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Adonai. (22) And Manoah said to his wife: "We shall surely die, because we have seen God."

(23) But his wife said to him: ‘If Adonai had meant to take our lives, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from us, nor let us see all of these things; and He would not have made such an announcement to us." (24) The woman bore a son, and named him Samson (Shimshon); and the child grew up and Adonai blessed him. (25) And the spirit of Adonai first moved him in the encampment of Dan (Machaneh Dan) between Zorah and Eshtaol.

(1) In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw Adonai sitting upon a throne, high and lofty, and His robe filled the Temple. (2) Above Him stood the seraphim attending him; each one had six wings: with two of them, he covered his face, with two of them, he covered his feet, and with two of them, he would fly. (3) And one would call to the other, and say, "Holy, holy, holy, is Adonai of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glorious presence." (4) And the doorposts would shake at the sound of the one who called, and the House kept filling with smoke. (5) Then I said: "Woe is me! I am lost! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of impure lips. Yet my eyes have seen the King, Adonai of hosts." (6) Then one of the seraphim flew over to me, with a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. (7) He touched my mouth with it, and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt shall depart and your sin shall be purged away (atoned for)." (8) Then I heard the voice of Adonai saying: "Who shall I send & who will go for us?" Then I said: "Here I am; send me. Hinnini; sh'lacheni."

(1) Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the Kevar River that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. (2) In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of King Yehoyachin’s captivity, (3) the word of Adonai came expressly to Ezekiel the son of Buzi the Kohen, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Kevar River and the hand of Adonai was there upon him. (4) And I looked, and, behold, a stormy wind came out of the north, a great cloud, with a fire flashing up, so that a brightness was round about it; and out of the middle of it, as the color of electrum out of the midst of the fire. (5) And out of the middle of it came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the likeness of a man. (6) And every one had four faces, and every one of them had four wings. (7) And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot; and they sparkled like the color of burnished brass. (8) And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and as for the faces and wings of them, four, (9) their wings were joined one to another; they did not turn when they went; every one of them went straight forward. (10) As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man; and four had the face of a lion on the right side; and four had the face of an ox on the left side; and four also the face of an eagle. (11) Thus were their faces; and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies. (12) And every one of them went straight forward; wherever the spirit was to go, they went; they did not turned when they went. (13) As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like coals of fire, burning like the appearance of torches; it flashed up and down among the living creatures; and there was brightness to the fire, and out of the fire, lightning went forth. (14) And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning. (15) Now, as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel at the bottom hard by the living creatures, at the four faces of them. (16) The appearance of the wheels and their work was like the color of a beryl; and the four of them had one likeness; and their appearance and their work was like a wheel within a wheel. (17)When they went, they went towards their four sides; they did not turn when they went. (18) As for their rings, they were high and they were dreadful; and the four of them had their rings full of eyes round about. (19) And when the living creatures went, the wheels went hard by them; and when the living creatures were lifted up from the bottom, the wheels were lifted up. (20) Wherever the spirit (ruach) was to go, as the spirit was to go there, so they went; and the wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. (21) When those went, these went, and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels. (22) And over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of a firmament, like the color of the terrible ice, stretched forth over their heads above. (23) And under the firmament, their wings conformed to each other; this one of them had two which covered, and that one of them had two which covered their bodies. (24) And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters, like the voice of the Almighty (Shaddai), a noise of tumult like the noise of a host; when they stood, they let down their wings. (25) For, when there was a voice above the firmament that was over their heads, as they stood, they let down their wings. (26) And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone; and upon the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man upon it above. (27) And I saw as the color of electrum, as the appearance of fire round about enclosing it, from the appearance of his loins and upward; and from the appearance of his loins and downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness round about him. (28) As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory (k'vod) of Adonai. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spoke."

Ezekiel's Angels-Part 2 (end of Haftarah for Shavuot Day 1) (EC p. 1324)

(12) Then a spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great rushing noise: "Blessed be the glory (k'vod) of Adonai from His place."

,(8) I saw in the night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle-trees that were in the bottom; and behind him there were horses, red, sorrel, and white. (9) Then I said: "O my lord, what are these?’"And the angel that spoke with me said to me: "I will show you what these are." (10) And the man that stood among the myrtle-trees answered and said: "These are they whom Adonai sent to walk back and forth through the earth." (11) And they answered the angel of Adonai that stood among the myrtle-trees and said: "We have walked back and forth through the earth, and, behold, all of the earth sits still, and is at rest." (12) Then the angel of Adonai spoke and said, "O Adonai of hosts, how long will You not have compassion on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which You have had indignation these 70 years?" (13) And Adonai answered the angel that spoke with me with good words, even comforting words— (14) so the angel that spoke with me said to me: "Proclaim, saying: "This is what Adonai of hosts says: "I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy; (15) and I am very sorely displeased with the nations that are at ease; for I was but a little displeased, and they helped for evil." (16) Therefore, this is what Adonai says: "I return to Jerusalem with compassion. My house shall be built in it," says Adonai of hosts, "and a line shall be stretched forth over Jerusalem." (17) Again, proclaim, saying: "This is what Adonai of hosts says: "My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; and Adonai shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem."

(1) And I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and behold there were four horns. (2) And I said to the angel that spoke with me: "What are these?" And he said to me: "These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem." (3) And Adonai showed me four craftsmen. (4) Then I said: "What are these coming to do?" And he spoke, saying: "These—the horns which scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head—these then have come to frighten them, to cast down the horns of the nations, which lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it." (5) And I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and behold there was a man with a measuring line in his hand. (6) Then I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me: "To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its breadth thereof, and what is its length thereof." (7) And, behold, the angel that spoke with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,

(1) And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Adonai, and the Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. (2) And Adonai said to the Satan: "Adonai will rebuke you, O Satan, Adonai who has chosen Jerusalem will rebuke thee; isn't man a brand plucked out of the fire?" (3) Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. (4) And he answered and spoke to those that stood before him, saying: "Take the filthy garments off of him." And to him, he said: "Behold, I am causing your iniquity to pass away from you, and I will clothe you with robes." (5) And I said: "Let them set a fair mitre upon his head." So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments; and the angel of Adonai stood by. (6) And the angel of Adonai forewarned Joshua, saying: (7) "This is what Adonai of hosts is saying: "If thou will walk in My ways, and if you will keep My charge, and will also judge My house, and will also keep My courts, then I will give you free access among these that stand by. (8) Hear now, O Joshua the Kohen Gadol, you and your fellows that sit before you; for you are men that are a sign; for, behold, I will bring forth My servant the Shoot. (9) For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone are seven facets; behold, I will engrave the engraving on it, said Adonai of hosts: And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. (10) In that day, said Adonai of hosts, every person shall call to his neighbor under the vine and under the fig-tree.

(1) And the angel who spoke with me returned and woke me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep. (2) And he said to me: "What do you see?" And I said: "I see a lampstand all of gold, with a bowl above it. The lamps on it are seven in numbers, and the lamps above it have seven pipes; (3) and by it are two olive trees, one on the right side of the bowl, and the other on the left side of it." (4) And I answered and spoke to the angel aho spoke with me, saying: "What do these things mean, my lord?" (5) Then the angel who spoke with me answered and said to me: "Do you not know what those things mean?" And I said: "No, my lord." (6) Then he explained to me as follows: "This is the word of Adonai to Zerubbavel, saying: "Not by might, and not by power, but by My spirit alone," said Adonai of hosts. (7) Who are you, O great mountain in the path of Zerubbavel? You shall become level ground. For he shall produce that excellent stone; it shall be greeted with shouts of, "Beautiful! Beautiful!"
