Dwellers of Houses of Clay / R Shelomo ibn Gabirol
1021-1058
From hebrew: Haim Ovadia
Dwellers of houses of clay, why do you raise your eyes?
There is no advantage for humans over beasts!
We should know that we are but worms,
Our backs are made of clay, and how can our heart be haughty?
What is one's gain, as he is destined for the grave?
That will be his reward, even if a thousand years he lives.
See, if he rebels he will be consumed with raging ire,
He will be burned by fire and saved not by gold.
Miserable man, open your eyes and watch:
Whence you come from and how will you leave.
Your end, you poor pauper, is that of Jonah's plant,
Which came about over night and not even to the morning survived.
You would be better off without being created to harvest toil
How can you seek greatness while you are caught in the [hunter's] trap?

R Yehudah ben Shemuel ibn Abbas
Tell my mother that the sun of her joy has set [lit.: turned away]
The son she bore after ninety years
Has been consumed by knife and fire
Where can I find consolation for her, where?
I feel for my mother, who will cry and weep.
From the knife my words hum
Please sharpen it, dad, and my ropes
Tighten them, and as the fire consumes my flesh
Take with you what is left of my ashes
And tell Sarah, “This is Yitzhak’s fragrance”

Nameless in the Rain / Avraham Halfi (1904-1980)
(Translation: Haim Ovadia)
I know not words
Of which a prayer is born.
All the words were lost in my voice
And became dark stillness.
But my eyes still see
The glint in a child’s eye.
And more my eyes see,
A star, none like it in shine.
And worried-face mothers
Leading their children to the light.
What will be of them? What will be?
Hear their breathing joy.
As springtime which seems to never leave.
I bow down to the image of God
Who is concealed from me eyes.
Please do not harm the innocent,
They know not why.
Lightning strikes a tree,
Which bears its fruit innocently.
Please do not harm the innocent,
They know not why man desecrates his/His image.
I know not words
Of which a prayer is born.
All the words were lost in my voice
And became dark stillness.

Who by Fire / Leonard Cohen
And who by fire, who by water
Who in the sunshine, who in the night time
Who by high ordeal, who by common trial
Who in your merry merry month of may
Who by very slow decay
And who shall I say is calling?
And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate
Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt
Who by avalanche, who by powder
Who for his greed, who for his hunger
And who shall I say is calling?
And who by brave assent, who by accident
Who in solitude, who in this mirror
Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand
Who in mortal chains, who in power
And who shall I say is calling?

Winter 23 / EZ
Lyrics: Erez Sharon, Odiya Azulay, Natan Yosef Avidan
I remember being afraid to leave the apartment
Someone above fell asleep on guard
And go tell the world what happened here
And who will believe the disaster of Hasbara [PR], like orphans
I remember that my brother asked me where is God
And I asked who even cares for the soldiers
I remember we donated food and clothes for them
There was no left or right
I’m calling Abba but he isn’t reachable
In pain, it’s a million times harder to believe
That there is god in the cemeteries
We are the children
Of winter 23
Pity whose house theyburned down
Morality, whose head they cut off,
With great pain, sorrow and grief
Suddenly my leaders stop talking
They ruined my sabbath and the messiah is late
Remember we bet on when it would end
I want to talk to Abba
About everything that happened today
Once again I feel alone
Abba, make space [Makom]
Anyone above listening
Anyone, anywhere
Will remain with me forever
And will fulfill my dream
Master of the world, if we speak frankly
Sometimes I don’t have the strength to live here
Come and tell me what I came to do here
Because this is a f... nightmare
I don’t understand, what? Did you try to teach me a lesson?
You wanted to tell me what is allowed and forbidden
What? You were in pain because of what happened on Yom Kippur?
Then I am not to blame, and certainly not the majority
I swear in Abba that our heart is good
I saw up close the girl who couldn’t understand
Why you took her brother and mother
I sat with the guys on the grass
And I was surprised they managed to talk
But not even one of them was looking for action
Abba, every one of them lost a friend
They say you are a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and abundant with kindness
So come and help me get up from within despair, hatred and sadness
They talk about a future redemption, for now I only see destruction
So come talkto me Abba, before you take me away too...
