Seeing the Size of the Cloth: From Broken-Heartedness to Joy

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,

you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.

You must wake up with sorrow.

You must speak to it till your voice catches the thread of all sorrows and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,

only kindness that ties your shoes and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,

only kindness that raises its head from the crowd of the world to say It is I you have been looking for,

and then goes with you everywhere like a shadow or a friend.

Suffering is the proximate cause of faith.
Faith is the proximate cause of elation.
Elation is the proximate cause of joy.
Joy is the proximate cause of calmness.
Calmness is the proximate cause of happiness.
Happiness is the proximate cause of concentration.
Concentration is the proximate cause of seeing and knowing reality.

Seeing the good in someone is the proximate cause of lovingkindess (metta)

The proximate faith is considered to be suffering. This is the peculiar teaching...so what is it that happens within some people, some hearts, some minds, so that one comes from that space-one emerges from that space into greater faith, trust, confidence, clarity--these are all synonyms actually. Something quite magical that happens, a kind of alchemy-purification where one takes suffering and somehow born out of it is faith, and I think it has to something to do with this --"seeing the size of the cloth," seeing a larger universe, a bigger picture, maybe having an immense space of heart within which to hold the suffering or the sorrow, because the result of that quality of faith is a also very special kind of happiness. Faith in this sense doesn't mean maybe what we might associate it to mean with earlier Judeo-Christian religions perhaps- but mostly its a sense of as the literal translation from the Pali is to "place your heart upon." [Faith here] means 1) knowing you have a heart 2) knowing it is a valuable, valueable thing when you place your heart somewhere--that it is no small gift 3) being able to make that gift, to place your heart somewhere, to make that kind of offering means confidence-trust-clarity-- a joyful giving that honors yourself in the giving. a very very special kind of happiness.

(א) אַחַר לֵב נִשְׁבָּר בָּא שִׂמְחָה וְזֶה סִימָן אִם הָיָה לוֹ לֵב נִשְׁבָּר כְּשֶׁבָּא אַחַר כָּךְ לְשִׂמְחָה

After broken heartedness comes simcha--this is a sign of having had a broken heart, that after it comes simcha.

(א) לֵב נִשְׁבָּר וְעַצְבוּת אֵינוֹ עִנְיָן אֶחָד כְּלָל כִּי לֵב נִשְׁבָּר הוּא בַּלֵּב, אֲבָל עַצְבוּת הוּא בָּא מִן הַטְּחוֹל וְעַצְבוּת שֶׁהוּא מֵהַטְּחוֹל הִיא סִטְרָא אַחֲרָא וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא שׂוֹנֵא אוֹתָהּ אֲבָל לֵב נִשְׁבָּר הִיא חָבִיב לִפְנֵי הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ כִּי לֵב נִשְׁבָּר יָקָר מְאד מְאד בְּעֵינָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ וְהָיָה טוֹב שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ לֵב נִשְׁבָּר כָּל הַיּוֹם אַךְ אֲנָשִׁים כְּעֶרְכְּכֶם יְכוֹלִין לָבוֹא מִלֵּב נִשְׁבָּר לְעַצְבוּת עַל כֵּן צְרִיכִין לְיַחֵד אֵיזֶה שָׁעָה בַּיּוֹם שֶׁיִּהְיֶה לוֹ לֵב נִשְׁבָּר דְּהַיְנוּ לְהִתְבּוֹדֵד וּלְשַׁבֵּר לִבּוֹ לְפָנָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ כַּמְבאָר בְּמָקוֹם אַחֵר אֲבָל שְׁאָר כָּל הַיּוֹם כֻּלּוֹ יִהְיֶה רַק בְּשִׂמְחָה וְעַל זֶה הִזְהִיר אוֹתָנוּ כַּמָּה פְּעָמִים לְהִתְאַמֵּץ וּלְהִתְגַּבֵּר שֶׁלּא יִהְיֶה לָנוּ לֵב נִשְׁבָּר רַק אֵיזֶה שָׁעָה בַּיּוֹם וְעַצְבוּת כְּלָל לא וּשְׁאָר כָּל הַיּוֹם יִהְיֶה בְּשִׂמְחָה

A broken heart and depression are not the same thing at all, because a broken heart... Depression comes from the side of evil and is hated by G-d. But a broken heart is very dear and precious to G-d.”‘ [Cf. Psalms 51:19: “The sacrifice to G-d is a broken spirit; G-d will not despise a broken, shattered heart.”] It would be very good to be broken-hearted all day. But for the average person, this can easily degenerate into depression. You should therefore set aside some time each day for heartbreak. You should isolate yourself with a broken heart before G-d for a given time. But the rest of the day you should be joyful.

(א) מַה שֶּׁהָעוֹלָם רְחוֹקִים מֵהַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ וְאֵינָם מִתְקָרְבִים אֵלָיו יִתְבָּרַךְ, הוּא רַק מֵחֲמַת שֶׁאֵין לָהֶם יִשּׁוּב־הַדַּעַת, וְאֵינָם מְיַשְּׁבִין עַצְמָן. וְהָעִקָּר – לְהִשְׁתַּדֵּל לְיַשֵּׁב עַצְמוֹ הֵיטֵב, מָה הַתַּכְלִית מִכָּל הַתַּאֲווֹת וּמִכָּל עִנְיְנֵי הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, הֵן תַּאֲווֹת הַנִּכְנָסוֹת לַגּוּף, הֵן תַּאֲווֹת שֶׁחוּץ לַגּוּף, כְּגוֹן כָּבוֹד, וְאַזַי בְּוַדַּאי יָשׁוּב אֶל ה':

(ב) אַךְ דַּע, שֶׁעַל־יְדֵי מָרָה־שְׁחוֹרָה אִי אֶפְשָׁר לְהַנְהִיג אֶת הַמֹּחַ כִּרְצוֹנוֹ, וְעַל־כֵּן קָשֶׁה לוֹ לְיַשֵּׁב דַּעְתּוֹ. רַק עַל־יְדֵי הַשִּׂמְחָה יוּכַל לְהַנְהִיג הַמֹּחַ כִּרְצוֹנוֹ, וְיוּכַל לְיַשֵּׁב דַּעְתּוֹ, כִּי שִׂמְחָה הוּא עוֹלָם הַחֵרוּת, בִּבְחִינַת (ישעיה נה): כִּי בְשִׂמְחָה תֵצֵאוּ, שֶׁעַל־יְדֵי שִׂמְחָה נַעֲשִׂין בֶּן־חוֹרִין וְיוֹצְאִין מִן הַגָּלוּת. וְעַל־כֵּן כְּשֶׁמְּקַשֵּׁר שִׂמְחָה אֶל הַמֹּחַ, אֲזַי מֹחוֹ וְדַעְתּוֹ בֶּן־חוֹרִין, וְאֵינוֹ בִּבְחִינַת גָּלוּת, וַאֲזַי יוּכַל לְהַנְהִיג אֶת מֹחוֹ כִּרְצוֹנוֹ וּלְיַשֵּׁב דַּעְתּוֹ, מֵאַחַר שֶׁמֹּחוֹ בְּחֵרוּת וְאֵינוֹ בְּגָלוּת. כִּי עַל־יְדֵי גָּלוּת אֵין הַדַּעַת מְיֻשָּׁב, כְּמוֹ שֶׁדָּרְשׁוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (מגילה יב:) עַל בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וּמוֹאָב, דִּמְיָתְבָא דַּעְתַּיְהוּ מֵחֲמַת שֶׁלֹּא הָלְכוּ בְּגָלוּת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (ירמיה מח): שַׁאֲנַן מוֹאָב מִנְּעוּרָיו וְכוּ', וּבַגּוֹלָה לֹא הָלָךְ, עַל כֵּן עָמַד טַעְמוֹ בּוֹ וְכוּ':

The main reason why people are far from God is because their minds are not settled and they do not pause to consider the purpose of their existence. But when a person is happy, his mind becomes settled and he is able to understand things clearly.

Someone who is anxious and depressed finds it impossible to direct his thoughts where he wants. It is hard for him to calm and settle his mind. Only when a person is happy can he direct his thoughts wherever he wants and settle his mind.

Joy is the world of freedom - "for you shall go out with joy " (Isaiah 55:12) . Through joy we become free and leave our exile. When a person maintains a happy, joyous attitude, his mind and thoughts become free and he is no longer in exile. He can then direct his thoughts as he wants and settle his mind so as to focus on his goal and draw close to God.

אמרי אין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורים.

Rabbi Yohanan went to visit him.

[Rabbi Yohanan] said to him: "Are your sufferings dear to you?"

He [Rabbi Hiya Bar Abba] replied: "Not them and not their reward."

He [Rabbi Yohanan] said: "Give me your hand". He gave him his hand and stood him up [i.e. he was healed.]

Rabbi Yohanan was sick.

Rabbi Hanina went to visit him.

He said to him: "Is suffering dear to you?" He replied: "Not them and not their reward."

He said: "Give me your hand" And he stood him up.

Why doesn't Rabbi Yonhanan stand himself up?
