8th Grade Siyyum, Final Project

Unit 7 - Tzionut

Tzionut—Zionism—צִיּוֹנוּת

We believe in the importance of Israel, Zionism and the Hebrew language. The modern State of Israel is a place where Jewish values come to life, and a home for Jews from around the world. We see spiritual meaning in the existence of the state, and are proud of its continued growth.

Big Ideas

Tzionut is like a Rube Goldberg machine. The reveal at the end of our core Jewish values is they all come to life in Tzionut.

Essential Questions

What does it mean to call Israel the Jewish home(land)?

“The modern State of Israel is a place where Jewish values come to life…” – Tzionut core Jewish Value

Instructions:

Upon arriving in Israel, you will receive a copy of these instructions.

1. As you travel through the country, identify moments when you experience each of our core Jewish values.

2. Then, find an object that connects to that moment. For example, if you are on a meaningful hike and you feel a connection to God (ואהבת) or some piece of Torah you’ve learned (תלמוד תורה) ,maybe a small rock you find on the hike could be a good symbol for you.

(If you are at Masada or some other historical site, you can’t take even a small pebble!)Your objects might be any sort of item: a ticket stub, a song, a food wrapper, a poster, etc.

3. In your journal, write three or four sentences explaining what the object is and what it is supposed to symbolize for you/remind you about the CJV in question.

4. Safely store these items (if they are not electronic) and bring them home. You will have 7 total items. When you arrive home, we will use these objects for our final Maker Space project. It is essential that you have 7 deliberately selected items. As you collect your items, check off the core Jewish values so you know which values remain.
