A Word about a Word - 1 - עשת

On Sefaria, I am taking the opportunity to explore words on these some-weekly sheets.

Ok, so today we are going to start with the word עשת, and get a pure translation, better, in my opinion, than the common JPS translation in use on Sefaria.

(6) So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him: ‘What meanest thou that thou sleepest? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will have mercy upon us, that we perish not.’

So we have our first look at the word. It is translated as "have mercy" in my 1985 pocket-ed. JPS. Wrong.

(5) A contemptible brand in the thought of him that is at ease, A thing ready for them whose foot slippeth.

(4) His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his dust; In that very day his thoughts perish.

(28) They are waxen fat, they are become sleek; Yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; They plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, That they might make it to prosper; And the right of the needy do they not judge.

(14) His hands are as rods of gold Set with beryl; His body is as polished ivory Overlaid with sapphires.
