(1) A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd;
I lack nothing.
(2) God makes me lie down in green pastures;
God leads me to water in places of repose;-a
(3) God renews my life;
God guides me in right paths
as befits God's name.
(4) Though I walk through a valley of deepest darkness,-b
I fear no harm, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.

(5) You spread a table for me in full view of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my drink is abundant.
(6) Only goodness and steadfast love shall pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for many long years.

A song of David The Rabbis said: Wherever it says: “A song of David,” he would play [his musical instrument] and afterwards the Shechinah would rest on him. It is a song to bring the holy spirit upon David. And, wherever it says: “Of David, a song,” the Shechinah rested on him [first] and then he recited a song.
The Lord is my shepherd In this desert where I am going, [therefore] I am confident that I will lack nothing.
The Gemara asks: What is the blessing of the song mentioned in the mishna? Rav Yehuda said: It is the blessing that begins with: They shall praise You, Lord, our God. And Rabbi Yoḥanan said that one also recites: The breath of all living, a prayer that follows the verses of praise [pesukei dezimra]. The Sages taught in a baraita: With regard to the fourth cup, one completes hallel over it and recites the great hallel; this is the statement of Rabbi Tarfon. And some say that one recites: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalms 23:1), in appreciation of the food he ate at the meal.
"God restores my soul" This means that Israel said, God restores my soul with Torah, as it says, "The Torah of Adonai is perfect, restoring the soul" (Psalms 19:18). "God leads me in the paths of mercy"--this means, to manna, to quail, to waters of the well, to clouds of glory; and these are given to me not because I have earned them but "for the sake of God's name." Even as I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, though I walk on the parched land of the wilderness, "I will fear no evil for You are with me," as it says, "Adonai went before them by day in a pillar of cloud (Exodus 13:21). Your rod and your staff, they comfort me: the rod is Your chastisements; the staff, Your Torah.
Rectification of scent and fear [of God]—namely, sustenance for the soul—which are rectified through all the concepts mentioned previously, are conceptually related to the lungs. This is because the letters that spell ReI’AH (lung) are the final letters of YHVH ro’I lO echsoR (“God is my shepherd, I do not lack”) (Psalms 23:1). “God is my shepherd, I do not lack” alludes to sustenance for the soul. This is the meaning of “I do not lack”—the concept of “for those who fear Him lack nothing” (Psalms 34:10), i.e., fear of God/scent, which is sustenance for the soul.
Rav Yitzḥak said: What is the meaning of that which is written: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalms 23:4)? This is a person who sleeps in the shadow of a single palm tree, and in the shadow of the moon. Despite his dangerous position, he trusts God and is not afraid. The Gemara qualifies the previous statement: And with regard to one who sleeps in the shadow of a single palm tree, we said he is in danger only if the shadow of another palm tree does not fall upon him. However, if the shadow of another palm tree falls upon him, we have no problem with it.
