Change We should Believe In

(כא) וְסָמַ֨ךְ אַהֲרֹ֜ן אֶת־שְׁתֵּ֣י ידו [יָדָ֗יו] עַ֨ל רֹ֣אשׁ הַשָּׂעִיר֮ הַחַי֒ וְהִתְוַדָּ֣ה עָלָ֗יו אֶת־כָּל־עֲוֺנֹת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֶת־כָּל־פִּשְׁעֵיהֶ֖ם לְכָל־חַטֹּאתָ֑ם וְנָתַ֤ן אֹתָם֙ עַל־רֹ֣אשׁ הַשָּׂעִ֔יר וְשִׁלַּ֛ח בְּיַד־אִ֥ישׁ עִתִּ֖י הַמִּדְבָּֽרָה׃ (כב) וְנָשָׂ֨א הַשָּׂעִ֥יר עָלָ֛יו אֶת־כָּל־עֲוֺנֹתָ֖ם אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ גְּזֵרָ֑ה וְשִׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־הַשָּׂעִ֖יר בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (כג) וּבָ֤א אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וּפָשַׁט֙ אֶת־בִּגְדֵ֣י הַבָּ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָבַ֖שׁ בְּבֹא֣וֹ אֶל־הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וְהִנִּיחָ֖ם שָֽׁם׃

(21) And Aharon shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the inequities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness.

(22) And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land which is cut off; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness. (23) And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall take off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and he shall leave them there.

והניחם שם. מלמד שטעונין גניזה, ולא ישתמש באותן ארבעה בגדים ליום כפורים אחר:

והניחם שם AND HE SHALL LEAVE THEM THERE — This teaches us that they (the linen garments) must be laid by and that he must not officiate in those four garments again on any subsequent Day of Atonement (Sifra; Yoma 12b).

This is strange. The priestly garments that were worn all year could be used for many years, till they withered. Yet the Yom Kippur garments which he wore only once year could never be used again?

Why squander a set of clothing used only once? Why not use them again on the following Yom Kippur? In truth, this law captures the essence of Yom Kippur: the capacity for real change and renewal. We often become addicted to our comfort zones and limitations. We get stuck in cycles of resentment, grudges, hate, misery, insecurity, envy, bad habits, addictions, fear, guilt, shame and the belief that we are worthless. We enter into a box, one that restricts our flow and our authenticity.

The vital message articulated in the institution of Yom Kippur is that I can start anew. The soul, just like its source, is capable of liberation(being free) and transformation. I have the power to create myself in the image I choose—according to my deepest and most authentic values. Yom Kippur I can become a new person. The “clothes” I wore last Yom Kippur will not be brought into the equation. I do not come into the process with any “old stuff,” not even old uniforms.

A Truly Revolutionary Encounter

שוב מעשה בנכרי אחד שבא לפני שמאי א"ל גיירני ע"מ שתלמדני כל התורה כולה כשאני עומד על רגל אחת דחפו באמת הבנין שבידו בא לפני הלל גייריה אמר לו דעלך סני לחברך לא תעביד זו היא כל התורה כולה ואידך פירושה הוא זיל גמור.

Another time a non-Jew came before Shammai and said, "I will convert if you can teach me the entire Torah while I stand on one foot." Shammai pushed the non-Jews aside with the ruler that was in his hand. The non-Jew came before Hillel and Hillel converted him saying, "What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor, that is the entire Torah, the rest is just commentary, now go and study."

Question:

Why did Shammai Chase the convert away with a stick couldn't he just politely decline? especially in light of:

(טו) שַׁמַּאי אוֹמֵר, עֲשֵׂה תוֹרָתְךָ קְבַע. אֱמֹר מְעַט וַעֲשֵׂה הַרְבֵּה, וֶהֱוֵי מְקַבֵּל אֶת כָּל הָאָדָם בְּסֵבֶר פָּנִים יָפוֹת:

(15) Shammai says, "Make your Torah fixed, say little and do much, and receive every person with a pleasant countenance."

The ger was asking for a "one footed" Judaisim

And Shammai showed him that in truth True transformation happens when you allow for downs and up.
