(א) שִׁ֗יר הַֽמַּ֫עֲל֥וֹת אֶל־יְ֭הוָה בַּצָּרָ֣תָה לִּ֑י קָ֝רָ֗אתִי וַֽיַּעֲנֵֽנִי׃
(1) A Song of Ascension.
In my pain I called out to the Eternal and the Eternal answered me.
(א) שיר המעלות. שיאמרו הלוים אותו על חמש עשרה מעלות היורדות מעזרת ישראל עד עזרת נשים ויש כאן ט"ו מזמורים של שיר המעלות
ורבותינו אמרו שיסדן דוד להעלות את התהום כמו שמפורש במסכת סוכה,
ולפי אגדה פתרונו שיר למאה עולות:
(1) A song of ascension - which the Levites recite on the fifteen steps that go down from the Israelites’ courtyard to the Women’s courtyard. For there are fifteen psalms that begin “A Song of Ascension.” (Suc. 5:4, Mid 2:5).
And our Rabbis said that David composed them to raise the deep, as is explained in Tractate Succah (53a).
And according to the Aggadah (Jerusalem Talmud Sanh. 10:2, 52b), it is to be interpreted: A song for a hundred steps (שיר למאה עולות).
(א) שִׁ֗יר לַֽמַּ֫עֲל֥וֹת אֶשָּׂ֣א עֵ֭ינַי אֶל־הֶהָרִ֑ים מֵ֝אַ֗יִן יָבֹ֥א עֶזְרִֽי׃
(ב) עֶ֭זְרִי מֵעִ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃
(ג) אַל־יִתֵּ֣ן לַמּ֣וֹט רַגְלֶ֑ךָ אַל־יָ֝נ֗וּם שֹֽׁמְרֶֽךָ׃
(ד) הִנֵּ֣ה לֹֽא־יָ֭נוּם וְלֹ֣א יִישָׁ֑ן שׁ֝וֹמֵ֗ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
(ה) יְהוָ֥ה שֹׁמְרֶ֑ךָ יְהוָ֥ה צִ֝לְּךָ֗ עַל־יַ֥ד יְמִינֶֽךָ׃
(ו) יוֹמָ֗ם הַשֶּׁ֥מֶשׁ לֹֽא־יַכֶּ֗כָּה וְיָרֵ֥חַ בַּלָּֽיְלָה׃
(ז) יְֽהוָ֗ה יִשְׁמָרְךָ֥ מִכָּל־רָ֑ע יִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר אֶת־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃
(ח) יְֽהוָ֗ה יִשְׁמָר־צֵאתְךָ֥ וּבוֹאֶ֑ךָ מֵֽ֝עַתָּ֗ה וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם׃
(1) A Song to Ascension. I lift my eyes to the mountains;
from where will my help come?
(2) My help comes from the Eternal,
Maker of heaven and earth.
(3) Who will not let your foot give way; your guardian will not slumber;
(4) Behold, the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps!
(5) The Eternal is your guardian,
the Eternal is your cover at your right hand.
(6) By day the sun will not strike you,
nor the moon by night.
(7) The Eternal will guard you from all harm, will guard your life.
(8) The Eternal will guard your going and coming, now and forever.
(א) שִׁ֗יר הַֽמַּ֫עֲל֥וֹת אֵ֭לֶיךָ נָשָׂ֣אתִי אֶת־עֵינַ֑י הַ֝יֹּשְׁבִ֗י בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
(ב) הִנֵּ֨ה כְעֵינֵ֪י עֲבָדִ֡ים אֶל־יַ֤ד אֲֽדוֹנֵיהֶ֗ם כְּעֵינֵ֣י שִׁפְחָה֮ אֶל־יַ֪ד גְּבִ֫רְתָּ֥הּ כֵּ֣ן עֵ֭ינֵינוּ אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ עַ֝֗ד שֶׁיְּחָנֵּֽנוּ׃
(ג) חָנֵּ֣נוּ יְהוָ֣ה חָנֵּ֑נוּ כִּֽי־רַ֝֗ב שָׂבַ֥עְנוּ בֽוּז׃
(ד) רַבַּת֮ שָֽׂבְעָה־לָּ֪הּ נַ֫פְשֵׁ֥נוּ הַלַּ֥עַג הַשַּׁאֲנַנִּ֑ים הַ֝בּ֗וּז לִגְאֵ֥יוֹנִֽים׃
(1) A song of Ascension. To You, I lift eyes, to the One who sits in the heavens.
(2) As the eyes of slaves follow their master’s hand, as the eyes of a slave-girl follow the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are toward the Eternal our God, waiting for God to grace us.
(3) Grace us, Eternal One, Grace us!
For we are so full of disgrace.
(4) Long enough have we endured the mockery of the self-satisfied,
the disgrace of the haughty.
(א) שִׁ֥יר הַֽמַּעֲל֗וֹת לְדָ֫וִ֥ד לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה שֶׁהָ֣יָה לָ֑נוּ יֹֽאמַר־נָ֝א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
(ב) לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הוָה שֶׁהָ֣יָה לָ֑נוּ בְּק֖וּם עָלֵ֣ינוּ אָדָֽם׃
(ג) אֲ֭זַי חַיִּ֣ים בְּלָע֑וּנוּ בַּחֲר֖וֹת אַפָּ֣ם בָּֽנוּ׃
(ד) אֲ֭זַי הַמַּ֣יִם שְׁטָפ֑וּנוּ נַ֗֜חְלָה עָבַ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֵֽׁנוּ׃
(ה) אֲ֭זַי עָבַ֣ר עַל־נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ הַ֝מַּ֗יִם הַזֵּֽידוֹנִֽים׃
(ו) בָּר֥וּךְ יְהוָ֑ה שֶׁלֹּ֥א נְתָנָ֥נוּ טֶ֝֗רֶף לְשִׁנֵּיהֶֽם׃
(ז) נַפְשֵׁ֗נוּ כְּצִפּ֥וֹר נִמְלְטָה֮ מִפַּ֪ח י֫וֹקְשִׁ֥ים הַפַּ֥ח נִשְׁבָּ֗ר וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ נִמְלָֽטְנוּ׃
(ח) עֶ֭זְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃
(1) A Song of Ascension. For David. Had we not had the Eternal, let Israel now declare,
(2) Had we not had the Eternal, when men rose against us,
(3) they would have swallowed us alive
as their rage burned against us;
(4) the waters would have carried us off, the torrent would have swept over us;
(5) then the the seething waters would have swept over us.
(6) Blessed is the Eternal,
who did not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.
(7) We are like a bird escaped from the fowler’s trap;
the trap broke and we escaped.
(8) Our help is the name of the Eternal, maker of heaven and earth.
(א) שִׁ֗יר הַֽמַּ֫עֲל֥וֹת בְּשׁ֣וּב יְ֭הוָה אֶת־שִׁיבַ֣ת צִיּ֑וֹן הָ֝יִ֗ינוּ כְּחֹלְמִֽים׃
(ב) אָ֤ז יִמָּלֵ֪א שְׂח֡וֹק פִּינוּ֮ וּלְשׁוֹנֵ֪נוּ רִ֫נָּ֥ה אָ֭ז יֹאמְר֣וּ בַגּוֹיִ֑ם הִגְדִּ֥יל יְ֝הוָ֗ה לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת עִם־אֵֽלֶּה׃
(ג) הִגְדִּ֣יל יְ֭הוָה לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת עִמָּ֗נוּ הָיִ֥ינוּ שְׂמֵחִֽים׃
(ד) שׁוּבָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה אֶת־שבותנו [שְׁבִיתֵ֑נוּ] כַּאֲפִיקִ֥ים בַּנֶּֽגֶב׃
(ה) הַזֹּרְעִ֥ים בְּדִמְעָ֗ה בְּרִנָּ֥ה יִקְצֹֽרוּ׃
(ו) הָ֘ל֤וֹךְ יֵלֵ֨ךְ ׀ וּבָכֹה֮ נֹשֵׂ֪א מֶֽשֶׁךְ־הַ֫זָּ֥רַע בֹּֽ֬א־יָב֥וֹא בְרִנָּ֑ה נֹ֝שֵׂ֗א אֲלֻמֹּתָֽיו׃
(1) A Song of Ascension. When the Eternal returns the captives of Zion — it will be like we are dreaming.
(2) Then our mouths shall be filled with laughter, our tongues, with songs of joy. Then shall they say among the nations, “The Eternal has done great things for them!”
(3) The Eternal will do great things for us and we shall rejoice.
(4) Return our captives, Eternal One,
like rivulets in the Negev.
(5) They who sow in tears shall reap with joy.
(6) Though he goes along weeping, carrying the seed-bag, he shall come back with songs of joy, carrying his sheaves.
(א) שִׁ֥יר הַֽמַּעֲל֑וֹת מִמַּעֲמַקִּ֖ים קְרָאתִ֣יךָ יְהוָֽה׃
(ב) אֲדֹנָי֮ שִׁמְעָ֪ה בְק֫וֹלִ֥י תִּהְיֶ֣ינָה אָ֭זְנֶיךָ קַשֻּׁב֑וֹת לְ֝ק֗וֹל תַּחֲנוּנָֽי׃
(ג) אִם־עֲוֺנ֥וֹת תִּשְׁמָר־יָ֑הּ אֲ֝דֹנָ֗י מִ֣י יַעֲמֹֽד׃
(ד) כִּֽי־עִמְּךָ֥ הַסְּלִיחָ֑ה לְ֝מַ֗עַן תִּוָּרֵֽא׃
(ה) קִוִּ֣יתִי יְ֭הוָה קִוְּתָ֣ה נַפְשִׁ֑י וְֽלִדְבָר֥וֹ הוֹחָֽלְתִּי׃
(ו) נַפְשִׁ֥י לַֽאדֹנָ֑י מִשֹּׁמְרִ֥ים לַ֝בֹּ֗קֶר שֹׁמְרִ֥ים לַבֹּֽקֶר׃
(ז) יַחֵ֥ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶל־יְה֫וָה כִּֽי־עִם־יְהוָ֥ה הַחֶ֑סֶד וְהַרְבֵּ֖ה עִמּ֣וֹ פְדֽוּת׃
(ח) וְ֭הוּא יִפְדֶּ֣ה אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִ֝כֹּ֗ל עֲוֺנֹתָֽיו׃
(1) A Song of Ascension. From the depths I call to You, Eternal One.
(2) O Lord, listen to my cry; let Your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy.
(3) If You keep account of sins, Lord, who will survive?
(4) Yours is the power to forgive so that You may be held in awe.
(5) I hope for the Eternal; my soul hopes; I await the word of the Eternal.
(6) I am more eager for my Lord than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
(7) O Israel, wait for the Eternal; for with the Eternal is loving-kindness and great power to redeem.
(8) The One who will redeem Israel from all their sins.
(א) שִׁ֥יר הַֽמַּֽעֲל֗וֹת לְדָ֫וִ֥ד יְהוָ֤ה ׀ לֹא־גָבַ֣הּ לִ֭בִּי וְלֹא־רָמ֣וּ עֵינַ֑י וְלֹֽא־הִלַּ֓כְתִּי ׀ בִּגְדֹל֖וֹת וּבְנִפְלָא֣וֹת מִמֶּֽנִּי׃
(ב) אִם־לֹ֤א שִׁוִּ֨יתִי ׀ וְדוֹמַ֗מְתִּי נַ֫פְשִׁ֥י כְּ֭גָמֻל עֲלֵ֣י אִמּ֑וֹ כַּגָּמֻ֖ל עָלַ֣י נַפְשִֽׁי׃
(ג) יַחֵ֣ל יִ֭שְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה מֵֽ֝עַתָּ֗ה וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם׃
(1) A Song of Ascension. For David. Eternal One, my heart is not proud nor are my eyes raised; I do not aspire to great things or to wonders beyond me;
(2) For I have taught myself to be content, to quiet my soul, like a weaned child upon its mother; like a weaned child am I in my soul.
(3) O Israel, wait for the Eternal, now and forever.
אֲמַר לֵיהּ רַב חִסְדָּא לְהָהוּא מִדְּרַבָּנַן דַּהֲוָה קָמְסַדַּר אַגָּדָתָא קַמֵּיהּ אֲמַר לֵיהּ שְׁמִיעַ לְךָ הָנֵי חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה מַעֲלוֹת כְּנֶגֶד מִי אֲמָרָם דָּוִד
אֲמַר לֵיהּ הָכִי אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁכָּרָה דָּוִד שִׁיתִין קְפָא תְּהוֹמָא וּבָעֵי לְמִשְׁטְפֵיהּ לְעָלְמָא אָמַר דָּוִד חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה מַעֲלוֹת וְהוֹרִידָן
אִי הָכִי חֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה מַעֲלוֹת יוֹרְדוֹת מִיבְּעֵי לֵיהּ
Rav Ḥisda said to one of the Sages who was editing aggada before him: Did you ever hear why David said these fifteen Songs of Ascension?
He said to him that this is what Rabbi Yoḥanan said: At the time that David dug the drainpipes in the foundation of the Temple, the waters of the depths rose and sought to flood the world. Immediately, David recited the fifteen Songs of the Ascents and caused them to subside.
Rav Ḥisda asked: If so, should they be called fifteen Songs of Ascension? They should have been called Songs of Descent.
