Blessed are You, Hashem, our God, King
of the universe, who with His word brings on
evenings, and with wisdom opens gates
לָדַעַת חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר לְהָבִין אִמְרֵי בִינָה.
To know wisdom and instruction; To comprehend the words of understanding;
יִרְאַת יְהוָה רֵאשִׁית דָּעַת חָכְמָה וּמוּסָר אֱוִילִים בָּזוּ.
The fear of Hashem is the beginning of knowledge; But the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.
חָכְמוֹת בַּחוּץ תָּרֹנָּה בָּרְחֹבוֹת תִּתֵּן קוֹלָהּ.
Wisdom cries aloud in the streets, She raises her voice in the squares
יַעַן קָרָאתִי וַתְּמָאֵנוּ נָטִיתִי יָדִי וְאֵין מַקְשִׁיב. וַתִּפְרְעוּ כָל עֲצָתִי וְתוֹכַחְתִּי לֹא אֲבִיתֶם. גַּם אֲנִי בְּאֵידְכֶם אֶשְׂחָק אֶלְעַג בְּבֹא פַחְדְּכֶם. בְּבֹא כשאוה [כְשׁוֹאָה] פַּחְדְּכֶם וְאֵידְכֶם כְּסוּפָה יֶאֱתֶה בְּבֹא עֲלֵיכֶם צָרָה וְצוּקָה. אָז יִקְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹא אֶעֱנֶה יְשַׁחֲרֻנְנִי וְלֹא יִמְצָאֻנְנִי. תַּחַת כִּי שָׂנְאוּ דָעַת וְיִרְאַת יְהֹוָה לֹא בָחָרוּ.
Because I have called, and you refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man paid heed, But you have neglected my counsel And would none of my reproof; I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread comes... as a storm... as a whirlwind; When trouble and distress come upon you. Then will they call me, but I will not answer, They will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me. For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of the Hashem
לְהַקְשִׁיב לַחָכְמָה אָזְנֶךָ תַּטֶּה לִבְּךָ לַתְּבוּנָה. כִּי אִם לַבִּינָה תִקְרָא לַתְּבוּנָה תִּתֵּן קוֹלֶךָ. אִם תְּבַקְשֶׁנָּה כַכָּסֶף וְכַמַּטְמוֹנִים תַּחְפְּשֶׂנָּה. אָז תָּבִין יִרְאַת יְהוָה וְדַעַת אֱלֹהִים תִּמְצָא.
Make your ear attend to wisdom, incline your heart to discernment; If you call out for understanding, And lift up your voice for discernment; If you seek her like silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of Hashem, And find the knowledge of God.
כִּי תָבוֹא חָכְמָה בְלִבֶּךָ וְדַעַת לְנַפְשְׁךָ יִנְעָם.
For wisdom shall come into your heart, And knowledge shall be pleasant to your soul;
דְּרָכֶיהָ דַרְכֵי נֹעַם וְכָל נְתִיבוֹתֶיהָ שָׁלוֹם. עֵץ חַיִּים הִיא לַמַּחֲזִיקִים בָּהּ וְתֹמְכֶיהָ מְאֻשָּׁר.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who hold fast to her, And those who uphold it are happy.
