For this limmud, we are going to revisit a moment towards the very middle of the last chapter of Megillath Ruth.

Boaz had recently become next-in-line to redeem the entirety of the estate of his kinsman, Elimelekh, which would necessitate Boaz's taking Ruth the Moabite as his wife, as well as providing for Naomi, the deceased Elimelekh's widow.

Boaz had already made his intentions to Ruth clear; He is willing and able to step into this role.

We pick up with Boaz gathering witnesses to formally publicize these intentions, and to immediately act upon them:

(ט) וַיֹּאמֶר֩ בֹּ֨עַז לַזְּקֵנִ֜ים וְכָל־הָעָ֗ם עֵדִ֤ים אַתֶּם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם כִּ֤י קָנִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֶֽאֱלִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְכִלְי֖וֹן וּמַחְל֑וֹן מִיַּ֖ד נָעֳמִֽי׃ (י) וְגַ֣ם אֶת־ר֣וּת הַמֹּאֲבִיָּה֩ אֵ֨שֶׁת מַחְל֜וֹן קָנִ֧יתִי לִ֣י לְאִשָּׁ֗ה לְהָקִ֤ים שֵׁם־הַמֵּת֙ עַל־נַ֣חֲלָת֔וֹ וְלֹא־יִכָּרֵ֧ת שֵׁם־הַמֵּ֛ת מֵעִ֥ם אֶחָ֖יו וּמִשַּׁ֣עַר מְקוֹמ֑וֹ עֵדִ֥ים אַתֶּ֖ם הַיּֽוֹם׃ (יא) וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ כָּל־הָעָ֧ם אֲשֶׁר־בַּשַּׁ֛עַר וְהַזְּקֵנִ֖ים עֵדִ֑ים יִתֵּן֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֶֽת־הָאִשָּׁ֜ה הַבָּאָ֣ה אֶל־בֵּיתֶ֗ךָ כְּרָחֵ֤ל ׀ וּכְלֵאָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנ֤וּ שְׁתֵּיהֶם֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַעֲשֵׂה־חַ֣יִל בְּאֶפְרָ֔תָה וּקְרָא־שֵׁ֖ם בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ (יב) וִיהִ֤י בֵֽיתְךָ֙ כְּבֵ֣ית פֶּ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָ֥ה תָמָ֖ר לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה מִן־הַזֶּ֗רַע אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ לְךָ֔ מִן־הַֽנַּעֲרָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃ (יג) וַיִּקַּ֨ח בֹּ֤עַז אֶת־רוּת֙ וַתְּהִי־ל֣וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֖א אֵלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לָ֛הּ הֵרָי֖וֹן וַתֵּ֥לֶד בֵּֽן׃

(9) And Boaz said to the elders and to the rest of the people:

“You are witnesses today that I am acquiring all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi! (10) And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Chilion I am acquiring for me as a wife, in order to build up the name of the deceased upon his estate, so that the name of the deceased would not be cut off from his brothers or from the gate of his hometown. You are witnesses today!

(11) And all of the people at the gate and the elders answered:

We are! May YHWH make the woman who is entering your home like Rachel and like Leah, the two of whom built up the house of Israel and acted valiantly in Ephratha, and perpetuate your name in Bethlehem!

(12) And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah— through the seed that YHWH shall give to you from this young woman!

(13) And Boaz took Ruth, and she became his woman. And he had relations with her, and YHWH had her conceive, and she bore a son.

Our very last midrash of this series will juxtapose the people's response in verse 11 above, with another statement attributed to Moses in Deuteronomy 28. So before reading the midrash, let's take a look at that verse:

(ח) יְצַ֨ו יְהוָ֤ה אִתְּךָ֙ אֶת־הַבְּרָכָ֔ה בַּאֲסָמֶ֕יךָ וּבְכֹ֖ל מִשְׁלַ֣ח יָדֶ֑ךָ וּבֵ֣רַכְךָ֔ בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃

(8) YHWH will ordain blessings for you upon your barns and upon all your undertakings: He will bless you in the land that YHWH your god is giving you.

Many of the midrashim which we've encountered seemed to be responding to some kind of a difficulty in the text, or a difficulty found elsewhere in TaNaKhic literature. I'm not so sure that that is what is going on here.

As you read through, consider - What do you think this midrash is responding to?

ועשה חיל באפרתה וקרא שם בבית לחם. מלמד שהברכה צריכה להיות כפולה כענין שנ' (דברים כ"ח ח') יצו יי' אתך את הברכה באסמיך [ובכל משלח ידך] ואחר כן אומר וברכך בארץ וכן כיוצא בהן.

... the two of whom acted valiantly in Ephrata, and perpetuate your name in Bethlehem!

This teaches that the blessing needed to be doubled, in accordance with Deuteronomy 28:8:

May YHWH ordain blessings for you - upon your barns and all of your undertakings!

And afterwards, it says:

And may he bless you in the land.

And there are other examples.

Any thoughts? What's really going on in this midrash?

(You probably already had some great ideas.

But if nothing came to mind; What might one do in order to start investigating further? (Hint: Think back to our Making of a Midrash Interlude. Where did we start looking, in order to understand more deeply what a midrash might be saying, or responding to?))

Take a look at the bigger context of Deuteronomy 28, to see if the surrounding verses shed any light on our question as to what's really going on in this midrash.

The context, like everything in Deuteronomy, is Moses very last grand charge to the Israelites before wishing them well and parting ways; Moses to his death at the ripe old age of 120, and the Israelites to be led by Joshua into the promised land.

I included the first 14 verses of the chapter - which is a lot to read! - but all of which are important for our purposes here.

(1) Now, if you obey YHWH your god, to observe faithfully all His commandments which I enjoin upon you this day, YHWH your god will set you high above all the nations of the earth. (2) All these blessings shall come upon you and take effect, if you will but heed the word of YHWH your god:

(3) Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the country. (4) Blessed shall be the issue of your womb, the produce of your soil, and the offspring of your cattle, the calving of your herd and the lambing of your flock.

(5) Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

(6) Blessed shall you be in your comings and blessed shall you be in your goings.

(8) YHWH will ordain blessings for you upon your barns and upon all your undertakings: He will bless you in the land that YHWH your god is giving you.

(9) YHWH will establish you as his holy people, as he swore to you, if you keep the commandments of YHWH your god and walk in his ways.

(10) And all the peoples of the earth shall see that YHWH's name is proclaimed over you, and they shall stand in fear of you.

(11) YHWH will give you abounding prosperity in the issue of your womb, the offspring of your cattle, and the produce of your soil in the land that YHWH swore to your fathers to assign to you.

(12) YHWH will open for you his bounteous store, the heavens, to provide rain for your land in season and to bless all your undertakings. You will be creditor to many nations, but debtor to none.

(13) YHWH will make you the head, not the tail; you will always be at the top and never at the bottom—if only you obey and faithfully observe the commandments of YHWH your god that I enjoin upon you this day, (14) and do not deviate to the right or to the left from any of the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day and turn to the worship of other gods.

Phew!

You probably noticed that some words and phrases above are highlighted. Do another skim through those highlighted parts. What do you start to notice?

Here's a question which should bring to the fore where I'm going with this: Think back on everything we've read from, and about the Megillah of Ruth. Remember that this is a story about blessings, about redemption, about land, about produce, about offspring, about loyalty; As I read through Moses's words above, I see overlap everywhere!

This is true even without taking the various midrashim that we've seen into account. But then with the help of midrash, this point is sharpened even more.

For example; Think back to when we were learning about the very first exchange between Ruth and Boaz in chapter 2. As far as we know from the story as we have it, this is the first statement ever said between the two of them:

(ח) וַיֹּאמֶר֩ בֹּ֨עַז אֶל־ר֜וּת הֲל֧וֹא שָׁמַ֣עַתְּ בִּתִּ֗י אַל־תֵּלְכִי֙ לִלְקֹט֙ בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה אַחֵ֔ר וְגַ֛ם לֹ֥א תַעֲבוּרִ֖י מִזֶּ֑ה וְכֹ֥ה תִדְבָּקִ֖ין עִם־נַעֲרֹתָֽי׃

(8) Boaz said to Ruth,

“Listen to me, daughter. Don’t go to glean in another field. Don’t go elsewhere, but cling onto my girls."

Seems simple enough. Boaz is going out of his way to do all that he can to make Ruth feel welcome to glean as much as she ever needs from his property.

But how did the midrash read it? Do you remember?

Here is the midrash again, to jog your memory:

ויאמר בעז אל רות הלא שמעת בתי אל תלכי ללקט בשדה אחר. על שם (שמות כ' ג') לא יהיה לך אלהים אחרים, וגם לא תעבורי מזה כמו שנ' (שם ט' ב') זה אלי ואנוהו, וכה תדבקין על שם (דברים ד' ד') ואתם הדבקים ביי' אלהיכם חיים, עם נערתי עם ישראל שנ' (הושע י"א א') כי נער ישראל ואהבהו.

Boaz is really saying, Do not have any other gods (Exodus 20:3).

And when he says Do not depart from here (zeh), he is saying This (zeh!) is my god, and I shall beautify him! (Exodus 15:2).

And when he says Cling onto my girls, he is really saying And you all who cling to YHWH your god, are all truly alive! (Deut. 4:4).

And when he says, to my girls (naaroth), what is really saying is cling to Israel, in accordance with what is said in the book of Hosea, When Israel was young (na'ar), I fell in love with him (Hosea 11:1).

(We saw other midrashim which picked up on this very theme. Remember Naomi's instructions to Ruth before Ruth would spend her first night with Boaz? While the pshat was that Naomi was telling Ruth to wash and to beautify herself with kinds of make-up, the midrash read this as instructions to wash herself from the dirtiness of the idolatry of Moab, and to beautify herself by taking on the commandments of YHWH.)

When we read Megillath Ruth through this Rabbinic lens and we then read it in light of Deuteronomy 28, we are shown a case-study of what happens when a particular family of Judeans does exactly that which is required of them, fulfilling completely the injunction of 28:1 above, obeying YHWH and observing his commands.

What follows is that all of Moses's blessings will naturally be realized. We read about those who are loyal to each other, to the ways of YHWH, earnestly trying to do the right thing every step of the way; and what started with emptiness and tears (remember Naomi even became Mara) was replaced with the joy of complete redemption and abundant blessings.

Look up at Deuteronomy 28 once more. How many times does Moses repeat the word "bless," or "blessing?" Quite a bit, right? You'd think we would get the message after the fourth, or even the third time!

After you've double-checked your count, here's a question:

Does this number have significance in Megillath Ruth at all? (Hint - I probably would not ask if the answer were "no.")

Here is the very last paragraph of the megillah:

(יח) וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְד֣וֹת פָּ֔רֶץ פֶּ֖רֶץ הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־חֶצְרֽוֹן׃ (יט) וְחֶצְרוֹן֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־רָ֔ם וְרָ֖ם הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עַמִּֽינָדָֽב׃ (כ) וְעַמִּֽינָדָב֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־נַחְשׁ֔וֹן וְנַחְשׁ֖וֹן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־שַׂלְמָֽה׃ (כא) וְשַׂלְמוֹן֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־בֹּ֔עַז וּבֹ֖עַז הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־עוֹבֵֽד׃ (כב) וְעֹבֵד֙ הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־יִשָׁ֔י וְיִשַׁ֖י הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־דָּוִֽד׃

This is the line of Perez:

  • Perez begot Hezron;
  • and Hezron begot Ram;
  • and Ram begot Ammi-nadab;
  • and Amminadab begot Nahshon;
  • and Nahshon begot Salmon;
  • and Salmon begot Boaz;
  • and Boaz begot Obed;
  • and Obed begot Jesse;
  • and Jesse begot David.

You'll notice that it takes ten generations to get from Perez, Judah's son, to David, the first king of Judah, and the founder of the dynasty from which prophets such as Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zacharia would say our future redeemer, the Tzemach David, is bound to be from.

I love the idea that each successive generation that took the ancient Judeans ever closer to their most celebrated king corresponded to each blessing promised by Moses, each of which Naomi, Boaz, and Ruth ultimately experienced by merit of their wholly righteous and admirable acts. By the time we reach the end of the Megillah, we see that YHWH was watching from the very beginning, and no good deed went unrewarded.

May we follow in their footsteps, demonstrating the same unceasing love and loyalty, and may YHWH-Almighty shower us with only the greatest of blessings, as our ancestors taught us he did in the days of such heroes as Boaz, Ruth and Naomi long ago.
