Star Wars & Judaism IX: Rogue One

Trusting in a Higher Power

LYRA ERSO: Jyn. You know where to go, don’t you? Trust the Force.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not rely on your own understanding.

Extremist Rebels

JYN ERSO: You’re all rebels, aren’t you?

SENATOR MON MOTHMA: Yes, but Saw Gerrera’s an extremist. He’s been fighting on his own since he broke with the Rebellion. His militancy has caused the Alliance a great many problems. We have no choice now but to try to mend that broken trust.

There were certain zealots among the people of Jerusalem. The Sages said to them: Let us go out and make peace with the Romans. But the zealots did not allow them to do this. The zealots said to the Sages: Let us go out and engage in battle against the Romans. But the Sages said to them: You will not be successful. They arose and burned down these storehouses [ambarei] of wheat and barley, and there was a general famine.

Trust

CASSIAN ANDOR: That’s not the point. Where did you get it?

JYN ERSO: I found it.

K-2SO: I find that answer vague and unconvincing.

JYN ERSO: Trust goes both ways.

???

Lies & Distrust

SAW GERRERA: Lies! Deceptions! Let’s see it. Bodhi Rook. Cargo pilot. Local boy, huh?

BODHI ROOK: Uh-huh.

EDRIO TWO TUBES: This was found in his boot when he was captured.

BODHI ROOK: Okay, I can hear you. He didn’t capture me, I came here myself. I defected, I defected.

SAW GERRERA: Every day, more lies.

BODHI ROOK: Lies? Would I risk everything for a lie? No, we don’t have time for this! I have to speak to Saw Gerrera before it’s too late.

(1) Oh, to be in the desert, At an encampment for wayfarers! Oh, to leave my people, To go away from them— For they are all adulterers, A band of rogues. (2) They bend their tongues like bows; They are valorous in the land For treachery, not for honesty; They advance from evil to evil. And they do not heed Me —declares the LORD. (3) Beware, every man of his friend! Trust not even a brother! For every brother takes advantage, Every friend is base in his dealings. (4) One man cheats the other, They will not speak truth; They have trained their tongues to speak falsely; They wear themselves out working iniquity. (5) You dwell in the midst of deceit. In their deceit, they refuse to heed Me —declares the LORD.

Hope

JYN ERSO: Hope?

CASSIAN ANDOR: Yeah. Rebellions are built on hope.

one example: Korah rebellion

???

CHIRRUT ÎMWE: May the Force of others be with you. May the Force of others be with you.

not sure...

Protectors of Temple

JYN ERSO: Who are they?

CASSIAN ANDOR: The Guardians of the Whills. Protectors of the Kyber Temple. But there’s nothing left to protect, so now they’re just causing trouble for everybody.

(38) Those who were to camp before the Tabernacle, in front—before the Tent of Meeting, on the east—were Moses and Aaron and his sons, attending to the duties of the sanctuary, as a duty on behalf of the Israelites; and any outsider who encroached was to be put to death.

And the Levites in twenty-one places: Five at the five gates of the Temple Mount; Four at its four corners on the inside; Five at five of the gates of the courtyard; Four at its four corners on the outside; One at the offering chamber; One at the chamber of the curtain, And one behind the place of the kapporet.

(1) In three places the priests keep watch in the Temple: in the chamber of Avtinas, in the chamber of the spark, and in the fire chamber. In the chamber of Avtinas and in the chamber of the spark there were upper chambers where the youths kept watch. The fire chamber was vaulted and it was a large room surrounded with stone projections, and the elders of the clan [serving in the Temple] used to sleep there, with the keys of the Temple courtyard in their hands.

Trust in Higher Power and No Fear

Though I walk through a valley of deepest darkness, I fear no harm, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.

Blind

You shall not insult the deaf, or place a stumbling block before the blind. You shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

Prayer

CHIRRUT ÎMWE: I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me. I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.

BAZE MALBUS: You pray?

CHIRRUT ÎMWE: I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.

BAZE MALBUS: Really?

CHIRRUT ÎMWE: I’m one with the Force and the Force is with me.

BAZE MALBUS: He’s praying for the door to open.

CHIRRUT ÎMWE: It bothers him, because he knows it is possible. Baze Malbus was once the most devoted Guardian of us all.

CASSIAN ANDOR: I’m beginning to think the Force and I have different priorities.

Rabbi Elazar also said: "Since the day the Temple was destroyed, the gates of prayer were locked, as it is said, 'Though I plead and call out, He shuts out my prayer' (Lamentations 3:8); and even though the gates of prayer were locked, the gates of tears were not locked, as it is stated: 'Hear my prayer, Lord, and give ear to my pleading, keep not silence at my tears' (Psalms 39:13)."

Factions

SENATOR VASP VASPAR: We joined an Alliance, not a suicide pact!

BAIL ORGANA: We’ve only now managed to gather our forces.

SENATOR NOWER JEBEL: Gather our forces? General Draven’s already blown up an Imperial base!

GENERAL DAVITS DRAVEN: A decision needed to be made.

SENATOR TYNNRA PAMLO: If it’s war you want, you’ll fight alone!

SENATOR VASP VASPAR: If that’s the way it’s going, why have an Alliance at all?

When Rabbi Akivah saw Bar Kozeba, he said, “This is the King Messiah.”
Rabbi Yohanan, son of Toreta, said to him, “Akivah, grass will grow on your cheeks, and the Messiah will not yet have come!”

Rabbi Yohanan said, “There were 80,000 pairs of trumpeters that surrounded Betar. Each one was in charge of a number of troops. Ben Kozebah was there, and he had 200,000 troops...."

Stuff

CASSIAN ANDOR: They were never going to believe you.

JYN ERSO: I appreciate the support.

CASSIAN ANDOR: But I do. I believe you. We’d like to volunteer. Some of us... ... most of us, we’ve done terrible things on behalf of the Rebellion. We’re spies. Saboteurs. Assassins. Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion. And every time I walked away from something I wanted to forget, I told myself it was for a cause that I believed in. A cause that was worth it. Without that, we’re lost. Everything we’ve done would have been for nothing. I couldn’t face myself if I gave up now. None of us could. It won’t be comfortable.

(15) Rabbi Tarfon said: "The day is short, and the work is plentiful, and the laborers are indolent, and the reward is great, and the master of the house is insistent."

(16) He [Rabbi Tarfon] used to say: "It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it; If you have studied much Torah, you shall be given much reward. Faithful is your employer to pay you the reward of your labor; And know that the grant of reward unto the righteous is in the age to come."
