כַּבֵּ֥ד אֶת־אָבִ֖יךָ וְאֶת־אִמֶּ֑ךָ לְמַ֙עַן֙ יַאֲרִכ֣וּן יָמֶ֔יךָ עַ֚ל הָאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יי אֱלֹקֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃
Honor your father and your mother, that you may long endure on the land that the Eternal your God is assigning to you.
Make sacral vestments for your brother Aaron, for honor and adornment.
If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, From pursuing your affairs on My holy day; If you call the sabbath “delight,” The Eternal's holy day “honored”; And if you honor it and go not your ways Nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains—
הֵם אָמְרוּ שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים. רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר, יְהִי כְבוֹד חֲבֵרְךָ חָבִיב עָלֶיךָ כְּשֶׁלָּךְ, וְאַל תְּהִי נוֹחַ לִכְעֹס. וְשׁוּב יוֹם אֶחָד לִפְנֵי מִיתָתְךָ.
They [each] said three things: Rabbi Eliezer said: Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own; and be not easily provoked to anger; and repent one day before your death.
אֵיזֶהוּ מְכֻבָּד, הַמְכַבֵּד אֶת הַבְּרִיּוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמואל א ב) כִּי מְכַבְּדַי אֲכַבֵּד וּבֹזַי יֵקָלּוּ:
Who is honored? The one who honors others as it is said: “For I honor those that honor Me, but those who spurn Me shall be dishonored” (I Samuel 2:30).
Come and hear: Great is human honor, as it overrides a prohibition in the Torah.
But Moses said to the Eternal, “Please, O Eternal One, I have never been a man of words, either in times past or now that You have spoken to Your servant; I am heavy of speech and heavy of tongue.”
Then the Eternal said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. For I have weighed down his heart and the hearts of his courtiers, in order that I may display these My signs among them.
There was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was heavy on the land.
The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of the Eternal filled the Tabernacle.
אֵין עוֹמְדִין לְהִתְפַּלֵּל אֶלָּא מִתּוֹךְ כֹּבֶד רֹאשׁ. חֲסִידִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים הָיוּ שׁוֹהִים שָׁעָה אַחַת וּמִתְפַּלְּלִים, כְּדֵי שֶׁיְּכַוְּנוּ אֶת לִבָּם לַמָּקוֹם.
One should not stand up to say Tefillah except in a reverent state of mind. The pious men of old used to wait an hour before praying in order that they might direct their thoughts to God.
