(8) And of Levi he said: Let Your Thummim and Urim Be with Your faithful one, Whom You tested at Massah, Challenged at the waters of Meribah; (9) Who said of his father and mother, “I consider them not.” His brothers he disregarded, Ignored his own children. Your precepts alone they observed, And kept Your covenant. (10) They shall teach Your laws to Jacob And Your instructions to Israel. They shall offer You incense to savor And whole-offerings on Your altar. (11) Bless, O LORD, his substance, And favor his undertakings. Smite the loins of his foes; Let his enemies rise no more.

And this he said of Judah: Hear, HaShem the voice of Judah And restore him to his people. Though his own hands strive for him, Help him against his foes.

וזאת ליהודה וזאת הבקשה אני מבקש ומתפלל גם על ארץ יהודה אשר בתוכה נחלת שמעון מפוזרת שלא ימותו במלחמה כי יחדיו היו יוצאים למלחמה:

This is also what I request and pray for on behalf of the people residing in the tribal territory of Yehudah that includes the members of the tribe of Shimon who were an enclave within the tribal territory of Yehudah. Let them not die in the wars in which they will be involved. They all go out to war together.

(24) He turned away from them and wept. But he came back to them and spoke to them; and he took Shimon from among them and had him bound before their eyes.

SHIMON — he had cast him into the pit and it was he who had said to Levi “Behold, this dreamer coming” (Tanchuma Yashan 1:10:17). Another explanation is: It was Joseph’s intention to separate him from Levi lest the two of them might conspire to kill him.

(5) Simeon and Levi are brothers; Their weapons are tools of lawlessness. (6) Let not my person be included in their council, Let not my being be counted in their assembly. For when angry they slay men, And when pleased they maim oxen. (7) Cursed be their anger so fierce, And their wrath so relentless. I will divide them in Jacob, Scatter them in Israel.

As the one of them was opening his sack to give feed to his donkey at the night encampment, he saw his money right there at the mouth of his bag.

AND THE ONE OPENED HIS SACK — This was Levi who remained alone (one) being without Shimon his companion (cf Targum Jonathan).

(31) Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, "I will go up and tell the news to Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. (32) The men are shepherds; they have always been breeders of livestock, and they have brought with them their flocks and herds and all that is theirs.' (33) So when Pharaoh summons you and asks, 'What is your occupation?' (34) you shall answer, 'Your servants have been breeders of livestock from the start until now, both we and our fathers’—so that you may stay in the region of Goshen. For all shepherds are abhorrent to Egyptians."

"Therefore they did set over him taskmasters" (Exodus 1:11). It should have stated: "Over them", [in the plural]. The school of Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon, taught: At first they brought a brick mold and they hung it on the neck of Pharaoh [to create the appearance that he was also participating in the labor]. And to each and every Jew who said: "I am a delicate person [and I cannot participate in the labor]," they said to him: "Are you at all more of a delicate person than Pharaoh?!"

(10) The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (11) “Phinehas, son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the Israelites by displaying among them his passion for Me, so that I did not wipe out the Israelite people in My passion. (12) Say, therefore, ‘I grant him My pact of friendship. (13) It shall be for him and his descendants after him a pact of priesthood for all time, because he took impassioned action for his God, thus making expiation for the Israelites.’” (14) The name of the Israelite who was killed, the one who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, chieftain of a Simeonite ancestral house.

Rabbi Yoḥanan says: Zimri has five names: Zimri; and son of Salu; and Saul; and son of the Canaanite woman; and Shelumiel, son of Zuri Shaddai. He was called Zimri because of the fact that he became like an addled [hamuzeret] egg as a result of engaging in multiple acts of intercourse. He was called son of Salu because of the fact that he evoked [shehisli] the sins of his family. He was called Saul [Shaul] because of the fact that he lent [shehishil] himself to sinful matters. He was called son of the Canaanite woman because of the fact that he performed an act of Canaan, as the Canaanites are renowned for their licentiousness. And what is his given name? Shelumiel, son of Zuri Shaddai, is his name, the leader of the tribe of Simeon (Numbers 1:6).
