(11) But Naomi replied, “Turn back, my daughters! Why should you go with me? Have I any more sons in my body who might be husbands for you? (12) Turn back, my daughters, for I am too old to be married. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I were married tonight and I also bore sons, (13) should you wait for them to grow up? Should you on their account debar yourselves from marriage? Oh no, my daughters! My lot is far more bitter than yours, for the hand of the LORD has struck out against me.” (14) They broke into weeping again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law farewell. But Ruth clung to her. (15) So she said, “See, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods. Go follow your sister-in-law.” (16) But Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. (17) Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus and more may the LORD do to me if anything but death parts me from you.” (18) When [Naomi] saw how determined she was to go with her, she ceased to argue with her;
Rut's Loyalty and Devotion to Naomi
Ruth: From Alienation to Monarchy by Dr. Yael Ziegler
Ruth is a devuka, a women who knows how to fasten herself to another person. What does it mean to be a devuka? The act of cleaving to another is the very opposite of selfishness. Individualistic behavior entails looking out for oneself, regarding one's own interests as paramount even when it undermines the needs of the Other. This attitude prevails during the period of the judges, in which tribalism and individualism eclipse any possibility of national unity. Ruth's unprecedented act of attaching herself to another is an important step in beginning the renovation of society so sorely needed at this juncture...[Davak] connotes an all-encompassing connection, a relationship characterized by identification, in which one party embraces the totality of the Other, totally and completely. This description accurately describes Ruth's unusual relationship with Naomi, in which her decision to remain with her mother in law undermines her own self-interest.
(14) "God will deal kindly with you." Rabbi Chanina bar Ada says, "Will show" is what is written, "as you showed with the dead" when you were occupied with their shrouds, "and with me" when they renounced their ketubot. Rabbi Zeira says, "This Megillah does not have anything in it concerned with impurity or purity, nor what is forbidden and what is permitted. So why is it written? To teach us the greatness of the reward for acts of loving kindness."

(22) "And Ruth said: Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you."-- what does "do not urge me" mean? Ruth said to Naomi, "Do not sin against me, don't turn away from me, [telling me] to leave you and return. I intend to convert anyway, and it is better that I do it with you than with someone else." When Naomi heard this, she immediately began to lay out before her the laws of conversion. Naomi said, "My daughter, Jewish women do not go to gentile theaters and circuses." Ruth said, "Where you go, I will go." Naomi said, "My daughter, Jewish women do not dwell in a house where there is no mezuzah." Ruth said, "Where you lodge, I will lodge." "Your people shall be my people," refers to warning and punishment, and "Your God shall be my God" refers to the rest of the mitzvot.

(11) Boaz said in reply, “I have been told of all that you did for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth and came to a people you had not known before. (12) May the LORD reward your deeds. May you have a full recompense from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have sought refuge!”
ולא יתכן שיקחה מחלון וכליון אלו הנשים עד שנתגיירו, והעד 'אל עמה ואל אלקיה'.
And it is inconceivable that Malchun and Chilion would take away these women until they converted, and the witness "to her people and to her God."
