Was It Really Frogs and Insects?
(מה) יְשַׁלַּ֬ח בָּהֶ֣ם עָ֭רֹב וַיֹּאכְלֵ֑ם וּ֝צְפַרְדֵּ֗עַ וַתַּשְׁחִיתֵֽם׃

(45) He inflicted upon them swarms of insects to eat them and frogs to destroy them.

אמר ר' יוחנן כל מקום שהיו רובצין שם מים היו נעשו צפרדעים והיו רואין ועולין לתוכו והיו אומרים אנו שלוחן של מי שאמר והיה העולם והסיפין נבקעין מפניהם.

Said Rabbi Yochanan, Any place where even a drop of water is sprinkled, you get frogs who see and come up into it and they say, 'We are the messengers of the one who spoke and the world came into being,' and they killed them and split open their innards.

(כז) וְאִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י נֹגֵ֛ף אֶת־כָּל־גְּבוּלְךָ֖ בַּֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃

(27) If you refuse to let them go, then I will plague your whole country with Tzefardeim.

.והמפרשים נחלקו במלת צפרדעים. ורבים אמרו שהוא מין דג נמצא במצרים ויקרא בלשון ערב אלתמס''ח. ויוצא מן הנהר וחוטף בני אדם. ואחרים אמרו כי הם הנמצאים ברובי הנהרות שמשמיעים קול והוא הנכון בעיני והוא הידוע

The commentators disagree about the word 'Tzefardeim.' Many of them said that it was a kind of water-based animal that was found in Egypt and called, in Arabic, Altamsich. And it comes out of the river and grabs people.

But others said that they are found in most rivers and make this sound and that seems right in my eyes, and this is the thing that is known.

(כח) וְשָׁרַ֣ץ הַיְאֹר֮ צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ וְעָלוּ֙ וּבָ֣אוּ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבַחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ וְעַל־מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ וּבְבֵ֤ית עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ (כט) וּבְכָ֥ה וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ וּבְכָל־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יַעֲל֖וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים׃

(28) The Nile shall swarm with Tzefardaim, and they shall come up and enter your palace, your bedchamber and your bed, the houses of your courtiers and your people, and your ovens and your kneading bowls. (29) The Tzefardaim shall come up in you and in your people and in all your courtiers.’”

U. Cassuto - A Commentary on the Book of Exodus

The episode of the frogs corresponds to normal Egyptian phenomena. Every year after the inundation of the Nile, the number of frogs in the receding waters is enormous. In this case, therefore, the Bible has in mind an endemic affliction of the country, which occured that year on an exceptional scale and at the right conjecture. The explanation current in the Middle Ages that by these frogs crocodiles are meant is certainly incorrect, for crocodiles would not make their home in human beds, ovens and kneading-bowels and cannot easily be gathered in heaps.

(א) ובכה ובעמך. בְּתוֹךְ מְעֵיהֶם נִכְנָסִין וּמְקַרְקְרִין (סוטה י"א):

(1) ובכה ובעמך AND UPON (or in) THEE AND THY PEOPLE — they made their way right into their bodies and crowed (Exodus Rabbah 10:3).

Moses' words in his prayer remained true for that time and for all generations. In accordance with his words, they shall remain only in the Nile, to this very day the creeping water creature known as the al-timsah remains there. There it lives, and it is said that sometimes it comes out of the Nile where it lives, rising onto the river's edge and swallowing whatever it finds, even two or three humans at a time. Neither spear nor arrow can overcome its body, unless aimed for its belly. Physicians say it is venomous and that touching its body, even after its death, is harmful to man. It is of the tzefarde'a type, and from the power of Moses' words this creature remains there.... This is also how Rabbenu Hananel explained it, and regarding this it states, 'Speak of all His wonders' (Ps. 105:2).

What are these animals that the verse calls Tzefadaim? Most of the commentators say they are small water-creatures who constantly cry out in lakes and rivers [frogs]. But Rabbi Chananel explains that they are the big animals in the Nile who are called, in Arabic Al Tamsach [the crocodile], but the Bible commentators don’t agree with him. But in truth I prefer his words to theirs. We have the verse ‘I will Nogef you in all your borders with Tzefardaim, and the word Nogef is only used to describe a striking where there is death, and I can’t justify the words of Rashi who writes that this is not the language of lethal striking, his evidence doesn’t persuade me …And these little water creatures (frogs) don’t kill people, they don’t Nogef them, so it has to be that the Tzefardea which the Torah describes are ones whose way is to strike and kill as is explained in Psalms 78… And another proof, that they go back to Nile and remain only there, and the little water creatures go everywhere in the rivers of Egypt and also in all the rivers and ponds of the world. And all this proves that these Tzefardeim are not the small creatures which cry, but the great marine creature [Tanin] which is called Al Tamsach which looks like the Tanin and lifts up its upper jaw and eats mightily; a cart or a child right up and these Tzefardaim [crocodiles] come out from the Nile wanting to eat for their existence because they can’t live off the birds of the Nile. So they go onto dry land to eat, and to this day they go from the Nile to the Wilderness to devour people and beasts. And this is the meaning of ‘behold I will Nogef you in all your borders with Tzefardaim’ and they will come from afar – the rivers – until they come into your houses and private rooms to Bikesh children, and they wont be able to run away from them or chase them. This is alluded to in Shemot Rabba where it says there were Egyptian eunuchs – Misrasim Mitzrayim – that is to say that since they ate their children they were left without children, it was as if they were eunuchs. Or maybe they even ate their own limbs of procreation – this also proves that these are not little croacking creatures, but rather the mighty sea creatures who went up and went also into the ovens and the kneading bowels to eat their bread but also the people who were in the midst of the city when they were able.

(א) הנה אנכי נוגף. לרש"י ז"ל לשון נגף בא על הכאה והרי"א דחה דבריו ואמר שאינו בא רק על הכאה שיש בה מיתה,

וכבר האריכו מאיזה מין היו הצפרדעים אם מן הגדולים [קראקאדיל] כדעת הר"ח, או הקטנים [פראש] כדעת הראב"ע, ומשמע שהיו משני המינים הקטנים נכנסים אל הבתים והתנורים והגדולים נשארו ביאור לזכר עולם:

Behold I will Nogef: According to Rashi the word Nogef suggests a striking. And the Ri goes further saying the word is only used to refer to lethal striking.

There are those who think the Tzefardaim are large [enough to strike a blow], as Rabbeinu Chananel thinks. Or maybe they are little creatures according to the Ibn Ezra.

I understand it, that there are two species, little ones that go into the houses and the wash basin and big ones that remain in the river as an eternal memorial.

(יז) כִּ֣י אִם־אֵינְךָ֮ מְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ אֶת־עַמִּי֒ הִנְנִי֩ מַשְׁלִ֨יחַ בְּךָ֜ וּבַעֲבָדֶ֧יךָ וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֛ וּבְבָתֶּ֖יךָ אֶת־הֶעָרֹ֑ב וּמָ֨לְא֜וּ בָּתֵּ֤י מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרֹ֔ב וְגַ֥ם הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥ם עָלֶֽיהָ׃

(17) For if you do not let My people go, I will let loose the swarms of insects against you and your courtiers and your people and your houses; the houses of the Egyptians, and the very ground they stand on, shall be filled with swarming insects.

(א) משליח בך. מְגָרֶה בְךָ, וְכֵן "וְשֶׁן בְּהֵמוֹת אֲשַׁלַּח בָּם" (דברים ל"ב), לְשׁוֹן שִׁסּוּי, אינציט"ר בְּלַעַז:

(1) משליח בך means I WILL INCITE AGAINST THEE. Another example is. (Deuteronomy 32:24) “I will incite (אשלח) the tooth of beasts against them”, where it signifies letting loose an animal against a person; inciter in the vernacular.

(כד) מְזֵ֥י רָעָ֛ב וּלְחֻ֥מֵי רֶ֖שֶׁף וְקֶ֣טֶב מְרִירִ֑י וְשֶׁן־בְּהֵמוֹת֙ אֲשַׁלַּח־בָּ֔ם

(24) Wasting famine, ravaging plague, deadly pestilence, and fanged beasts will I let loose against them.

(ב) את הערב. כָּל מִינֵי הַחַיּוֹת רָעוֹת וּנְחָשִׁים וְעַקְרַבִּים בְּעִרְבּוּבְיָא,

(2) את הערב this means all kinds of wild beasts, serpents, and scorpions in a crowd.

(כז) וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יקוק כִּדְבַ֣ר מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיָּ֙סַר֙ הֶעָרֹ֔ב מִפַּרְעֹ֖ה מֵעֲבָדָ֣יו וּמֵעַמּ֑וֹ לֹ֥א נִשְׁאַ֖ר אֶחָֽד׃

(27) And God did as Moses asked: He removed the Arov from Pharaoh, from his courtiers, and from his people; not one remained.

לָמָּה הֵבִיא עֲלֵיהֶם עָרֹב, לְפִי שֶׁהָיוּ אוֹמְרִים לְיִשְׂרָאֵל צְאוּ וְהָבִיאוּ לָנוּ דֻּבִּים וַאֲרָיוֹת וּנְמֵרִים, כְּדִי לִהְיוֹת מְצֵרִים בָּהֶם, לְפִיכָךְ הֵבִיא עֲלֵיהֶם חַיּוֹת מְעֻרְבָּבוֹת, דִּבְרֵי רַבִּי יְהוּדָה. רַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה אָמַר מִינֵי צְרָעִין וְיַתּוּשִׁין, וְנִרְאִין דְּבָרָיו שֶׁל רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, לְפִי שֶׁבַּצְּפַרְדְּעִים כְּתִיב (שמות ח, ט): וַיָּמֻתוּ הַצְפַרְדְּעִים, לְפִי שֶׁלֹא הָיָה בָּהֶן הֲנָאָה בְּעוֹרוֹתֵיהֶן, אֲבָל עָרֹב שֶׁהָיָה הֲנָאָה בְּעוֹרוֹתֵיהֶן, לְפִיכָךְ לֹא נִשְׁאַר בָּהֶן עַד אֶחָד, שֶׁאִלּוּ הָיוּ צְרָעִין וְיַתּוּשִׁין, הָיָה לָהֶן שֶׁיַּסְרִיחוּ.

Rabbi Yehudah [said it was bears, lions and leopards]. Rabbi Nechemiah said they were species of annoying insects and midges.

And it seems that the words of Rabbi Yehudah are based on an understanding of the Tzefardaim [being frogs], as it says, and the Tzefardaim died since there was no economic benefit from their skins. But wild animals, where there is an economic benefit, not one of them remained - and had they been insects and midges they would have rotted [where they were].
