Wine, Sin and Salvation: A Midrashic Reading of Four Biblical Texts

(א)... (משלי כג): אחריתו כנחש ישך וגו'. מה צפעון זה מפריש בין מיתה לחיים, כך הפריש היין בין אדם לחוה. דאמר רבי יהודה ב"ר אלעאי: אותו העץ שאכל ממנו אדם הראשון ענבים היו. "At the last it bites like a snake and stings like a viper (Mishlei 23). Just as a viper divides between life and death, so too did wine divide Adam and Chava. As Rabbi Yehuda bar Ilai said: the tree that Adam ate from was a grape vine.Their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter;'" these (grapes) brought bitterness to the world. Another interpretation: "And it stings like a viper," just as a viper divides between life and death, so did wine divide between Noah and his sons in the matter of slavery, as it says "And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered" and as a result of this he said "Cursed is Canaan." Another interpretation: "and it stings like a viper," so too did wine divide Lot and his daughters in the matter of mamzerut, as it says "And they made their father drink wine," as a result of which Lot's two daughters became pregnant by their father. Another interpretation: "and it stings like a viper," just as a viper divides between life and death, so too did wine divide between Aharon and his sons through death. As Rabbi Shimon taught: Aharon's sons died because they entered the Ohel"Moed drunk

And he said unto the woman: ‘Yea, hath God said: Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?’ (2) And the woman said unto the serpent: ‘Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; (3) but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said: Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.’ (4) And the serpent said unto the woman: ‘Ye shall not surely die; (5) for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.’ (6) And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. (7) And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves girdles. (8) And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden toward the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. (15) And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; they shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise their heel.’ (16) Unto the woman He said: ‘I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy travail; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.’ (17) And unto Adam He said: ‘Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying: Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. (18) Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field. (19) In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.’ (20) And the man called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. (21) And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them. (22) And the LORD God said: ‘Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.’ (23) Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. (24) So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way to the tree of life.

(18) And the sons of Noah, that went forth from the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan. (19) These three were the sons of Noah, and of these was the whole earth overspread. (20) And Noah, the man of the land, began and planted a vineyard. (21) And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. (22) And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. (23) And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness. (24) And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done unto him. (25) And he said: Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. (26) And he said: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; And let Canaan be their servant. (27) God aenlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; And let Canaan be their servant.

(ד) אמר רבי חנין בשם רבי שמואל בר יצחק: ויגל אין כתיב כאן, אלא ויתגל גרם גלות לו ולדורות

Rabbi Chanin said in the name of Rabbi Shmuel ben Yitzchak "it does not say 'and he was uncovered,' but rather 'and he was exiled,': he caused exile for himself and for later generations.

Zohar 1:192a

"And Noah began to he a husbandman and he planted a vineyard" (Gen. IX. 20).

In their comments on these words, Rabbi Jehuda and Rabbi Jose greatly differed, the one affirming that Noah planted a vine taken from the garden of Eden, the other maintaining that he had plucked it by its roots before entering the ark and now planted it in suitable soil, after which it brought forth grades, the juice of which after expressing, he drank and became intoxicated therewith.

Said Rabbi Simeon: In this verse is included a fragment of the hidden wisdom. When Noah, desirous of investigating into the cause of man's fall from his primal state of holy innocence. not with the intention of imitating it but of healing the sin of the world, he soon realized his inability to achieve his object.

(29) And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt. (30) And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. (31) And the first-born said unto the younger: ‘Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth. (32) Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.’ (33) And they made their father drink wine that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. (34) And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger: ‘Behold, I lay yesternight with my father. Let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.’ (35) And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. (36) Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. (37) And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab—the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. (38) And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi—the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
The Dedication of the Mikdash: Preparation and Calamity:

(ה) וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל הָעֵדָה זֶה הַדָּבָר אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יקוק לַעֲשׂוֹת. (ו) וַיַּקְרֵב מֹשֶׁה אֶת אַהֲרֹן וְאֶת בָּנָיו וַיִּרְחַץ אֹתָם בַּמָּיִם. (ז) וַיִּתֵּן עָלָיו אֶת הַכֻּתֹּנֶת וַיַּחְגֹּר אֹתוֹ בָּאַבְנֵט וַיַּלְבֵּשׁ אֹתוֹ אֶת הַמְּעִיל וַיִּתֵּן עָלָיו אֶת הָאֵפֹד וַיַּחְגֹּר אֹתוֹ בְּחֵשֶׁב הָאֵפֹד וַיֶּאְפֹּד לוֹ בּוֹ. (ח) וַיָּשֶׂם עָלָיו אֶת הַחֹשֶׁן וַיִּתֵּן אֶל הַחֹשֶׁן אֶת הָאוּרִים וְאֶת הַתֻּמִּים. (ט) וַיָּשֶׂם אֶת הַמִּצְנֶפֶת עַל רֹאשׁוֹ וַיָּשֶׂם עַל הַמִּצְנֶפֶת אֶל מוּל פָּנָיו אֵת צִיץ הַזָּהָב נֵזֶר הַקֹּדֶשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יקוק אֶת מֹשֶׁה. (י) וַיִּקַּח מֹשֶׁה אֶת שֶׁמֶן הַמִּשְׁחָה וַיִּמְשַׁח אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְאֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר בּוֹ וַיְקַדֵּשׁ אֹתָם.

(5) And Moses said unto the congregation: ‘This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded to be done.’ (6) And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. (7) And he put upon him the tunic, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the skilfully woven band of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith. (8) And he placed the breastplate upon him; and in the breastplate he put the Urim and the Thummim. (9) And he set the mitre upon his head; and upon the mitre, in front, did he set the golden plate, the holy crown; as the LORD commanded Moses. (10) And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.

(לא) וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל אַהֲרֹן וְאֶל בָּנָיו בַּשְּׁלוּ אֶת הַבָּשָׂר פֶּתַח אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וְשָׁם תֹּאכְלוּ אֹתוֹ וְאֶת הַלֶּחֶם אֲשֶׁר בְּסַל הַמִּלֻּאִים כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוֵּיתִי לֵאמֹר אַהֲרֹן וּבָנָיו יֹאכְלֻהוּ. (31) And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons: ‘Boil the flesh at the door of the tent of meeting; and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of consecration, as I commanded, saying: Aaron and his sons shall eat it. (32) And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire. (33) And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting seven days, until the days of your consecration be fulfilled; for He shall consecrate you seven days. (34) As hath been done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make atonement for you. (35) And at the door of the tent of meeting shall ye abide day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not; for so I am commanded. (36) And Aaron and his sons did all the things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.

(י) וּלֲהַבְדִּיל בֵּין הַקֹּדֶשׁ וּבֵין הַחֹל וּבֵין הַטָּמֵא וּבֵין הַטָּהוֹר. (יא) וּלְהוֹרֹת אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵת כָּל הַחֻקִּים אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר יקוק אֲלֵיהֶם בְּיַד מֹשֶׁה.

(1) And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. (2) And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. (3) Then Moses said unto Aaron: ‘This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ And Aaron held his peace. (4) And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them: ‘Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.’ (5) So they drew near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said. (6) And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: ‘Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither tend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. (7) And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.’ And they did according to the word of Moses. (8) And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying: (9) ’Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. (10) And that ye may put difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; (11) and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.’
