וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל כָּל־הָ֨עֵדָ֤ה מִדְבַּר־צִן֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב הָעָ֖ם בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ וַתָּ֤מָת שָׁם֙ מִרְיָ֔ם וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר שָֽׁם׃ וְלֹא־הָ֥יָה מַ֖יִם לָעֵדָ֑ה וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹֽן׃ וַיָּ֥רֶב הָעָ֖ם עִם־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר וְל֥וּ גָוַ֛עְנוּ בִּגְוַ֥ע אַחֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־קְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃ וְלָמָ֤ה הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֙נוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָבִ֣יא אֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הָרָ֖ע הַזֶּ֑ה לֹ֣א ׀ מְק֣וֹם זֶ֗רַע וּתְאֵנָ֤ה וְגֶ֙פֶן֙ וְרִמּ֔וֹן וּמַ֥יִם אַ֖יִן לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃ וַיָּבֹא֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאַהֲרֹ֜ן מִפְּנֵ֣י הַקָּהָ֗ל אֶל־פֶּ֙תַח֙ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֵּרָ֥א כְבוֹד־יְהוָ֖ה אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (פ) וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ קַ֣ח אֶת־הַמַּטֶּ֗ה וְהַקְהֵ֤ל אֶת־הָעֵדָה֙ אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן אָחִ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧ם אֶל־הַסֶּ֛לַע לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְנָתַ֣ן מֵימָ֑יו וְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ לָהֶ֥ם מַ֙יִם֙ מִן־הַסֶּ֔לַע וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ אֶת־הָעֵדָ֖ה וְאֶת־בְּעִירָֽם׃ וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־הַמַּטֶּ֖ה מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃ וַיַּקְהִ֜לוּ מֹשֶׁ֧ה וְאַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶת־הַקָּהָ֖ל אֶל־פְּנֵ֣י הַסָּ֑לַע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְעוּ־נָא֙ הַמֹּרִ֔ים הֲמִן־הַסֶּ֣לַע הַזֶּ֔ה נוֹצִ֥יא לָכֶ֖ם מָֽיִם׃ וַיָּ֨רֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־יָד֗וֹ וַיַּ֧ךְ אֶת־הַסֶּ֛לַע בְּמַטֵּ֖הוּ פַּעֲמָ֑יִם וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים וַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּ הָעֵדָ֖ה וּבְעִירָֽם׃ (ס) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֒ יַ֚עַן לֹא־הֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣ם בִּ֔י לְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִי לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָכֵ֗ן לֹ֤א תָבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶת־הַקָּהָ֣ל הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי לָהֶֽם׃ הֵ֚מָּה מֵ֣י מְרִיבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־רָב֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁ בָּֽם׃ (ס)
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “When Pharaoh speaks to you and says, ‘Produce your marvel,’ you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it down before Pharaoh.’ It shall turn into a serpent.” So Moses and Aaron came before Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded: Aaron cast down his rod in the presence of Pharaoh and his courtiers, and it turned into a serpent. Then Pharaoh, also, summoned the wise men and the sorcerers; and the Egyptian magicians, in turn, did the same with their spells; each cast down his rod, and they turned into serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed their rods. Yet Pharaoh’s heart stiffened and he did not heed them, as the LORD had said.
וַיִּקְרָא גַּם פַּרְעֹה לַחֲכָמִים וְלַמְכַשְּׁפִים, בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה הִתְחִיל פַּרְעֹה מְשַׂחֵק עֲלֵיהֶם וּמְקַרְקֵר אַחֲרֵיהֶם כְּתַרְנְגֹלֶת, וְאוֹמֵר לָהֶם, כָּךְ אוֹתוֹתָיו שֶׁל אֱלֹהֵיכֶם, בְּנֹהַג שֶׁבָּעוֹלָם בְּנֵי אָדָם מוֹלִיכִין פְּרַקְמַטְיָא לְמָקוֹם שֶׁצְּרִיכִין לָהֶם, כְּלוּם מְבִיאִין מוּרְיָיס לְאַסְפַּמְיָא, דָּגִים לְעַכּוֹ, אֵין אַתֶּם יוֹדְעִין שֶׁכָּל הַכְּשָׁפִים בִּרְשׁוּתִי הֵן, מִיָּד שָׁלַח וְהֵבִיא תִּינוֹקוֹת מִן אִסְכּוֹלִי שֶׁלָּהֶם, וְעָשׂוּ אַף הֵם כָּךְ, וְלֹא עוֹד אֶלָּא קָרָא לְאִשְׁתּוֹ וְעָשְׂתָה כָךְ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּקְרָא גַּם פַּרְעֹה, מַהוּ גַּם, שֶׁאַף לְאִשְׁתּוֹ קָרָא וְעָשְׂתָה כֵן. וַיַּעֲשׂוּ גַּם הֵם חַרְטֻמֵּי מִצְרַיִם, מַהוּ גַּם, אֲפִלּוּ הַתִּינוֹקוֹת שֶׁל אַרְבַּע וְחָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים קָרָא וְעָשׂוּ כֵן.
וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ אִישׁ מַטֵּהוּ, אָמְרוּ יוֹחָנִי וּמַמְרֵא לְמשֶׁה, תֶּבֶן אַתָּה מַכְנִיס לָעָפְרִיִּים. אָמַר לָהֶם לְמָתָא יַרְקָא יַרְקָא שְׁקוֹל. וַיִּבְלַע מַטֵּה אַהֲרֹן אֶת מַטֹּתָם,
(6) 6. "And also called Pharaoh to the wise men and to the sorcerers." At that instant, Pharaoh began to laugh at them [Moses and Aaron] and to screech at them like a chicken, and to say to them: 'Thus are the signs of your G-d? The way of the world is for people to ply their produce in a place that needs them. Nobody brings fish broth to Espamia [Spain], Fish to Ako [All places already well-supplied with fish]. Do you not know that all the sorcerers are under my dominion?' Immediately [Pharaoh] sent for and brought in children from their school. And they did exactly [as Aaron had done]. And not only that! But Pharaoh even called his own wife in and she did exactly [as Aaron had done]. As it says: "And also called Pharaoh." What is the "also" [referring to]? That even to his wife he called. [The verse also says] "And they did also the sorcerers of Egypt." [Here], what does the "also" [refer to]? Even the 4-5 year old children were called and they also did this.
(7) 7. "And each man cast his staff." Yohani and Mamreh [two Egyptian arch-sorcerers] said to Moses: 'You have brought grain to Aphri'im [A city will plenty of grain].' [Moses] responded to them: 'To a city of vegetables, take vegetables.' "And the staff of Aaron of swallowed their [the sorcerers'] staffs."
וְאַחַר בָּאוּ משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן...אָמַר רַבִּי חִיָּא בַּר אַבָּא, אוֹתוֹ הַיּוֹם יוֹם פְּרוּזְבּוּטִי שֶׁל פַּרְעֹה הָיָה, וּבָאוּ כָּל הַמְלָכִים כֻּלָּן לְכַבְּדוֹ, וְהֵבִיאוּ דּוֹרָאוֹת שֶׁל עֲטָרוֹת, וְהָיוּ מַעֲטִירִין אוֹתוֹ, שֶׁהוּא יוֹם קוֹזְמוֹקְרַטוֹר, וְהֵבִיאוּ אֱלֹהֵיהֶן עִמָּהֶן, מִשֶּׁעִטְּרוּ אוֹתוֹ, הָיוּ משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן עוֹמְדִין עַל פֶּתַח פַּלְטֵרִין שֶׁל פַּרְעֹה, נִכְנְסוּ עֲבָדָיו וְאָמְרוּ שְׁנֵי זְקֵנִים עוֹמְדִין עַל הַפֶּתַח, אָמַר לָהֶן, יַעֲלוּ. כֵּיוָן שֶׁעָלוּ הָיָה מִסְתַּכֵּל בָּהֶן שֶׁמָּא יְעַטְּרוּ אוֹתוֹ, אוֹ שֶׁמָּא יִתְּנוּ לוֹ כְּתָבִים, וְאַף לֹא שָׁאֲלוּ בִּשְׁלוֹמוֹ. אָמַר לָהֶם מִי אַתֶּם, אָמְרוּ לוֹ שְׁלוּחָיו שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אָנוּ. מָה אַתֶּם מְבַקְּשִׁים, אָמְרוּ לוֹ: כֹּה אָמַר ה' שַׁלַּח אֶת עַמִּי וגו', אוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה כָּעַס, וְאָמַר: מִי ה' אֲשֶׁר אֶשְׁמַע בְּקֹלוֹ לְשַׁלַּח אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, לֹא הָיָה יוֹדֵעַ לְשַׁלַּח לִי עֲטָרָה, אֶלָּא בִּדְבָרִים אַתֶּם בָּאִים אֵלַי, לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אֶת ה' וְגַם אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא אֲשַׁלֵּחַ. אָמַר לָהֶם, הַמְתִּינוּ לִי עַד שֶׁאֲחַפֵּשׂ בַּסֵּפֶר שֶׁלִּי, מִיָּד נִכְנַס לְבֵית אַרְמוֹן שֶׁלּוֹ וְהָיָה מַבִּיט בְּכָל אֻמָּה וְאֻמָּה וֵאלֹהֶיהָ, הִתְחִיל קוֹרֵא אֱלֹהֵי מוֹאָב וֵאלֹהֵי עַמּוֹן וֵאלֹהֵי צִידוֹן, אָמַר לָהֶם חִפַּשְׂתִּי שְׁמוֹ בְּבֵית גְּנָזַי וְלֹא מָצָאתִי אוֹתוֹ. אָמַר רַבִּי לֵוִי מָשָׁל לְמָה הַדָּבָר דּוֹמֶה, לְכֹהֵן שֶׁהָיָה לוֹ עֶבֶד שׁוֹטֶה, יָצָא הַכֹּהֵן חוּץ לַמְדִינָה הָלַךְ הָעֶבֶד לְבַקֵּשׁ אֶת רַבּוֹ בְּבֵית הַקְּבָרוֹת, הִתְחִיל צוֹוֵחַ לִבְנֵי אָדָם שֶׁעוֹמְדִים שָׁם לֹא רְאִיתֶם בְּכָאן רַבִּי, אָמְרוּ לוֹ רַבָּךְ לָאו כֹּהֵן הוּא, אָמַר לָהֶן הֵן, אָמְרוּ לוֹ שׁוֹטֶה מִי רָאָה כֹּהֵן בְּבֵית הַקְּבָרוֹת. כָּךְ אָמְרוּ משֶׁה וְאַהֲרֹן לְפַרְעֹה, שׁוֹטֶה, דַּרְכָּן שֶׁל מֵתִים לְתָבְעָן בֵּין הַחַיִּים, שֶׁמָּא הַחַיִּים אֵצֶל הַמֵּתִים. אֱלֹהֵינוּ חַי הוּא, אֵלּוּ שֶׁאַתָּה אוֹמֵר, מֵתִים הֵם, אֲבָל אֱלֹהֵינוּ הוּא אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים וּמֶלֶךְ עוֹלָם. אָמַר לָהֶם בָּחוּר הוּא אוֹ זָקֵן הוּא, כַּמָּה שְׁנוֹתָיו, כַּמָּה עֲיָרוֹת כָּבַשׁ, כַּמָּה מְדִינוֹת לָכַד, כַּמָּה שָׁנִים יֵשׁ לוֹ מִיּוֹם שֶׁעָלָה לַמַּלְכוּת. אָמְרוּ לוֹ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ כֹּחוֹ וּגְבוּרָתוֹ מָלֵא עוֹלָם, הוּא הָיָה עַד שֶׁלֹא נִבְרָא הָעוֹלָם וְהוּא יִהְיֶה בְּסוֹף כָּל הָעוֹלָם, וְהוּא יְצָרְךָ וְנָתַן בְּךָ רוּחַ חַיִּים. אָמַר לָהֶם וּמַה מַּעֲשָׂיו, אָמְרוּ לוֹ (ישעיה נא, יג): נוֹטֶה שָׁמַיִם וְיֹסֵד אָרֶץ, קוֹלוֹ חוֹצֵב לַהֲבוֹת אֵשׁ, מְפָרֵק הָרִים וּמְשַׁבֵּר סְלָעִים, קַשְׁתּוֹ אֵשׁ, חִצָּיו שַׁלְהֶבֶת, רוֹמְחוֹ לַפִּיד, מָגִנּוֹ עֲנָנִים, חַרְבּוֹ בָּרָק, יוֹצֵר הָרִים וּגְבָעוֹת, מְכַסֶּה הָרִים בַּעֲשָׂבִים, מוֹרִיד גְּשָׁמִים וּטְלָלִים, מַפְרִיחַ דְּשָׁאִים, וְעוֹנֶה חַיּוֹת, צָר אֶת הָעֻבָּר בִּמְעֵי אִמּוֹ וּמוֹצִיאוֹ לַאֲוִיר הָעוֹלָם, (דניאל ב, כא): מְהַעְדֵּה מַלְכִין וּמְהָקֵים מַלְכִין. אָמַר לָהֶם, מִתְּחִלָּה שֶׁקֶר אַתֶּם אוֹמְרִים, כִּי אֲנִי הוּא אֲדוֹן הָעוֹלָם וַאֲנִי בָּרָאתִי עַצְמִי וְאֶת נִילוּס, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (יחזקאל כט, ג): לִי יְאֹרִי וַאֲנִי עֲשִׂיתִנִי.
"And after came Moses and Aaron...Rebi Hiya son of Abbah said: 'On that day it was the anniversary of the inauguration of Pharaoh. And all the kings came to honor him and they brought tribute of crowns. And they would crown him as it was the day of the lord of the universe [Pharaoh]. And they brought their gods with them. When they crowned him, Moses and Aaron were standing at the entrance of the palace of Pharaoh. [Pharaoh's] servants entered and they said: 'Two elders are standing at the entrance.' [Pharaoh] said to them: 'Let them come.' When [Moses and Aaron] entered, [Pharaoh] gazed upon them to see if they would crown him or give him written tidings, and they didn't even inquire of his welfare. [Pharaoh] said to them: 'Who are you?' [Moses and Aaron] responded: 'We are the messengers of the Holy One, Source of All Blessing be He.' [Pharaoh inquired] 'What do you want?' They said to [Pharaoh]: "Thus saith the Lord: 'Send forth my nation'..." At that moment, Pharaoh became angry and said: '"Who is Hashem that I should listen to Him to send forth the Israelites." He didn't know to send me a crown. Rather with words you come to me. "I don't know Hashem, and I also won't send forth the Israelites."' [Furthermore, Pharaoh] said to [Moses and Aaron]: 'wait for me until I look in my book.' Immediately, he entered his palace and examined every nation and its god and began to read of the gods of Moab, of Ammon, and of Sidon. [Afterward, Pharaoh] said to Moses and Aaron: 'I have searched for His Name in my store houses, and I didn't find Him...Is your God a youth or old? How old is he? How many cities has he subdued? How many countries has he conquered? How many years has it been since he first ascended to royalty?' [Moses and Aaron responded]: 'Our God, His Strength and Might fills the world. He was before the world was created, and He shall be beyond the world's end. And He created you, and put into you the spirit of life.' [Pharaoh responded]: 'And what are His accomplishments?' And they responded to him: "He stretches the Heavens and establishes the earth" (Isaiah 51:13). His voice kindles flames of fire, uproots mountains, and smashes rocks. His bow is fire, His arrows are flames, His spear is a pillar, His shield is clouds, His sword is lightning. He creates mountains and valley, covers mountains with grasses, makes the rain and dew descend, makes grasses sprout, and and afflicts the wild beasts. He inflicts pain on the fetus in the womb of its mother and extracts it to the world. "Removes kings and establishes kings" (Daniel 2:21).' And [Pharaoh responded] to them: 'You state falsehoods. Because I am the master of the world, and I created myself and the Nile.' As the verse says: "To me [Pharaoh] is my river, I made it for me." (Ezekiel 29:3).
The LORD replied to Moses, “See, I place you in the role of God to Pharaoh, with your brother Aaron as your prophet.
Rabbi Seemone says: 'The matter is comparable to the master of a branch [Likely a fasces, which indicated the rank of magistrate in Rome]. That he would walk about outside and the branch was in his hand. The people said: 'If not for the branch in his hand he would not be honored.' The king heard and said to [the master of the branch]: 'Stop carrying the branch and go outside. All who don't inquire of your welfare, I shall behead.' Similarly, the Egyptians said: 'Moses is not able to do anything without the staff. With it, he hit the Nile. With it, he brought the plagues.' Since the Israelites entered the sea, and the Egyptians stood behind them. The Holy One, Source of All Blessing is He said to Moses: 'Put away your staff, so that the Egyptians will not say that if not for your staff, you couldn't split the sea. As it says "Raise your staff."
ויט משה את ידו על הים, התחיל הים עומד כנגדו אמר לו משה בשם הקב"ה שיבקע ולא קבל עליו הראהו את המטה ולא קבל עליו. משל למה הדבר דומה למלך שהיו לו שתי גנות זו לפנים מזו מכר את הפנימית ובא הלוקח ליכנס ולא הניחו השומר אמר לו הלוקח לשומר בשם המלך ולא קבל עליו הראהו את הטבעת ולא קבל עליו עד שניהג הלוקח את המלך בעצמו ובא כיון שבא המלך התחיל השומר בורח אמר לו כל היום הייתי אומר לך בשם המלך ולא קבלת עליך ועכשיו מפני מה אתה בורח אמר לו לא מפניך אני בורח אלא מפני המלך, כך עמד משה על הים אמר לו משה בשם הקב"ה שיבקע ולא קבל עליו הראהו המטה ולא קבל עליו עד שנגלה הקב"ה עליו בכבודו וכיון שנגלה הקב"ה בכבודו ובגבורתו התחיל הים בורח שנ' הים ראה וינס (תהלים קיד) אמר לו משה כל היום הייתי אומר לך בשם הקב"ה ולא קבלת עליך עכשיו מפני מה אתה בורח מה לך הים כי תנוס, אמר לו לא מפניך בן עמרם אני בורח אלא מלפני אדון חולי ארץ מלפני אלהי יעקב ההופכי הצור אגם מים חלמיש למעינו מים:
(Exodus 14:21) "And Moses stretched his hand over the sea": and the sea resisted — whereupon Moses commanded it to split in the name of the Holy One Blessed be He; but it continued to resist. He showed him the staff, but it continued to resist. An analogy: A king had two gardens, one within the other. He sold the inner and the buyer came to take possession, but the watchman barred him. The buyer said: "In the name of the king," but he still resisted. He showed him the (king's) signet, but he still resisted — until he conducted the king himself there — at which the watchman began to flee. At this, the buyer said: The whole day I told you "In the name of the king," and you did not accept that. Why are you fleeing now? — whereupon the watchman said: I am not fleeing you, but the king. Thus, Moses stood at the sea and commanded it to split in the name of the Holy One Blessed be He, to no avail. He showed him the staff, to no avail — until the Holy One Blessed be He revealed Himself upon it in His full glory and strength — whereupon the sea fled, viz. (Psalms 114:3) "The sea saw and fled." Moses said to it: The whole day I said to you "In the name of the Holy One Blessed be He," and you resisted. Why do you flee now? "What ails you, O sea, that you are fleeing?" (Ibid. 5) — at which the sea replied: I am not fleeing you, son of Amram, but (Ibid. 7-8) "Before the Master, quake, O earth, before the G-d of Israel, who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water!" (Exodus 14:21)
וַיִּסְעוּ֙ מֵֽאֵילִ֔ם וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ כָּל־עֲדַ֤ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־מִדְבַּר־סִ֔ין אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֵּין־אֵילִ֖ם וּבֵ֣ין סִינָ֑י בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה עָשָׂ֥ר יוֹם֙ לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י לְצֵאתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ וילינו [וַיִּלּ֜וֹנוּ] כָּל־עֲדַ֧ת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֲלֵהֶ֜ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מִֽי־יִתֵּ֨ן מוּתֵ֤נוּ בְיַד־יְהוָה֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּשִׁבְתֵּ֙נוּ֙ עַל־סִ֣יר הַבָּשָׂ֔ר בְּאָכְלֵ֥נוּ לֶ֖חֶם לָשֹׂ֑בַע כִּֽי־הוֹצֵאתֶ֤ם אֹתָ֙נוּ֙ אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה לְהָמִ֛ית אֶת־כָּל־הַקָּהָ֥ל הַזֶּ֖ה בָּרָעָֽב׃...וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֔ן אֶֽל־כָּל־בְּנֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עֶ֕רֶב וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֧י יְהוָ֛ה הוֹצִ֥יא אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ וּבֹ֗קֶר וּרְאִיתֶם֙ אֶת־כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה בְּשָׁמְע֥וֹ אֶת־תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶ֖ם עַל־יְהוָ֑ה וְנַ֣חְנוּ מָ֔ה כִּ֥י תלונו [תַלִּ֖ינוּ] עָלֵֽינוּ׃ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֗ה בְּתֵ֣ת יְהוָה֩ לָכֶ֨ם בָּעֶ֜רֶב בָּשָׂ֣ר לֶאֱכֹ֗ל וְלֶ֤חֶם בַּבֹּ֙קֶר֙ לִשְׂבֹּ֔עַ בִּשְׁמֹ֤עַ יְהוָה֙ אֶת־תְּלֻנֹּ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־אַתֶּ֥ם מַלִּינִ֖ם עָלָ֑יו וְנַ֣חְנוּ מָ֔ה לֹא־עָלֵ֥ינוּ תְלֻנֹּתֵיכֶ֖ם כִּ֥י עַל־יְהוָֽה׃ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֱמֹ֗ר אֶֽל־כָּל־עֲדַת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל קִרְב֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֣י שָׁמַ֔ע אֵ֖ת תְּלֻנֹּתֵיכֶֽם׃ וַיְהִ֗י כְּדַבֵּ֤ר אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־כָּל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּפְנ֖וּ אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְהִנֵּה֙ כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה נִרְאָ֖ה בֶּעָנָֽן׃ (פ) וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ שָׁמַ֗עְתִּי אֶת־תְּלוּנֹּת֮ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ דַּבֵּ֨ר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר בֵּ֤ין הָֽעַרְבַּ֙יִם֙ תֹּאכְל֣וּ בָשָׂ֔ר וּבַבֹּ֖קֶר תִּשְׂבְּעוּ־לָ֑חֶם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ וַיְהִ֣י בָעֶ֔רֶב וַתַּ֣עַל הַשְּׂלָ֔ו וַתְּכַ֖ס אֶת־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וּבַבֹּ֗קֶר הָֽיְתָה֙ שִׁכְבַ֣ת הַטַּ֔ל סָבִ֖יב לַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ וַתַּ֖עַל שִׁכְבַ֣ת הַטָּ֑ל וְהִנֵּ֞ה עַל־פְּנֵ֤י הַמִּדְבָּר֙ דַּ֣ק מְחֻסְפָּ֔ס דַּ֥ק כַּכְּפֹ֖ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ וַיִּרְא֣וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ אִ֤ישׁ אֶל־אָחִיו֙ מָ֣ן ה֔וּא כִּ֛י לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ מַה־ה֑וּא וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם ה֣וּא הַלֶּ֔חֶם אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֧ן יְהוָ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם לְאָכְלָֽה׃
Setting out from Elim, the whole Israelite community came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. In the wilderness, the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots, when we ate our fill of bread! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to starve this whole congregation to death.”...So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “By evening you shall know it was the LORD who brought you out from the land of Egypt; and in the morning you shall behold the Presence of the LORD, because He has heard your grumblings against the LORD. For who are we that you should grumble against us? Since it is the LORD,” Moses continued, “who will give you flesh to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to the full, because the LORD has heard the grumblings you utter against Him, what is our part? Your grumbling is not against us, but against the LORD!” Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole Israelite community: Advance toward the LORD, for He has heard your grumbling.” And as Aaron spoke to the whole Israelite community, they turned toward the wilderness, and there, in a cloud, appeared the Presence of the LORD. The LORD spoke to Moses: “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Speak to them and say: By evening you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; and you shall know that I the LORD am your God.” In the evening quail appeared and covered the camp; in the morning there was a fall of dew about the camp. When the fall of dew lifted, there, over the surface of the wilderness, lay a fine and flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?”—for they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “That is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.
RABBI SIMEON BEN JOCHAI said: When the Holy One, blessed be He, was revealed to Moses out of the thorn-bush, in order to send him to Egypt, Moses spake before the Holy One, blessed be He (saying): Sovereign of all the worlds! Swear to me that all things which I desire to do, Thou wilt do, so that I should not speak words before Pharaoh, and Thou wilt not fulfil them, for then will he slay me. And He swore unto him that "whatsoever thou || desirest to do, I will do, except with reference to two things," (namely,) to let him enter the land (of Canaan), and (to postpone) the day of (his) death. Whence do we know that He swore unto him? Because it is said, "By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, the word is gone forth from my mouth in righteousness" (Isa. 45:23). When Israel received the commandments they forgot their God after forty days, and they said to Aaron: The Egyptians were carrying their god, and they were singing and uttering hymns before it, and they saw it before them. Make unto us a god like the gods of the Egyptians, and let us see it before us, as it is said, "Up, make us a god" (Ex. 32:1).
(ח) וְהָיָ֗ה כְּצֵ֤את מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־הָאֹ֔הֶל יָק֙וּמוּ֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם וְנִ֨צְּב֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֣תַח אָהֳל֑וֹ וְהִבִּ֙יטוּ֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַד־בֹּא֖וֹ הָאֹֽהֱלָה׃ (ט) וְהָיָ֗ה כְּבֹ֤א מֹשֶׁה֙ הָאֹ֔הֱלָה יֵרֵד֙ עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן וְעָמַ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וְדִבֶּ֖ר עִם־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (י) וְרָאָ֤ה כָל־הָעָם֙ אֶת־עַמּ֣וּד הֶֽעָנָ֔ן עֹמֵ֖ד פֶּ֣תַח הָאֹ֑הֶל וְקָ֤ם כָּל־הָעָם֙ וְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ פֶּ֥תַח אָהֳלֽוֹ׃ (יא) וְדִבֶּ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יְדַבֵּ֥ר אִ֖ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְשָׁב֙ אֶל־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וּמְשָׁ֨רְת֜וֹ יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ בִּן־נוּן֙ נַ֔עַר לֹ֥א יָמִ֖ישׁ מִתּ֥וֹךְ הָאֹֽהֶל׃ (ס)
(כה) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה הָשֵׁ֞ב אֶת־מַטֵּ֤ה אַהֲרֹן֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָעֵד֔וּת לְמִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת לְא֖וֹת לִבְנֵי־מֶ֑רִי וּתְכַ֧ל תְּלוּנֹּתָ֛ם מֵעָלַ֖י וְלֹ֥א יָמֻֽתוּ׃ (כו) וַיַּ֖עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֹת֖וֹ כֵּ֥ן עָשָֽׂה׃ (ס) (כז) וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵ֥ן גָּוַ֛עְנוּ אָבַ֖דְנוּ כֻּלָּ֥נוּ אָבָֽדְנוּ׃ (כח) כֹּ֣ל הַקָּרֵ֧ב ׀ הַקָּרֵ֛ב אֶל־מִשְׁכַּ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה יָמ֑וּת הַאִ֥ם תַּ֖מְנוּ לִגְוֺֽעַ׃ (ס)
קח את אהרן וגו' והפשט את אהרן וגו'...וכל ישראל מביטין בהן שעלו שלשה ולא ירדו כי אם שנים, נחלקו לשלש כתות, אחת אומרת הרגו משה שהיה מתקנא בו, ואחת אומרת אלעזר הרגו שהיה מבקש לירש את הכהונה גדולה, ואחת אומרת דרך שמים מת, מה עשה הקב"ה רמז למלאכים ופתחו את המערה והוציאו ארונו של אהרן והיתה פורחת בשמים והמלאכים מקלסין לפניו וכל ישראל רואין אותו שנאמר ויראו כל העדה כי גוע אהרן
"Take Aaron and etc. ... and undress Aaron"... and all of Israel were staring after them [and saw] that three had ascended and only two had returned. They were divided into three groups. One group said that Moses killed [Aaron] because he was jealous of him. And one said Elazar killed [Aaron] because he wished to inherit the great priesthood. And one said that Aaron died a death by Heaven. What did G-d do? He signaled to the angels and they opened up the cave and they removed the coffin of Aaron and they were flying in the Heavens and the angels were praising before it. And all the Israelites saw this as it says: "And the entire assembly saw that Aaron had expired"
ויבכו את אהרן שלשים יום כל בית ישראל...ומה ת"ל ורבים השיב מעון מלמד כשהיה אהרן מהלך בדרך אם פגע באדם רע או רשע נותן לו שלום, למחר בקש אותו האיש לילך ולעבור עבירה אמר אוי לי איך אשר פני ואראה את אהרן בושתי הימנו שנתן לי שלום ונמצא [אותו אדם מונע עצמו] מלילך לעבירה, וכן שני בני אדם שעושין מריבה זה עם זה הלך אהרן וישב לו אצל אחד מהן ואומר לו ראה חברך מה הוא אמר אהיה מטרף את לבי [מחליש] את דעתי מתלש בשערי איך אשא עיני ואראה בחברי בושתי הימנו שאני הוא שסרחתי עליו היה יושב אצלו עד שמוציא כל קנאה שבלבו, שוב הולך אצל חברו ואומר לו כענין זה, וכשפגעו זה בזה חבקו ונשקו זה לזה לכך ויבכו אותו כל בית ישראל. כי בא ישראל דרך האתרים (כתוב ברמז תשכ"ח):
"And they [the Children of Israel] cried for Aaron for thirty days...And what is meant by the saying 'and many he returned from iniquity?' It teaches that when Aaron would walk along the journey, if he would encounter a bad or wicked person, he would greet him. The next day, if that person sought to perform a transgression, [the wicked person] would say 'Woe is me! How can I face Aaron again? I would be so embarrassed as he greeted me. And so, we find, the person would refrain from sin...
