[Evening became morning]: The sixth day. And the heavens and the earth and all that filled them were complete.
And on the seventh day God completed the labor He had performed, and He refrained on the seventh day from all the labor which He had performed. And God blessed the seventh day and He sanctified it, for He then refrained from all his labor - from the act of creation that God had performed.
Permit me, distinguished ones, rabbis, guests and colleagues:
Blessed are You, the Lord our God, King of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine. (Amen)
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments, and hoped for us, and with love and intent invested us with His sacred Sabbath, as a memorial to the deed of Creation. It is the first among the holy festivals, commemorating the exodus from Egypt. For You chose us, and sanctified us, out of all nations, and with love and intent You invested us with Your Holy Sabbath.
Blessed are You, Adonai, Sanctifier of the Sabbath. (Amen)
Our Rabbis taught: "Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it." (Ex. 20:7)-Remember it over wine.
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai taught: Shabbat said to God: "Everyone else has a mate (Monday has Tuesday, etc.), but I have nothing!" God answered saying: "The community of Israel will be your mate."
Ahad Ha'Am (1856-1927)
More than the Jewish People have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jewish People.

{The order of Kiddush goes as follows:}one says Vayechlu---even though it has already been said in the evening prayers, you return and say it at home in order to fulfill this obligation for your family and members of your household. You then say "Creator of the fruit of the vines" and Kiddush where you say "remembering the acts of creation," as we are resting on Shabbat just as Gd rested after the creation of the world. And Shabbat is called "the beginning of the holy convocations" because Shabbat is remembered first in the mentioning of the holidays.
Remember the Exodus from Egypt---one could say that Shabbat is the beginning of the holy convocations BECAUSE it recalls the exodus from Egypt. And Rambam (Maimonides) says that the Shabbat itself is a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt because in the course of the Exodus we were shown the full capacity of Gd's ability to show strength and possibility, and this is the meaning of a variety of biblical verses....The exodus from Egypt serves as physical proof of God's majesty. Shabbat is a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt and the Exodus from Egypt is a remembrance of Shabbat, as God is constantly renewing our world with miracles that he himself created at the time of the creation of the world.
