בָּא לוֹ אֵצֶל פָּרוֹ, וּפָרוֹ הָיָה עוֹמֵד בֵּין הָאוּלָם וְלַמִּזְבֵּחַ, רֹאשׁוֹ לַדָּרוֹם וּפָנָיו לַמַּעֲרָב, וְהַכֹּהֵן עוֹמֵד בַּמִּזְרָח וּפָנָיו לַמַּעֲרָב, וְסוֹמֵךְ שְׁתֵּי יָדָיו עָלָיו וּמִתְוַדֶּה. וְכָךְ הָיָה אוֹמֵר, אָנָּא הַשֵּׁם, עָוִיתִי פָּשַׁעְתִּי חָטָאתִי לְפָנֶיךָ אֲנִי וּבֵיתִי. אָנָּא הַשֵּׁם, כַּפֶּר נָא לָעֲוֹנוֹת וְלַפְּשָׁעִים וְלַחֲטָאִים, שֶׁעָוִיתִי וְשֶׁפָּשַׁעְתִּי וְשֶׁחָטָאתִי לְפָנֶיךָ אֲנִי וּבֵיתִי, כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרַת משֶׁה עַבְדֶּךָ (ויקרא טז), כִּי בַיּוֹם הַזֶּה יְכַפֵּר עֲלֵיכֶם לְטַהֵר אֶתְכֶם מִכֹּל חַטֹּאתֵיכֶם לִפְנֵי יְיָ תִּטְהָרוּ. וְהֵן עוֹנִין אַחֲרָיו, בָּרוּךְ שֵׁם כְּבוֹד מַלְכוּתוֹ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד:
He came to his bull and his bull was standing between the Ulam [entrance hall] and the altar, its head to the south and its face [turned] to the west. And the priest stood on the east side facing the west. He laid both his hands upon it and confessed. And thus he would say: “Please, ‘Hashem’! I have done wrong, I have transgressed, I have sinned before You, I and my house. Please, ‘Hashem’! Forgive the wrongdoings, the transgressions, the sins which I have committed and transgressed and sinned before You, I and my house, as it is written in the Torah of Moses Your servant: 'For on this day shall atonement be made for you'," etc. [to cleanse you of all your sins; you shall be clean before the Lord] (Leviticus 16:30). And [when the people heard the four letter Name] they answer after him: “Blessed be the Name of His glorious Kingdom forever and ever”.
[ד] כיצד היה מתודה? אנא השם, עויתי פשעתי חטאתי לפניך, אני וביתי. אנא השם, כפר נא לעונות ולפשעים ולחטאים שעויתי ושפשעתי ושחטאתי לפניך אני וביתי ככתוב בתורת משה עבדך "כי ביום הזה יכפר עליהם לטהר אתכם מכל חטאתכם לפני ה' תטהרו". ואומר "והתודה עליו את כל עונות בני ישראל ואת כל פשעיהם לכל חטאתם", דברי ר' מאיר. וחכמים אומרים "עונות" – אלו הזדונות. "פשעיהם" – אלו המרדים. "חטאתם" – אלו השגגות. מאחר שהוא מתודה על הזדונות ועל המרדים חוזר ומתודה על השגגות?! אלא כך היה מתודה: אנא השם, חטאתי עויתי, פשעתי לפניך אני וביתי. אנא השם, כפר נא לחטאים ולעונות ולפשעים שחטאתי ושעויתי ושפשעתי לפניך אני וביתי ככתוב בתורת משה "כי ביום הזה יכפר עליכם לטהר אתכם".
4) (viz. Yoma 36b) How did he (the high-priest) confess? "Ana Hashem" ("I beseech You, O L rd") — "I have transgressed, I have offended, I have sinned before You — I and my house — Ana Hashem, atone, I beseech You, for the transgressions, and the offerings, and the sins that I have transgressed, and offended, and sinned before You — I and my house, as it is written in the Torah of Moses Your servant (Vayikra 16:30) 'For on this day He shall atone for you to cleanse you of all your sins; before the Lord you shall be clean.'" And thus (i.e., in this order) is it written (in respect to the scape-goat, (Ibid. 21) "And he shall confess over it all the transgressions of the children of Israel and all their offenses of all of their sins." These are the words of R. Meir. And the sages say: "Transgressions" — these are the deliberate sins. "their offenses" — these are (the sins of) rebellion. "their sins" — these are the unwitting sins. Now if he already confessed for deliberate sins and sins of rebellion, does he now go back and confess for unwitting sins! Rather, the formula for confession is: "Ana Hashem, I have sinned, I have transgressed, I have offended before You, I and my household. Ana Hashem, atone I beseech You, for the sins and the transgressions, and the offenses, that I have sinned, and transgressed, and offended before You, I and my household, as it is written in the Torah of Moses, Your servant 'For on this day He shall atone for you to cleanse you.'" And they answer after him: "Blessed be the name of the glory of His kingdom forever."
The order of confession is: chata'ti, `aviti, pasha`ti.
Chet' refers to unintended sin; `Avon refers to intentional sin; Pesha` refers to an act of rebellion.
