(ב) אֵלּוּ הֵן מַעֲמָדוֹת, לְפִי שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר כח), צַו אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם אֶת קָרְבָּנִי לַחְמִי, וְכִי הֵיאַךְ קָרְבָּנוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם קָרֵב, וְהוּא אֵינוֹ עוֹמֵד עַל גַּבָּיו, הִתְקִינוּ נְבִיאִים הָרִאשׁוֹנִים עֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבַּע מִשְׁמָרוֹת. עַל כָּל מִשְׁמָר וּמִשְׁמָר הָיָה מַעֲמָד בִּירוּשָׁלַיִם שֶׁל כֹּהֲנִים, שֶׁל לְוִיִּם, וְשֶׁל יִשְׂרְאֵלִים. הִגִּיעַ זְמַן הַמִּשְׁמָר לַעֲלוֹת, כֹּהֲנִים וּלְוִיִּם עוֹלִים לִירוּשָׁלַיִם, וְיִשְׂרָאֵל שֶׁבְּאוֹתוֹ מִשְׁמָר מִתְכַּנְּסִין לְעָרֵיהֶן וְקוֹרְאִין בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית:
These are the standing divisions; since it is written, "Command the children of Israel and say to them, [you shall watch] my offering of food" (Num. 28:2). But how can a person's offering be offered without that person standing near it? So the early prophets instituted twenty-four priestly watches, and for each and every priestly watch there was a [corresponding] standing division of priests, Levites, and Israelites in Jerusalem. When the time arrived for [each] priestly watch to go up, the priests and Levites would go up to Jerusalem, and the Israelites assigned to that watch would assemble in their towns and read the account of Creation.
דָּבָר אַחֵר, עַל אֵלֶּה אֲנִי בוֹכִיָּה ... רַבָּנָן אָמְרֵי עַל בִּטּוּל מִשְׁמָרוֹת, וּמָה הֲנָאָה יֵשׁ לָעוֹלָם מִן הַמִּשְׁמָרוֹת, אֶלָּא בַּשֵּׁנִי הָיוּ מִתְעַנִּין עַל פּוֹרְשֵׂי יַמִּים. בַּשְּׁלִישִׁי הָיוּ מִתְעַנִּין עַל הוֹלְכֵי דְרָכִים. בָּרְבִיעִי הָיוּ מִתְעַנִּין עַל הַתִּינוֹקוֹת שֶׁלֹא יַעֲלֶה אַסְכָּרָה בְּפִיהֶם וְיָמוּתוּ. בַּחֲמִישִׁי הָיוּ מִתְעַנִּין עַל הַמְעֻבָּרוֹת שֶׁלֹא יַפִּילוּ וְעַל הַמְּנִיקוֹת שֶׁלֹא יָמוּתוּ בְּנֵיהֶם. וַהֲלֹא אֵין מִתְעַנִּין עַל שְׁנֵי דְבָרִים כְּאֶחָד, כְּדִכְתִיב (עזרא ח, כג): וַנָּצוּמָה וַנְּבַקְּשָׁה מֵאֱלֹהֵינוּ עַל זֹאת. וְכָתוּב אֶחָד אוֹמֵר בְּדָנִיֵּאל (דניאל ב, יח): וְרַחֲמִין לְמִבְעֵא מִן קֳדָם אֱלָהּ שְׁמַיָא עַל רָזָא דְּנָה, וְלָא עַל תְּרֵין.
