Rav Seorim, Rava’s brother, sat before Rava, and he saw that Rava was dozing, i.e., about to die. Rava said to his brother: Master, tell him, the Angel of Death, not to torment me. Knowing that Rava was not afraid of the Angel of Death, Rav Seorim said to him: Master, are you not a friend of the Angel of Death? Rava said to him: Since my fate has been handed over to him, and it has been decreed that I shall die, the Angel of Death no longer pays heed to me. Rav Seorim said to Rava: Master, appear to me in a dream after your death. And Rava appeared to him. Rav Seorim said to Rava: Master, did you have pain in death? He said to him: Like the prick of the knife when letting blood. It was similarly related that Rava sat before Rav Naḥman, and he saw that Rav Naḥman was dozing, i.e., slipping into death. Rav Naḥman said to Rava: Master, tell the Angel of Death not to torment me. Rava said to him: Master, are you not an important person who is respected in Heaven? Rav Naḥman said to him: In the supernal world who is important? Who is honorable? Who is complete? Rava said to Rav Naḥman: Master, appear to me in a dream after your death. And he appeared to him. Rava said to him: Master, did you have pain in death? Rav Naḥman said to him: Like the removal of hair from milk, which is a most gentle process. But nevertheless, were the Holy One, Blessed be He, to say to me: Go back to that world, the physical world, as you were, I would not want to go, for the fear of the Angel of Death is great. And I would not want to go through such a terrifying experience a second time. The Gemara relates that Rabbi Elazar was once eating teruma, when the Angel of Death appeared to him. He said to the Angel of Death: I am eating teruma; is it not called sacred? It would be inappropriate for me to die now and thereby defile this sacred teruma. The Angel of Death accepted his argument and left him. The moment passed, and he lived for some time afterward. It was similarly related that the Angel of Death once appeared to Rav Sheshet in the marketplace. Rav Sheshet said to the Angel of Death: Shall I die in the market like an animal? Come to my house and kill me there like a human being. So too, the Angel of Death appeared to Rav Ashi in the marketplace. Rav Ashi said to the Angel of Death: Give me thirty days so that I may review my studies, for you say above: Fortunate is he who comes here to Heaven with his learning in his hand. On the thirtieth day the Angel of Death came to take him. Rav Ashi said to the Angel of Death: What is all of this? Why are you in such a hurry to take me? Why can you not postpone my death? He said to him: The foot of Rav Huna bar Natan is pushing you, as he is ready to succeed you as the leader of the generation, and one sovereignty does not overlap with its counterpart, even by one hairbreadth. Therefore, you cannot live any longer. The Angel of Death was unable to take Rav Ḥisda because his mouth was never silent from study. So the Angel of Death went and sat on the cedar column that supported the roof of the study hall of the Sages. The cedar cracked and Rav Ḥisda was silent for a moment, as he was startled by the sound. At that point the Angel of Death was able to take him. The Angel of Death could not come near Rabbi Ḥiyya, owing to his righteousness. One day the Angel of Death appeared to him as a poor person. He came and knocked on the door. He said to Rabbi Ḥiyya: Bring out bread for me, and he took out bread for him. The Angel of Death then said to Rabbi Ḥiyya: Master, do you not have mercy on a poor person? Why, then, do you not have mercy upon that man, i.e., upon me, and give me what I want? The Angel of Death then revealed his identity to him, and showed him a fiery rod in order to confirm that he was the Angel of Death. At this point Rav Ḥiyya surrendered himself to him.

כי הא דרב יוסף בריה דר' יהושע בן לוי חלש ואיתנגיד כי הדר אמר ליה אבוה מאי חזית אמר ליה עולם הפוך ראיתי עליונים למטה ותחתונים למעלה אמר לו בני עולם ברור ראית

This is like the incident involving Rav Yosef, son of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, who became ill and was about to expire. When he returned to good health, his father said to him: What did you see when you were about to die? He said to him: I saw an inverted world. Those above, i.e., those who are considered important in this world, were below, insignificant, while those below, i.e., those who are insignificant in this world, were above. He said to him: My son, you have seen a clear world. The world you have seen is the true world, as in that world people’s standings befit them.

מרגלא בפומיה דרב [לא כעולם הזה העולם הבא] העולם הבא אין בו לא אכילה ולא שתיה ולא פריה ורביה ולא משא ומתן ולא קנאה ולא שנאה ולא תחרות אלא צדיקים יושבין ועטרותיהם בראשיהם ונהנים מזיו השכינה שנאמר (שמות כד, יא) ויחזו את הא-להים ויאכלו וישתו:

Rav had a favorite saying: "The world-to-come is not at all like this world. In the world-to-come there is no eating, no drinking, no procreation, no commerce, no envy, no hatred, no rivalry; the righteous sit with their crowns on their heads and enjoy the radiance of the Shekhina (Divine Presence), as it is written (Ex. 24:11) 'And they saw G-d and they ate and drank.'" [Rashi: they were sustained by the splendor of the Shekhina; it was as if they ate and drank.]

אמר רבי יוחנן: כל מי שהוא יגע בתורה בעולם הזה, לעולם הבא אין מניחין אותו לישון, אלא מוליכין אותו לבית מדרשו של שם ושל עבר, ושל אברהם יצחק ויעקב ומשה ואהרן. עד היכן? עד, (שמואל ב' ז') ועשיתי לך שם גדול כשם הגדולים אשר בארץ.

Rabbi Yochanan said: Everyone who exerted oneself in Torah study in this world, in the world-to-come will not be set down to sleep, but rather will be led to the Beit Midrash of Shem and Eveir, and of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Moses, and Aaron. From where do we know this? From (II Samuel 7: 9) "...I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth."

גן עדן אמר ריש לקיש אם בארץ ישראל הוא בית שאן פתחו ואם בערביא בית גרם פתחו ואם בין הנהרות הוא דומסקנין פתחו בבבל אביי משתבח בפירי דמעבר ימינא רבא משתבח בפירי דהרפניא:

Reish Lakish said: If [the Garden of Eden] is in Eretz Yisrael, its entrance is Beit She’an, and if it is in Arabia, its entrance is Beit Garem, and if it is between the rivers of Babylonia, its entrance is Dumsekanin, for all these places feature a great abundance of vegetation and fertile land.

(י) אף הוא היה אומר חמשה דברים של שנים עשר חדש. משפט דור המבול, שנים עשר חדש. משפט איוב, שנים עשר חדש .משפט המצריים, שנים עשר חדש .משפט גוג ומגוג לעתיד לבוא, שנים עשר חדש. משפט רשעים בגיהנם, שנים עשר חדש, שנאמר (ישעיה סו) והיה מדי חדש בחדשו. רבי יוחנן בן נורי אומר, מן הפסח ועד העצרת, שנאמר ומדי שבת בשבתו.

[Rabbi Akiva] used to say that there are five things that [last] twelve months: The judgment of the generation of the flood, twelve months; The judgment of Job, twelve months; The judgment of the Egyptians, twelve months; The judgment of Gog and Magog in the time to come, twelve months; The judgment of the wicked in hell, twelve months, for it is said, "And it will be from [one] month until the [next appearance of the same] month" (Isaiah 66:23). Rabbi Yohanan the son of Nuri says: From Passover to Atzeret, for it is said, "And from one sabbath until the [next] Sabbath."

Yerushalmi, Sota 9:16, Rabbi Eliezer, [Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai’s] student, commanded at the time of his own death, “Clear the courtyard on account of the impurity and prepare a seat for Rabbi Yochanan be Zakkai.” There are those that say that he saw what his master saw.

Kesuvos, 104a, When a righteous man departs from this world…G-d says, ‘Let the righteous men, the departed tzadikim, come from their resting places to go forth to meet him’.

Zohar, Ha’azinu 288a, When Ya’akov departed, Avraham and Yitzchak came to receive him. Avraham stood to his right, and Yitzchak to his left. Ya’akov was between them and the Shechina was in front of him.

Zohar, Idra Zuta, 288a, When R Shimon bar Yochai departed from the world, Rav Hamnuna Saba, Seventy Tzadikim and R Pinchas ben Yair came to greet him.

Zohar, VaYechi 217a, When a man’s soul departs, all his relatives and friends in the world of Truth accompany his soul and show it the place of delight and place of punishment. If he is righteous, he sees his place, and goes up to sit and take delight in the upper Eden of that world.

Rabbi Shimon lifted up his eyes and saw the Angel of Death running and dancing before Rabbi Yitzchak. Rabbi Shimon stood up, held Rabbi Yitzchak by the hand and said: I decree that whoever is used to come to me shall enter, and he who is not used to shall not come. Rabbi Yitzchak and Rabbi Yehuda came in. And he thus kept the Angel of Death remaining outside…

Rabbi Shimon said to Rabbi Yitzchak, Have you seen your father’s image today, or have you not? For we have learned that when a man departs from the world, his father and relatives are there with him, and he sees and recognizes them. And all those with whom he will dwell in the other world in the same chamber, all gather to be with him, and accompany his soul to its dwelling place.

Rabbi Yitzchak said: Until now I have not seen my father. Rabbi Shimon stood up and said: Master of the universe, we have a certain Rabbi Yitzchak with us, one of the seven eyes here; Behold, I hold him, give Him to me! A voice resounded saying…Behold, Rabbi Yitzchak is yours, and you shall come with him when you shall sit in your throne at the time you depart from the world.

Zohar, Chayei Sarah, But Avraham looked at Adam, saw his shape, and lived. He saw a light shining from within the cave and a candle burning. Then he wanted to dwell in that cave, and his heart and desire were always there. Man sees Adam when he dies and passes from the world.

Vayechi, 250b, Come and behold: When Ya’akov entered the cave, all the perfumes of the Garden of Eden filled it. The cave was alight, for a candle burned there. When the patriarchs came to Ya’akov in Egypt to be with him, the candlelight was gone from the cave. When Ya’akov came into the cave, the candle returned…The souls of the righteous pass before the fathers inside the cave, so that they will awake and behold the seed they left in the world, and rejoice before the Holy One, blessed be He

Zohar, Lech Lecha 81a, When the soul leaves this world, it enters the cave of Machpelah, where the opening leading to the Garden of Eden is located. Then it meets Adam and the Patriarchs who are there. If the soul is meritorious, they rejoice with it and open all the openings so the soul can enter Gan Eden. If not, it is pushed outside.

Zohar, Tosefes 303b, All humankind, righteous and wicked, pass through the air and behold Adam before going each soul to its own place, for good or for bad.
