משנה: בַּפֶּסַח קוֹרִין בְּפָרָשַׁת מוֹעֲדוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹרַת כֹּהֲנִים. בָּעֲצֶרֶת שִׁבְעָה שָׁבוּעוֹת. בְּרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה בַּחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי. בְּיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים אַחֲרֵי מוֹת. בְּיוֹם טוֹב הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁל חָג קוֹרִין בְּפָרָשַׁת מוֹעֲדוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹרַת כֹּהֲנִים וּשְׁאָר כָּל־יְמוֹת הֶחָג קוֹרִין בְּקָרְבְּנוֹת הֶחָג׃ MISHNAH: On Passover one reads the section about holidays in Leviticus¹¹²Leviticus.23.1-44">Lev. 23:1–44.. הלכה: וּבָעֲצֶרֶת שִׁבְעָה שָׁבוּעוֹת. אִית תַּנָּיֵי תַנֵּי. בַּחוֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י. וּבְרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה וּבַחוֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי. אִית תַּנָּיֵי תַנֵּי. וַֽי֨י פָּקַ֥ד אֶת־שָׂרָ֖ה. בְּיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים אַחֲרֵי מוֹת. וּבְיוֹם טוֹב הָרִאשׁוֹן שֶׁל חָג קוֹרִין בְּפָרָשַׁת מוֹעֲדוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹרַת כֹּהֲנִים וּשְׁאָר כָּל־יְמוֹת הֶחָג קוֹרִין בְּקָרְבְּנוֹת הֶחָג׃ רִבִּי יַעֲקֹב בַּר אָחָא בְשֵׁם רִבִּי יָסָא. לְלַמְּדָךְ שֶׁאֵין הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד אֶלָּא עַל הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת. HALAKHAH: “On Pentecost, seven weeks.” There are Tannaim who state, in the third month¹¹⁷Ex. Chapters 19–20. While Pharisaic and Sadducee traditions differ about the date of Pentecost, both are in agreement that the holiday celebrates the anniversary of the theophany of Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments, the theme of these Chapters. Tosephta 3:5. “And on New Year’s Day, and in the Seventh month¹¹⁸In this version the reading is Numbers.29.1-5">Num. 29:1–5..” There are Tannaim who state, and the Eternal counted Sarah¹¹⁹Genesis.21">Gen. Chapter 21. The reading is appropriate because Genesis.21.17">v. 21:17 states that a person is judged only by his state at the moment of judgment; if he is repentant then his prior misdeeds are disregarded; a proper reading for the Day of Judgment. On the first day of Tabernacles one reads the section about holidays in Leviticus; on the remaining days about the sacrifices of the holiday.” Rebbi Jacob bar Aḥa in the name of Rebbi Yasa, to teach you that the world only exists by the sacrifices.

תַּמָּן תַּנִּינָן. שִׁמְעוֹן הַצַּדִּיק הָיָה מִשְּׁיֵרֵי כְנֶסֶת הַגְּדוֹלָה. הוּא הָיָה אוֹמֵר. עַל שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד. עַל הַתּוֹרָה וְעַל הָעֲבוֹדָה וְעַל גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים׃ וּשְׁלָשְׁתָּן בְּפָסוּק אֶחָד. וָֽאָשִׂ֤ים דְּבָרַיי בְּפִ֔יךָ. זְה תַלְמוּד תּוֹרָה. וּבְצֵ֥ל יָדִ֖י כִּיסִּיתִיךָ. זוֹ גְמִילּוּת חֲסָדִים. לְלַמְּדָךְ שֶׁכָּל־מִי שֶׁהוּא עוֹסֵק בַּתּוֹרָה וּבִגְמִילּוּת חֲסָדִים זוֹכֶה לֵישֵׁב בְּצִילּוֹ שֶׁלְהַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא. הָדָא הִיא דִכְתִיב מַה־יָּקָ֥ר חַסְדְּךָ֗ אֱ֫לֹהִ֥ים וּבְנֵ֥י אָדָ֑ם בְּצֵ֥ל כְּ֝נָפֶ֗יךָ יֶחֱסָיֽוּן׃ לִנְטוֹעַ שָׁמַ֨יִם֙ וְלִיסוֹד אָ֔רֶץ. אֵילּוּ הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת. וְלֵאמֹ֥ר לְצִיּ֖וֹן עַמִּי־אָֽתָּה׃. אָמַר רִבִּי חִינְנָא בַּר פָּפָּא. חִיזַּרְנוּ עַל כָּל־הַמִּקְרָא וְלָא מָצָאנוּ שֶׁנִּקְרְאוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל צִיּוֹן אֶלָּא זֶה. וְלֵאמֹ֥ר לְצִיּ֖וֹן עַמִּי־אָֽתָּה׃ תַּמָּן תַּנִּינָן. רַבָּן שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן גַּמְלִיאֵל אוֹמֵר. עַל שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד. עַל הַדִּין וְעַל הָאֱמֶת וְעַל הַשָּׁלוֹם. וּשְׁלָשְׁתָּן דָּבָר אֶחָד הֵן. נַעֲשֶׂה הַדִּין נַעֲשֶׂה אֱמֶת. נַעֲשֶׂה אֱמֶת נַעֲשֶׂה הַשָּׁלוֹם. אָמַר רִבִּי מָנָא. וּשְׁלָשְׁתָּן בְּפָסוּק אֶחָד. אֱמֶת וּמִשְׁפַּט שָׁלוֹם שִׁפְטוּ בְּשַׁעֲרֵיכֶם׃ ¹²⁰From Ta`aniot 4:2, Notes 134–139. There, we stated: “Simeon the Just was of the remainders of the Great Assembly. He used to say, the world continues to exist by three things, by the Torah, by worship, and by labors of love” All three are in one verse: I shall put My word in your mouth, that is Torah. By the shadow of My hands I shall cover you, these are labors of love; to teach you that he who is occupied with Torah and labors of love merits to dwell in the shadow of the Holy One, praise to Him. That is what is written, how precious is Your grace, o God, and humans take shelter in Your wings’ shadow. To plant the Heavens and give foundation to the earth, these are the sacrifices, and to say to Zion, you are My people. Rebbi Ḥinena bar Pappa said, we went over all of Scripture and only found this one that Israel was called Zion, and to say to Zion, you are My people. There, we stated: “Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel says, the world is existing on three things, on justice, on truth, and on peace. All three are one: If justice is done, truth is accomplished. If truth is accomplished, peace is established. Rebbi Mana said, and all are in one verse, judge truth and law of peace in your gates.
