Rabban Shimon b. Gamliel succeeded his father, Rabban Gamliel, as the Nasi into the time of the Judean Wars and up to the Temple's destruction. He continued the liberalization of Jewish law due to the increasing difficulties of the times. This included actions aimed at reducing financial burdens, such as setting an example by be buried in simple shrouds.

The Gemara raises an objection from a baraita: There was an incident involving Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel, who was on a step on the Temple mount, and he saw a certain gentile woman who was exceptionally beautiful and said: “How great are Your works, O Lord!” (Psalms 104:24). And Rabbi Akiva too, when he saw the wife of the wicked Turnus Rufus he spat, laughed, and cried. He spat, as she was created from a putrid drop; he laughed, as he foresaw that she was destined to convert and he would marry her…

Avodah Zarah 20a:10

There was an incident where the price of nests, i.e., pairs of birds, stood in Jerusalem at one gold dinar, as the great demand for birds for the offerings of a woman after childbirth and a zava led to an increase in the price. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel said: I swear by this abode of the Divine Presence that I will not lie down tonight until the price of nests will be in silver dinars. I understood from this three things: That it was certain, could become impure, and he did not have another one. That it was certain, because the fruits of Caesarea are certain. The sword comes into the world because of the delay and perversion of justice, and because of those who teach the Torah contrary to the Halakhah.
