Take the blasphemer outside the camp; and let all who were within hearing lay their hands upon his head, and let the community leadership stone him.
Leviticus 24:14
Moses spoke thus to the Israelites. And they took the blasphemer outside the camp and pelted him with stones. The Israelites did as יהוה had commanded Moses.
Leviticus 24:23
(Bamidbar 15:34) "And they placed him in ward": We are hereby apprised that all who are liable to krithuth ("cutting off") are put in ward (pending judgment). "for it was not made clear what should be done with him": But is it not written (Shemot 31:14) "He who profanes it shall be put to death"? What, then, is the intent of "For it was not made clear"? He did not know with what specific type of death until it was told to Him by the Holy One. (Ibid. 35) "And the L-rd said to Moses: Die, shall die the man": (i.e…
Sifrei Bamidbar 114:1
Then יהוה said to Moses, “The party in question shall be put to death: the community leadership shall pelt him with stones outside the camp.”
Numbers 15:35
without being touched—by being either stoned or shot; beast or person, a trespasser shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up on the mountain.”
Exodus 19:13
10) (Vayikra 24:23) ("And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and they took the curser outside the camp, and they stoned him with a stone; and the children of Israel did as the L–rd commanded Moses.") "And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and they took the curser outside the camp. As mentioned earlier (Chapter 19:1), we are hereby taught that beth-din was within, and beth-din, outside of it. "and they stoned him," and not his garment (viz. Chapter 19:3). "a stone": We are hereby taught that if he died with one stone, it is sufficient…
Sifra, Emor, Chapter 20 10
1) (Vayikra 24:13-14) ("And the L–rd spoke to Moses, saying: Take the curser outside of the camp, and let all who heard place their hands on his head; and let all the congregation stone him.") "Take the curser outside of the camp": We are hereby taught that beth-din was within, and the stoning site outside of it. "and let "who heard": These are the witnesses. "all who heard": These are the judges. "their hands": the hands of each, individually. 2) "their hands on his head": They place their hands upon him and say to him: "Your blood is on your head for you brought yourself to this."…
Sifra, Emor, Chapter 19 1-3
MISHNA:
When
the trial has ended
in a guilty verdict and the condemned man has been sentenced to be stoned,
he is taken out to be stoned. The place of stoning was outside the court
and a little beyond it,
as it is stated
with regard to a blasphemer:
“Take out him who has cursed
to outside the camp, and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him” (Leviticus 24:14).

Sanhedrin 42b:1-43a:10
4) "he shall die": at the hands of beth-din. Whence is it derived that if beth-din lack the power to do so, the people of the land may assist them"? From "the people of the land shall stone him." Variantly: "the people of the land" — the people for whose sake the land was created. R. Gamliel says: the people who are destined to inherit the land by carrying out those things. "shall stone him" — unclad. "with a stone": If he dies through one stone, it sufficed.
Sifra, Kedoshim, Section 4 4
MISHNA:
These
transgressors
are those who are stoned
to death:
One who engages in intercourse with
his
mother; or with
his
father’s wife,
even if she is not his mother;
or with
his
daughter-in-law; or with a male; or with an animal; and a woman who engages in intercourse with an animal. And one who blasphemes, and one who engages in idol worship. And one who gives of his offspring to Molekh, and a necromancer, and a sorcerer. And one who desecrates Shabbat, and one who curses his father or his mother…
Sanhedrin 53a:14
MISHNA:
One does not execute
the rebellious elder,
neither in the court that is in his city, nor in the court that is in Yavne,
although that was the seat of the Sanhedrin after the destruction of the Second Temple.
Rather, one takes him up to the High Court in Jerusalem. And they guard him
in incarceration
until the pilgrimage Festival, and
the court
executes him during the pilgrimage Festival, as it is stated: “And all the nation shall hear, and fear, and no longer sin intentionally”
(Deuteronomy 17:13)…
Sanhedrin 89a:3
ולא יסקלונו?, a question. Stoning was considered as something despicable, a demeaning treatment of people, as we know from Samuel II 16,13 where Shimi ben Gerah cursed David and threw stones at him.
Rashbam on Exodus 8:22:2
MISHNA:
The corpses of all those
who are stoned are hung
after their death; this is
the statement of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Rabbis say: Only
the corpse of
the blasphemer,
who has cursed God,
and
the corpse of
the idol worshipper are hung.
The corpse of
a man is hung facing the people, but
the corpse of
a woman,
out of modesty, is hung
facing the tree;
this is
the statement of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Rabbis say:
the corpse of
a man is hung, but
the corpse of
a woman is not hung…
Sanhedrin 45b:20-21
§ The mishna states the types of the death penalty in descending order of severity:
Stoning, burning,
killing by decapitation, and strangulation. The Gemara discusses the basis for this order.
Stoning
is considered more
severe than burning, as
stoning
is meted out to one who blasphemes,
i.e., one who curses God,
and to one who worships idols.
For
what
reason is the
severity
of these transgressions considered greater than others?
Because
the transgressor
undermines the fundamental
tenets of Judaism.
