ד"א לך לך, אמר ר' לוי מהו לך לך, א"ל הקב"ה אתה עושה למאה שנה בן, שנאמר לך לך, Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO. R. Levi said: What is the meaning of GO (LK LK)? The Holy One said to him: At age one hundred you will produce a son. It is so stated < in the words > LK LK: L = thirty; K = twenty. < LK appears > two times, LK LK. Ergo, one hundred.

ר' יהושע בן לוי אמר טרוף לך חיותא בעולם הזה, אבל לעולם הבא שכרך מתוקן לך. Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO (LK LK). R. Joshua ben Levi said: Throw away your (LK) life in this world, but in the world to come your reward is prepared for you (LK).

ד"א לך לך, ר' לוי בן חמא [אמר] אמר לו הקב"ה (לא) נסיון הראשון ונסיון האחרון איני מנסה אותך אלא בלך לך, לך לך מארצך (בראשית יב א), ולך לך אל ארץ המוריה (שם כב ב). Another interpretation: GO. R. Levi ben Hama [said]: The Holy One said to him: For < your > first testing and < your > last testing I am only testing you with GO (LK LK).¹²Below, 4:46; M. Pss. 18:25; cf. ARN, A, 33; PRE 26. (Thus Gen. 12:1 reads:) GO (LK LK) FROM YOUR < NATIVE > LAND; (and Gen. 22:2 reads): < PLEASE TAKE YOUR SON > … AND GO (LK LK) TO THE LAND OF MORIAH.

ד"א לך לך, אמר לו הקב"ה לך הייתי משחר, דאמר ר' יהושע בן קרחה אמר דוד עמך נדבות ביום חילך וגו' טל ילדותך (תהלים קי ג), אמר לו הקב"ה עמך הייתי ביום שזיינתה חיילותיך, מהו טל ילדותך, אמר ר' אחא אמר ר' חנינא בן שלש שנים הכיר אברהם את בוראו, מנין שנאמר עקב אשר שמע אברהם בקולי (בראשית כו ה) עקב בגימטריא קע"ב, וכל ימיו של אברהם קע"ה, מכאן אתה למד שבן ג' שנים הכיר אברהם את בוראו, א"ל הקב"ה כל מעשים רעים שעשית באותן שלש שנים, אני עושה אותן כטל זה, הוי טל ילדותך. Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO (LK LK). The Holy One said to him: I sought (rt.: ShHR) you (LK) early. Thus R. Joshua ben Qorhah said: David said (in Ps. 110:3): YOUR PEOPLE ('MK) OFFER THEMSELVES WILLINGLY IN THE DAY OF YOUR WARFARE (rt.: HYL)… < FROM THE WOMB OF THE DAWN (rt.: SHHR). > YOURS (LK) IS THE DEW OF YOUR YOUTH.¹³Cf. Gen. R. 39:8. The Holy One said to him: I was with you ('MK) on the day that you armed your forces (rt.: HYL). What is the meaning of THE DEW OF YOUR YOUTH? R. Aha said: R. Hanina said: At the age of three years Abraham recognized his Creator.¹⁴See Gen. R. 30:8; 46:2; 64:8; 95:3; Cant. R. 5:16:1; PR 21:12; below, 5:6. Where is it shown? Where it is stated (in Gen. 26:5): BECAUSE ('QB) ABRAHAM HEEDED MY VOICE. By gematria¹⁵Gk.: geometria or grammateis. Gematria is an exegetical method in which an interpretation is reached from the sum of the numerical value of the letters in a word. 'QB = 172 < years >, and all the days of Abraham are 175 < years >. Hence¹⁶By understanding Gen. 26:5 to mean: 172 YEARS ABRAHAM HEEDED MY VOICE. you learn that at the age of three years Abraham knew his Creator. The Holy One said to him: I am making all the evil deeds which you did in those three years like this dew. Ergo (in Ps. 110:3): THE DEW OF YOUR YOUTH.

ד"א לך לך בשבילך בראתי את העולם, אמר ר' תחליפא אמר הקב"ה בך הבטתי ובראתי את העולם, שנאמר אלה תולדות השמים והארץ בהבראם (בראשית ב ד), מהו בהבראם, באברהם בראם. Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO. For your sake I created the world. R. Tahalifa said: The Holy One said: I looked at you when I created the world. Thus it is stated (in Gen. 2:4): THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH WHEN THEY WERE CREATED. What is the meaning of WHEN THEY WERE CREATED (BHBR'M)? In Abraham (B'BRHM) he created them.

ד"א לך לך אל הארץ אשר אראך, נסין בתוך נסיון שלא אמר לו לאיזה מקום לילך, אלא אל הארץ אשר אראך. Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO < … > UNTO THE LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU. < Here is > a testing within a testing, since he did not tell him which place to go to. < He > merely < said >: UNTO THE LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU.

ד"א אל הארץ אשר אראך, אמר ר' ברכיה הכהן ברבי [זש"ה אשכילך ואורך בדרך זו תלך] (תהלים לב ח), שאני אשכילך, מהו אשכילך, אתן בך חכמה, שנאמר למען תשכיל (יהושע א ז), ואורך, שאני מאיר עיניך. Another interpretation (of Gen. 12:1): GO < … > UNTO THE LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU. R. Berekhyah the Priest Berabbi said: [This text is related (to Ps. 32:8): LET ME INSTRUCT YOU AND TEACH YOU IN THE WAY IN WHICH YOU SHALL GO.] So shall I instruct you. What is the meaning of LET ME INSTRUCT (askil) YOU? Let me place wisdom within you, as stated (in Josh. 1:7): SO THAT YOU MAY BE SUCCESSFUL (taskil). (Ps. 32:8:) AND TEACH YOU ('WR), in the sense that I am enlightening (rt.: 'WR) your eyes.

ד"א ואורך. שאני קושטך לדרך טובה, בדרך זו תלך איעצה עליך עיני (תהלים שם). Another interpretation (of Ps. 32:8): AND TEACH YOU. < The words mean > that I am guiding you onto a good way. (Ps. 32:8, end:) IN THE WAY IN WHICH YOU SHALL GO, LET ME GIVE COUNSEL WITH MY EYES UPON YOU.

ד"א אשכילך ואורך, מהו ואורך, אל הארץ אשר אראך, א"ל אברהם אין אתה מפסיד, ואעשך לגוי גדול (בראשית יב ב), ואשימך אין כתיב כאן, אלא ואעשך, שאני בורא אותך בריה חדשה, כמה שנאמר ויעש אלהים את הרקיע (בראשית א ז), ויעש אלהים את שני המאורות (שם שם טז), אמר ר' (מנחם) [פנחס הכהן] בר חמא אימתי עשה הקב"ה [את] אברהם לגוי גדול, כשיצאו ישראל ממצרים, ובאו לסיני וקבלו את התורה, והביט בהן משה, ואמר הרי הן עשויין כמה שהבטיח הקב"ה לזקן, שנאמר ומי גוי גדול (דברים ד ח). Another interpretation (of Ps. 32:8): LET ME INSTRUCT YOU AND TEACH YOU. What is the meaning of AND TEACH YOU? < AND TEACH YOU THE WAY TO GO >, (according to Gen. 12:1) UNTO THE LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU. He said to Abraham: You are not losing out. FOR (according to vs. 2) I WILL MAKE YOU INTO A GREAT NATION.¹⁷Gen. R. 39:11; Numb. R. 11:2. "For I will establish you" is not written here but FOR I WILL MAKE YOU, because I creating you as a new creature. In the same sense it is stated (in Gen. 1:7): AND GOD MADE THE FIRMAMENT. < Similarly > (in vs. 16): AND GOD MADE THE TWO < GREAT > LIGHTS. R. {Minhas} [Pinhas] bar Hama [the Priest] said: When did the Holy One make Abraham a great nation? When Israel had left Egypt, come to Sinai, and received the Torah, Moses looked at them and said: Behold, they have been made just as the Holy One had promised to the patriarch. Thus it is stated (in Deut. 4:8): AND WHAT GREAT NATION….
