מה כתיב למעלה מן הענין, וישמע אברם כי נשבה אחיו (בראשית יד יד), וכי אחיו של לוט היה, אלא ראה ענותנותו של אברהם אבינו, אחר כל המריבה שעשו עמו, [שנאמר ויהי ריב בין רועי מקנה אברם ובין רועי מקנה לוט (שם יג ז)], לא זכר אברהם אבינו את המריבה, אלא קראו אחיו, שנאמר כי אנשים אחים אנחנו (בראשית יג ח). What is written above on the matter (in Gen. 14:14)?⁷²Tanh., Gen. 3:13. WHEN ABRAM HEARD THAT HIS BROTHER HAD BEEN CAPTURED. Was he Lot's brother? Look, however, at the humility of our father Abraham after all the strife they had had with him, [as stated (in Gen. 13:7): NOW THERE WAS QUARRELING BETWEEN THE HERDSMEN OF ABRAM'S CATTLE AND THE HERDSMEN OF LOT'S CATTLE.] Our father Abraham did not remember the strife but called him his brother, as stated (in Gen. 13:8): FOR WE ARE BROTHERS.

[וירק את חניכיו], (שם יד יד) מהו וירק את חניכיו, שנטל כסף וזהב וחפה אותן בו, אמר להם אתם יודעים, שאנו יוצאים למלחמה, ולהציל נפשות אנו הולכים, אל תתנו עיניכם בממון, אם בשביל כסף וזהב הרי בפניכם, שנאמר וירק את חניכיו, אין וירק אל שחיפה אותן בכסף וזהב, שנאמר כנפי יונה נחפה בסף ואברותיה בירקרק חרוץ (תהלים סח יד). (Gen. 14:14, cont.:) HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN. What is the meaning of HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN? That he took silver and gold and covered them with it.⁷³Cf. Ned. 32a; Gen. R. 43:2. He said to them: You know that we are going off to war and that we are going in order to save lives. Do not set your eyes on wealth. If < you are going > for the sake of silver and gold, here it is before you, as stated (ibid.): HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN. HE ARMED (YRQ) < means > nothing but that he covered them with silver and gold, as stated (in Ps. 68:14 [13]): THE WINGS OF A DOVE ARE COVERED WITH SILVER AND ITS PINIONS WITH THE YELLOW (YRQRQ) OF GOLD.

ד"א וירק את חניכיו, אין וירק אלא שהוריקן בדברים, כמו שכתוב בתורה מי האיש הירא ורך הלבב (דברים כ ח), כך עשה אברהם, אמר להם למלחמה אנו יוצאין, מי שיש בידו עבירות, וירא ממעשיו, אל יצא עמנו, כששמעו כך כל מי שהיה יודע בלבו שחטא היה מתירא ולא היה יוצא וחזרו להם, ולא נשאר עמו כי אם אליעזר בלבד, באותה שעה אמר הקב"ה, הניחו אותך הכל, ולא נשאר עמך כי אם אליעזר בלבד, חייך שאני נותן בו כח של שלש מאות ושמונה עשר, שנאמר וירק את חניכיו ילידי ביתו שמונה עשר ושלש מאות, מנין ספור אליעזר בגימטריא שלש מאות ושמונה עשר. Another interpretation (of Gen. 14:14): HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN. HE ARMED (yareq) means nothing but that he made them turn pale (horiq) with words, just as it is written in the Law (in Deut. 20:8): WHO IS THE ONE WHO IS AFRAID (yare) AND FAINT (rakh) OF HEART. Abraham did this: He said to them: We are going off to war. Let anyone who has transgressions on his hand and is afraid because of his actions not go off with us. When they heard that, anyone who knew in his heart that he had sinned was afraid and did not go off. So they went back, and no one was left with him (Abraham) but Eliezer alone.⁷⁴Gen. R. 44:9; Numb. R. 18:21; PRE 27; M. Pss. 110:4. In that hour the Holy One said: All have forsaken you, and no one is left except Eliezer alone. By your life I am putting within him the power of three hundred and eighteen.⁷⁵Cf. Targum Pseudo-Jonathan to Gen. 14:14. Thus it is stated (in Gen. 14:14) AND HE ARMED HIS TRAINED MEN, THE ONES BORN IN HIS HOUSE, THREE HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN < OF THEM >. Where is it shown? The numerical value of Eliezer by gematria is three hundred and eighteen.
