אֲדֹנָי, שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח My Master, open my lips,

וּפִי יַגִּיד תְּהִלָּתֶֽךָ: and my mouth will declare Your praise.

אבות THE VIRTUE OF OUR FOREFATHERS

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy,

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ our God, and God of our fathers,

אֱלֹהֵי אַבְרָהָם אֱלֹהֵי יִצְחָק God of Avraham, God of Yitzchak,

וֵאלֹהֵי יַעֲקֹב and God of Yaakov,

הָאֵל the Almighty,

הַגָּדוֹל הַגִּבּוֹר וְהַנּוֹרָא the Great, the Powerful, the Awesome,

אֵל עֶלְיוֹן most high Almighty,

גּוֹמֵל חֲסָדִים טוֹבִים Who bestows beneficent kindness,

וְקוֹנֵה הַכֹּל Who possesses everything,

וְזוֹכֵר חַסְדֵי אָבוֹת Who remembers the piety of the Patriarchs,

וּמֵבִיא גוֹאֵל and Who brings a redeemer

לִבְנֵי בְנֵיהֶם to their children’s children,

לְמַֽעַן שְׁמוֹ בְּאַהֲבָה: for the sake of His Name, with love.

מִסּוֹד Invoking the doctrines

חֲכָמִים וּנְבוֹנִים. of our wise and understanding Sages,

וּמִלֶּֽמֶד and with the teachings [acquired]

דַּֽעַת מְבִינִים. from their perceptive intuition,

אֶפְתְּחָה פִי בִּתְפִלָּה וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים. I open my mouth in prayer and supplication

לְחַלּוֹת וּלְחַנֵּן to plead and seek favor

פְּנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ before the presence of the King,

מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים the King of kings—

וַאֲדוֹנֵי הָאֲדוֹנִים: the Master of masters.

אָתִֽיתִי לְחַנְּנָךְ I come to seek Your favor,

בְּלֵב קָרֽוּעַ וּמֻרְתָּח. with a torn and turbulent heart,

בַּקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים to plead for compassion,

כְּעָנִי בַפֶּֽתַח. like a poor man at the door;

גַּלְגֵּל רַחֲמֶֽיךָ may Your mercy prevail

וְדִין אַל תִּמְתַּח. and not strict justice,

אֲדֹנָי, שְׂפָתַי תִּפְתָּח: My Master, open my lips.

דָּבָר אֵין בְּפִי No speech is in my mouth,

וּבִלְשׁוֹנִי מִלָּה. and on my tongue no word,

הֵן יְהֹוָה יָדַֽעְתָּ כֻלָּהּ. yet, Adonoy, You know all [I wish to say.]

וּמִמַּעֲמַקֵּי הַלֵּב From the depth of [my] heart,

לְפָנֶֽיךָ אוֹחִֽילָה. Your Presence, I yearn;

אֶחֱסֶה let me take refuge,

בְסֵֽתֶר כְּנָפֶֽיךָ סֶֽלָה: in the shelter of Your wings, forever.

זַלְעָפָה וּפַלָּצוּת Amid terror and trembling,

אֲחָזֽוּנִי בְמוֹרָא. I am gripped with fear,

חַלּוֹת פְּנֵי נוֹרָא I plead before His awesome Presence

בְּנֶֽפֶשׁ יְקָרָה. with a heavy [heart and] soul.

טוּב טַעַם וָדַעַת In good thought and knowledge,

קָטֹנְתִּי לְחַסְּרָה: I am poor and wanting,

עַל כֵּן זָחַלְתִּי וָאִירָא: therefore, I cringe and I am in fear.

יָגַעְתִּי בְאַנְחָתִי I am worn out with my sighing,

אֵיךְ לַעֲמוֹד לְפָנֶיךָ. how am I to stand before You?

כִּי אֵין מַעֲשִׂים For I have no good deeds,

לְזַכּוֹת בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ. to gain merit in Your eyes;

לְחַלּוֹתְךָ [yet] to plead before You,

שְׁלָחֽוּנִי מַקְהֲלוֹת I have been sent by the congregations

הֲמוֹנֶֽךָ. of Your people;

תָּכִין לִבָּם guide their heart,

תַּקְשִׁיב אָזְנֶֽךָ: let Your ears be attentive [to their prayer].

מָה אֲנִי וּמֶה חַיַּי What am I, and what is my life?

תּוֹלֵעָה וְרִמָּה. [I am like] a worm, an insect;

נִבְעַר מִדַּֽעַת wanting in knowledge,

וּבְאֶֽפֶס מְזִמָּה. and void of understanding,

סָמַֽכְתִּי יְתֵדוֹתַי בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחָכְמָה. I rely on [a phrase in] the Book of Wisdom:

מַעֲנֶה רַךְ יָשִׁיב חֵמָה: “Meekness of speech turns away wrath.”

עֻזִּי You are my strength,

אֵלֶֽיךָ אֶשְׁמְרָה לְסַעֲדִי. I wait for You to uphold me,

פֵּֽתַח דְּבָרֶֽיךָ הָאֵר let Your opening words give light,

לְהַגִּידִי. that I may declare [my petition];

צַדְּקֵֽנִי וְאַמְּצֵֽנִי make my cause righteous and strengthen me,

וְתֵן לְאֵל יָדִי. and give me the power [of prayer],

כִּי אַתָּה מִשְׂגַּבִּי for You are my stronghold,

אֱלֹהֵי חַסְדִּי: the God of my kindness.

קְהָלֶֽיךָ עוֹמְדִים Your congregations stand

לְבַקֵּשׁ מְחִילָתֶֽךָ. to seek Your forgiveness,

רַחֲמֶיךָ יִכְמְרוּ may Your mercy be aroused,

לְרַחֲמָם בְּחֶמְלָתֶֽךָ. to have compassion on them, with Your pity;

שׁוֹפְכִים לֵב כַּמַּֽיִם they pour out their hearts like water,

לְעֻמָּתֶֽךָ. unto You,

וְאַתָּה תִשְׁמַע הַשָּׁמַֽיִם and [You] hear them in the heavens,

מְכוֹן שִׁבְתֶּֽךָ: Your dwelling place.

תְּחַזֵּק לְעַמְּךָ Strengthen Your people,

יָדָם הָרָפָה. their hands [are now] so weakened,

שְׁלַח מֵאִתְּךָ עֵֽזֶר וּתְרוּפָה. send them from Yourself, help and healing;

נוֹאֲמֶֽיךָ יַשִּׂיגוּ through Your word,¹This refers to the words of Hashem, as revealed through His prophets. they will attain

לְחַזֵּק וּלְתָקְפָה. strength and might,

כָּל אִמְרַת אֱלֽוֹהַּ צְרוּפָה: all the words of God are pure and certain.

The Ark is closed

זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים Remember us for life

מֶֽלֶךְ חָפֵץ בַּחַיִּים King, Who desires life;

וְכָתְבֵֽנוּ בְּסֵֽפֶר הַחַיִּים and inscribe us in the Book of Life,

לְמַעַנְךָ אֱלֹהִים חַיִּים: for Your sake, Living God.

מֶֽלֶךְ עוֹזֵר וּמוֹשִֽׁיעַ וּמָגֵן: King, Helper, and Deliverer and Shield.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy,

מָגֵן אַבְרָהָם: Shield of Avraham.

גבורות DIVINE MIGHT

אַתָּה גִבּוֹר לְעוֹלָם אֲדֹנָי You are mighty forever, my Master;

מְחַיֶּה מֵתִים אַתָּה You are the Resurrector of the dead

רַב לְהוֹשִֽׁיעַ: the Powerful One to deliver us.

מְכַלְכֵּל חַיִּים בְּחֶֽסֶד Sustainer of the living with kindliness,

מְחַיֵּה מֵתִים בְּרַחֲמִים רַבִּים Resurrector of the dead with great mercy,

סוֹמֵךְ נוֹפְלִים Supporter of the fallen,

וְרוֹפֵא חוֹלִים and Healer of the sick,

וּמַתִּיר אֲסוּרִים and Releaser of the imprisoned,

וּמְקַיֵּם אֱמוּנָתוֹ and Fulfiller of His faithfulness

לִישֵׁנֵי עָפָר, to those who sleep in the dust.

מִי כָמֽוֹךָ בַּֽעַל גְּבוּרוֹת Who is like You, Master of mighty deeds,

וּמִי דּֽוֹמֶה לָּךְ and who can be compared to You?

מֶֽלֶךְ מֵמִית וּמְחַיֶּה King Who causes death and restores life,

וּמַצְמִֽיחַ יְשׁוּעָה: and causes deliverance to sprout forth.

מִי כָמֽוֹךָ אַב הָרַחֲמִים Who is like You merciful Father,

זוֹכֵר יְצוּרָיו לְחַיִּים Who remembers His creatures for life,

בְּרַחֲמִים: in His mercy.

וְנֶאֱמָן אַתָּה And You are faithful

לְהַחֲיוֹת מֵתִים: to restore the dead to life.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy,

מְחַיֵּה הַמֵּתִים: Resurrector of the dead.

The Ark is opened

שֻׁלַּֽחְתִּי בְּמַלְאֲכוּת I have been sent on a mission

סֶֽגֶל חֲבוּרָה. by Your chosen company,

שׁוֹמְרֵי אֱמוּנָתְךָ preservers of Your faith,

וּמְיַחֲדֶֽיךָ בְּמוֹרָא. Who affirm Your Unity with awed reverence;

שָׁפַֽכְתִּי שִֽׂיחַ I have poured out my speech

לְבַקֵּשׁ עֲתִירָה. to beseech [with] prayer.

שְׁמַע יְהֹוָה קוֹלִי אֶקְרָא: Hear my voice, Adonoy, when I call.

The Ark is closed

Chazzan and congregation:

יִמְלֹךְ יְהֹוָה לְעוֹלָם Adonoy will reign forever;

אֱלֹהַֽיִךְ צִיּוֹן your God, Tziyon,

לְדֹר וָדֹר throughout all generations!

הַלְלוּיָהּ: Praise God.

וְאַתָּה קָדוֹשׁ And You, Holy One,

יוֹשֵׁב תְּהִלּוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל. are enthroned upon the praises of Yisrael.

אֵל נָא: Almighty, we beseech You.

The Ark is opened and the following is said responsively:

אַתָּה הוּא אֱלֹהֵינוּ: You are our God,

בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ: in heaven and upon earth,

גִּבּוֹר וְנַעֲרָץ: mighty and revered!

דָּגוּל מֵרְבָבָה: Surrounded with myriad angels,

הוּא שָׂח וַיֶּהִי: He spoke and it [the world] was!

וְצִוָּה וְנִבְרָאוּ: He commanded and all was created!

זִכְרוֹ לָנֶצַח: His mention [Name] is eternal!

חַי עוֹלָמִים: טְהוֹר עֵינַיִם: Life of [all] the worlds, He is of pure eyes!

יוֹשֵׁב סֵתֶר: He dwells in concealment,

כִּתְרוֹ יְשׁוּעָה: His crown is deliverance!

לְבוּשׁוֹ צְדָקָה: His garment is righteousness,

מַעֲטֵהוּ קִנְאָה: His robe is zeal!

נֶאְפָּד נְקָמָה: He is clothed with vengeance

סִתְרוֹ יוֹשֶׁר: His secret is uprightness!

עֲצָתוֹ אֱמוּנָה: פְּעֻלָּתוֹ אֱמֶת: His counsel is faithful, His work is truth!

צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר: He is just and upright,

קָרוֹב לְקוֹרְאָיו He is near to those who call upon Him

בֶּאֱמֶת: in truth!

רָם וּמִתְנַשֵּׂא: Exalted and uplifted,

שׁוֹכֵן שְׁחָקִים: He dwells in the heavens!

תּוֹלֶה אֶרֶץ עַל בְּלִימָה: He suspends the earth in space!

חַיּ וְקַיָּם He is living and enduring,

נוֹרָא וּמָרוֹם וְקָדוֹשׁ: awesome, exalted and holy!

The Ark is closed:

When the first day of Rosh Hashana occurs on Shabbos, continue on page 526.

The following is said responsively:

שְׁמוֹ מְפָאֲרִים His Name is glorified

עֲדַת חֶבְלוֹ. by the congregation of His bond,²See Devarim 32:9. “Yaakov is the bond of His inheritance (יעקֹב חבל נחלתו‍ֹ).”

וְנַעֲרָץ בְּאֶרְאֶלֵּי קֹֽדֶשׁ הִלּוּלוֹ. and He is revered by His holy angels,

וּבְהֵיכָלוֹ and in His Sanctuary

כָּבוֹד אוֹמֵר כֻּלּוֹ. קָדוֹשׁ: His glory is proclaimed by all. Holy is He.

שׁוֹמְרֵי מִצְוֹתָיו Those who preserve His commandments

עוֹד יְשׁוּבוּן לְבִצָּרוֹן. will return to their stronghold [Yerushalayim];³See Zecharyah 9:12

נִדְבָּרִים יְרֵאָיו when those who fear Him, converse

בְּהַכְשֵׁר וְיִתָּרוֹן. in the intricacies of His Torah,⁴See Maseches Shabbos 63a

וַיַּקְשֵׁב יְהֹוָה וַיִּשְׁמָע Adonoy listens and hears,

וַיִּכָּתֵב and it is recorded

סֵֽפֶר זִכָּרוֹן. in the Book of Remembrance.⁵See Malachi 3:16

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He.

שַׁפְּרוּ מַעֲשֵׂיכֶם Improve your ways

וּבְרִית לֹא תוּפַר. and the covenant will not be annulled,

נַאֲקַתְכֶם יַאֲזִין He will give ear to your cry—

שְׁחָקִים שִׁפַּר. He Who adorned the heavens—

וְתִיטַב לַיהֹוָה and it will please Adonoy

מִשּׁוֹר פָּר. more than a bullock,⁶See Tehillim 69:32

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He.

שִׁבְטֵי מְקוֹרָאֲךָ The tribes of Your calling,

עֲלֵּה וְהַמְשֵׁל. uplift them and grant them dominion;

נְטִישׁוֹת צָרִים the branches of the enemy—

בְּהַתִּיזְךָ לְנַשֵּׁל. cut them down and cast them away,

כִּי לַיהֹוָה הַמְּלוּכָה וּמוֹשֵׁל. for the kingship is Adonoy’s and He rules.

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He.

שְׁבוּתֵֽנוּ מִמֶּרְחָק May our exiles from afar

עֲלוֹת לְהַר קָדְשׁוֹ. be led up to His holy mountain

[Yerushalayim],

וּנְפָאֲרֶֽנּוּ תָמִיד and may we glorify Him always

בִּדְבִיר מִקְדָּשׁוֹ. in the Holy of Holies in His temple,

כִּי זָכַר אֶת דְּבַר קָדְשׁוֹ. for He remembered His holy word,

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He.

שֶֽׁבַח מִגְדַּל עֹז A glorious tower of strength

שֵׁם הַגָּדוֹל. will His great Name be,

נֶֽצַח בְּתִתּוֹ לְמַלְכּוֹ when He grants victory to His King⁷This refers to the מֶלֶךְ הַמָשִׁיחַ, the Moshiach King.

עוֹז וּמִגְדֹּל. strength and greatness will also be His.

בַּיוֹם הַהוּא On that day,

יִתָּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל. a great shofar will be sounded.

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He!

כָּל ישְׁבֵי תֵבֵל All inhabitants of the world

וְשֹֽׁכְנֵי אָֽרֶץ. and dwellers of the earth,

יֹאמְרוּ תָמִיד will proclaim continually;

הִגְדִּיל יְהֹוָה לַעֲשׂוֹת בָּאָֽרֶץ. “Great wonders has Adonoy done on earth.”

וְהָיָה יְהֹוָה לְמֶֽלֶךְ And Adonoy will be King

עַל כָּל הָאָֽרֶץ. over the whole earth,

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He.

יִשְׁפֹּט תֵּבֵל He will judge the inhabitants of the world

בְּצֶֽדֶק. with righteousness,

וּלְאֻמִּים בְּמֵישָׁרִים. and nations with uprightness.

הָאֵל קָדוֹשׁ: The Almighty, Holy is He.

וְהוּא בְאֶחָד וּמִי יְשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ. He is One and who can refute Him?

וְנַפְשׁוֹ אִוְּתָה וַיָּֽעַשׂ. Whatever He desires, He does.

נוֹרָא וְקָדוֹשׁ: Awesome and Holy is He.

When the second day of Rosh Hashana occurs on Sunday, the following is said:

תָּעִיר וְתָרִֽיעַ. Arouse Yourself and sound Your shofar⁸We ask Hashem to sound the shofar of redemption, calling our dispersed brethren to gather on His holy mountain.—Mateh Levi

לְהַכְרִית כָּל מֵרִֽיעַ. to cut off all evildoers;⁹This refers to those who do evil against against our people.—Mateh Levi

וְתֻקְדַּשׁ You will be sanctified by those

בְּיוֹדְעֵי who know the [significance

לְהָרִֽיעַ. of the] shofar’s call.

קָדוֹשׁ. Holy is He!

מֶֽלֶךְ מְמַלֵּט מֵרָעָה. You are the King Who rescued from evil—

לְיוֹדְעֵי תְרוּעָה. those who know the shofar’s call.

הָאֵל קָדוֹשׁ: The Almighty, Holy is He!

מֶֽלֶךְ זְכוֹר Revered King, recall [the ram]

אָחוּז קֶֽרֶן. caught by its horns [in the thickets]—

לְתוֹקְעֵי לְךָ to those who sound

הַיּוֹם בְּקֶֽרֶן. the ram’s horn before You on this day.

נוֹרָא וְקָדוֹשׁ: Awesome and Holy is He!

שֶֽׁבַח מִגְדַּל עֹז A glorious tower of strength

שֵׁם הַגָּדוֹל. will His great Name be,

נֶֽצַח בְּתִתּוֹ לְמַלְכּוֹ when He grants victory to His King

עוֹז וּמִגְדֹּל. strength and greatness will also be His.

בַּיוֹם הַהוּא On that day,

יִתָּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל. a great shofar will be sounded.

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He!

אָדוֹן אִם מַעֲשִׂים אֵין בָּֽנוּ. Master, if we lack good deeds,

שִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל יַעֲמָד לָֽנוּ. let Your own great Name stand by us,

וְאַל תָּבוֹא בְמִשְׁפָּט עִמָּֽנוּ. and do not enter into judgment with us.

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He!

הֵן לֹא יַאֲמִין בִּקְדוֹשָׁיו. Behold, He does not trust His holy ones,

וְתָהֳלָה יָשִׂים בְּאֵילֵי תַרְשִׁישָׁיו. charging foolishness [even] to His angels,

וְאֵיךְ יִצְדְּקוּ how then can there be justification

קְרוּצֵי גוּשָׁיו. for those formed of clay?

קָדוֹשׁ: Holy is He!

The Ark is opened

וּבְכֵן וַיְהִי בִישֻׁרוּן מֶֽלֶךְ: And thus He was King in Jeshurun

The following is said responsively:

מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. אַמִּיץ הַמְּנֻשָּׂא. Most high King! Mighty and uplifted,

לְכָל רֹאשׁ מִתְנַשֵּׂא. He is uplifted over all rulers,

אוֹמֵר וְעוֹשֶׂה. He says and He does,

מָעוֹז וּמַחְסֶה. He is [our] stronghold and shelter,

נִשָּׂא וְנוֹשֵׂא. He is uplifted and He upholds [the universe]

מוֹשִׁיב מְלָכִים לַכִּסֵּא. He seats kings upon a throne.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

גִּבּוֹר בִּגְבוּרוֹת. Mighty in His mighty deeds,

קוֹרֵא הַדּוֹרוֹת. He calls each generation into being,

גּוֹלֶה נִסְתָּרוֹת. He reveals hidden things,

אִמְרוֹתָיו טְהוֹרוֹת. His words are pure,

יוֹדֵֽעַ סְפוֹרוֹת. He knows the count of the stars,

לְתוֹצָאוֹת מַזָּרוֹת. bringing them out at the proper time.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

הַמְפֹאָר בְּפִי כֹל. Glorified by the mouths of all,

וְהוּא כֹּל יָכוֹל. and He is able to accomplish all,

הַמְרַחֵם אֶת כֹּל. He is compassionate to all,

וְנוֹתֵן מִחְיָה לַכֹּל. and gives sustenance to all,

וְנֶעְלָם מֵעֵין כֹּל. He is hidden from the eyes of all,

וְעֵינָיו מְשׁוֹטְטוֹת בַּכֹּל. and His eyes range over all.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

זוֹכֵר נִשְׁכָּחוֹת. He remembers forgotten things,

חוֹקֵר טוּחוֹת. He scrutinizes [our] innermost parts.

עֵינָיו פְּקוּחוֹת. His eyes are [always] open,

מַגִּיד שֵׂחוֹת. He relates [to us] our every utterance,

אֱלֹהֵי הָרוּחוֹת. He is the God of the spirits [of all flesh],

אִמְרוֹתָיו נְכוֹחוֹת. His words are upright and just.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

טָהוֹר בִּזְבוּלָיו. Pure in His Dwelling Place,

אוֹת הוּא בְּאֶרְאֶלָּיו. distinguished among His angels,

אֵין עֲרוֹךְ אֵלָיו. there is no one to compare to Him

לִפְעֹל כְּמִפְעָלָיו. to accomplish His work

חוֹל שָׂם גְּבוּלָיו. He set the sand as a boundary

כַּהֲמוֹת יָם לְגַלָּיו. around the raging waves of the sea.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

כּוֹנֵס מֵי הַיָּם. He gathers the waters of the sea,

רוֹגַע גַּלֵּי יָם. He quiets the waves of the sea,

סוֹעֵר שְׁאוֹן דָּכְיָם. [at times] He causes the raging waves to roar

מְלֹא הָעוֹלָם דַּיָּם. with sufficient water to engulf the world;

מַשְׁבִּיחָם בַּעְיָם. yet He stills them with His power,

וְשָׁבִים אָחוֹר וְאַיָּם. and they turn back and are no more.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

מוֹשֵׁל בִּגְבוּרָה. He rules with might,

דַּרְכּוֹ His way [of retribution]

סוּפָה וּסְעָרָה. is like a whirlwind and storm¹⁰This refers to the quickness of Hashem’s punishment of the wicked. See Ibn Ezra to Nachum 1:3.

עוֹטֶה אוֹרָה. He is enwrapped in light,

לַֽיְלָה כַּיּוֹם לְהָאִֽירָה. making the night bright as day,

עֲרָפֶל לוֹ סִתְרָה. thick darkness conceals Him,

וְעִמֵּהּ שְׁרֵא נְהוֹרָא. yet light abides with Him.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

סִתְרוֹ עָבִים. He is concealed by thick clouds,

סְבִיבָיו לְהָבִים. He is encircled by flames,

רְכוּבוֹ כְּרוּבִים. His chariot are the Cherubim;

מְשָׁרְתָיו שְׁבִיבִים. His servants are the flashes of lightning,

מַזָּלוֹת וְכוֹכָבִים. the constellations and stars

הִלּוּלוֹ מַרְבִּים. add to His praise.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

פּוֹתֵֽחַ יָד וּמַשְׂבִּֽיעַ. He opens His hand and satisfies,

צוֹרֵר מַֽיִם וּמַנְבִּֽיעַ. He binds up the waters and releases them

יַבֶּֽשֶׁת לְהַטְבִּֽיעַ. to water the earth with rain,

לִשְׁלִישׁ וְלִרְבִֽיעַ. three or four [months or periods a year];¹¹See Amos 4:7

יוֹם לְיוֹם יַבִּֽיעַ. day to day makes speech flow,

שִׁבְחוֹ לְהַבִּֽיעַ. uttering His praise.¹²See Tehillim 19:3. The daily renewal of the activities of creation, beginning with sunrise, stir mankind to proclaim Hashem’s praises.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

קָדוֹשׁ וְנוֹרָא. בְּמוֹפֵת וּבְמוֹרָא. Holy and Awesome in wonder and reverence,

מְמַדֵּי אֶֽרֶץ the measurements of the earth,

קָרָא. He proclaimed,

וְאֶֽבֶן פִּנָּתָהּ and its cornerstone,

יָרָה. He hurled down [from the heavens];

וְכָל הַנִּבְרָא. and all that was created,

לִכְבוֹדוֹ בָרָא. He created for His glory.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. Forever will He reign, the most high King!

שׁוֹמֵֽעַ אֶל אֶבְיוֹנִים. He hears [the cries of] the needy,

וּמַאֲזִין חִנּוּנִים. and gives ear to supplications;

מַאֲרִיךְ רְצוֹנִים. He extends [the periods of] His conciliation

וּמְקַצֵּר חֲרוֹנִים. and shortens [the periods of] His anger.

רִאשׁוֹן לָרִאשׁוֹנִים. He is First

וְאַחֲרוֹן לָאַחֲרוֹנִים. and He is the Last.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: Forever will He reign.

The Ark is closed and the next two verses are said silently:

מֶֽלֶךְ אֶבְיוֹן. Earthly king,

בָּלָה וָרָד שַֽׁחַת. he perishes and descends to destruction,

בִּשְׁאוֹל וּבְתַֽחַת. to the lower world and below;

בְּלֵאוּת בְּלִי נַֽחַת. he is exhausted, without rest,

עַד מָתַי יִמְלֹךְ: how long will he reign?

מֶֽלֶךְ אֶבְיוֹן. תְּנוּמָה תְּעוּפֶֽנּוּ. Earthly king, sleep overtakes him,

תַּרְדֵּמָה תְּעוֹפֲפֶֽנּוּ. deep slumber overtakes him;

תֹּֽהוּ יְשׁוּפֶֽנּוּ. emptiness presses on him,

עַד מָתַי יִמְלֹךְ: how long will he reign?

The Ark is opened and the prayer concluded:

אֲבָל מֶֽלֶךְ עֶלְיוֹן. שׁוֹפֵט הָאֱמֶת. But, the most high King is the true judge,

מַעְבָּדָיו אֱמֶת. His works are true,

עוֹשֶׂה חֶֽסֶד וֶאֱמֶת. He does kindness and truth,

וְרַב חֶֽסֶד וֶאֱמֶת. and He is abundant in kindness and truth,

נְתִיבָתוֹ אֱמֶת. His path is truth

חוֹתָמוֹ אֱמֶת. and His seal is truth.

לַעֲדֵי עַד יִמְלֹךְ: Forever will He reign!

The Ark remains open and the following verses of praise and tribute are said responsively:

יְהֹוָה מֶלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל שִׁנְאַנֵּי שַֽׁחַק. All the heavenly angels

בְּאֹֽמֶר מַאְדִּירִים. with [these] words proclaim:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל שֽׁוֹכְנֵי שֶֽׁקֶט. all who dwell on earth,¹³The word שֶׁקֶט actually means serenity or stability. The earth is viewed as a stable planet.

בִּבְרָכָה מְבָרְכִים. with blessing bless Him

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: [saying]: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּגֹֽבַהּ מַגְדִּילִים. Both [angels and men] loftily affirm:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל מַלְאֲכֵי מַֽעְלָה. All the angels on high

בְּדֵעָה מַדְגִּילִים. perceptively raise banners [proclaiming]:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל מֽוֹשְׁלֵי מַֽטָּה. all the rulers of the earth:

בְּהַלֵּל מְהַלְלִים. with praise, [declare]:

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. Both [angels and men]

בְּוַדַּאי מוֹדִים. with certainty acknowledge:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל עָרִיצֵי עֶלְיוֹנִים. All the mighty [angels] above,

בְּזֶֽמֶר מְזַמְּרִים. chant, with song:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל עוֹבְרֵי עוֹלָמִים. all who pass through the world

בְּחַֽיִל מְחַסְּנִים. praise Him for His might [declaring]:

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּטַֽעַם מְטַכְּסִים. Both appropriately arrange

[His praise saying]:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל וְעֽוּדֵי וַֽעַד. All [angels] gathered in assembly

בְּיֽשֶׁר מְיַפִּים. correctly adorn Him [proclaiming]:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל וָתִֽיקֵי וֶֽסֶת. all who are conscientious in their customs,

בְּכֽשֶׁר מְכַלְלִים. properly glorify Him, declaring:

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. Both [angels and men]:

בְּלַֽהַג מְלַהֲגִים. studiously, [pronounce]:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל נְדִיבֵי נְדָבוֹת. All the generous [angels]

בְּמַאֲמָר מְמַלְלִים. with speech, proclaim:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל נִכְבַּדֵּי נֹֽעַם. all those honored with the Torah,¹⁴The word נֹעַם, pleasantness refers to the Torah “whose ways are ways of pleasantness, דְרָכֶיהָ דַרְכֵי נֹעַם.”

בְּנִצּֽוּחַ מְנַצְּחִים. triumphantly declare:

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King.

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּשִֽׂיחַ מְשׂוֹחֲחִים. Both [angels and men] with speech affirm:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל בַּעֲלֵי בִינָה. All the angels of peerless wisdom,

בְּעִלּוּי מְעַלִּים. with everlasting praise, [proclaim]:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל בְּרוּאֵי בְרִיָּה. all created beings,

בְּפֶֽצַח מְפַצְּחִים. with exultation; shoutingly declare:

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּצִפְצוּף מְצַפְצְפִים. Both [angels and men] harmoniously affirm:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל רִשְׁפֵּי רוּמָה. All the fiery angels on high

בְּקוֹל מַקְדִּישִׁים. with loud voice, sanctify Him;

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל רָֽאשֵׁי רוֹן. all the leaders of song¹⁵The nation of Yisrael is referred to as the “leaders of song.” This is based on the Talmud, “the angels on high do not sing Hashem’s praises until Yisrael has completed its prayers.” See Maseches Chulin 91b.

בְּרֶֽנֶן מְרַנֲּנִים. with exultation, sing out,

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּשִׁירָה מְשׁוֹרְרִים. Both [angels and men] melodiously sing,

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל יַקִּֽירֵי יֹֽפִי. All the angels of precious beauty

בְּתֹֽקֶף מְתַנִּים. with might proclaim,

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל יוֹשְׁבֵי יִשּׁוּב. all inhabitants of earth

בְּיִחוּד מְיַחֲדִים. in unison proclaim His Oneness, [declaring]

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּאֶֽדֶר מְאַדְּרִים. Both [angels and men] gloriously affirm:

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל צוֹבְאֵי צָבָא. All the heavenly legions

בְּלֶֽמֶד מְלַמְּדִים. skillfully proclaim,

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל צְנוּפֵי צְפִירָה. all those adorned with the crown of Torah,¹⁶See Yeshaya 28:5

בְּצֶֽדֶק מַצְדִּיקִים. with righteousness, declare,

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּחַֽיִל מְחַזְּרִים. Both [angels and men] with might, repeat,

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל חֲיָֽלֵי חֹֽסֶן. All the mighty hosts

בַּחֲרָדָה מְחַלִּים. with trembling proclaim:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל חֲשֽׁוּקֵי חֶֽמֶד. all who delight in the Torah

בְּחָזְקָה מְחַזְּקִים. strongly declare,

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. בְּנִגּוּן מְנַגְּנִים. Both [angels and men] with a tune, sing out,

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

כָּל קְדוֹשֵׁי קָדוֹשׁ. All the holiest of angels

בִּקְדֻשָּׁה מַקְדִּישִׁים. sanctify Him with holiness [proclaiming],

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל קְבוּצֵי קָהָל. all those assembled in congregations

בְּקֽשֶׁט מְקַשְּׁטִים. with truth adorn Him [declaring],

יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. Both [angels and men]

בְּנֹֽעַם מַנְעִימִים. with sweet melody, chant,

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King.

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King.

כָּל חַשְׁמַלֵּי זִקִּים. All the flaming angels,

לַבְּקָרִים מִתְחַדְּשִׁים. created daily [proclaim],

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ: Adonoy is King;

כָּל תַּרְשִֽׁישֵׁי גֹֽבַהּ. all the lofty angels

בִּדְמָמָה מְלַחֲשִׁים. יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ: in whispers declare, Adonoy was King;

אֵֽלּוּ וָאֵֽלּוּ. Both alike,

בְּשִׁלּוּשׁ מְשַׁלְּשִׁים. with three-fold sanctification affirm,

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ: Adonoy will be King:

יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהֹוָה מָלָךְ Adonoy is King, Adonoy was King.

יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: Adonoy will be King forever.

וּבְכֵן And thus

לְךָ הַכֹּל יַכְתִּֽירוּ: all acknowledge You their Sovereign,

לְאֵל to the Almighty

עוֹרֵךְ דִּין: Who apportions judgment;

לְבוֹחֵן לְבָבוֹת Who examines hearts

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְגוֹלֶה עֲמוּקוֹת Who reveals depths [of the heart]

בַּדִּין: in judgment;

לְדוֹבֵר מֵישָׁרִים Who speaks uprightly

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְהוֹגֶה דֵעוֹת בַּדִּין: Who utters knowledge in judgment;

לְוָתִיק to Him Who is steadfast,

וְעֹֽשֶׂה חֶֽסֶד בְּיוֹם דִּין: and yet deals kindly on the day of judgment;

לְזוֹכֵר בְּרִיתוֹ בַּדִּין: Who recalls His covenant in judgment;

לְחוֹמֵל מַעֲשָׂיו Who has pity on His works

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְטַהֵר חוֹסָיו Who purifies those who trust in Him,

בַּדִּין: in judgment;

לְיוֹדֵֽעַ מַחֲשָׁבוֹת Who knows the thoughts of man

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְכוֹבֵשׁ כַּעֲסוֹ בַּדִּין: Who suppresses His anger in judgment;

לְלוֹבֵשׁ צְדָקוֹת Who is clothed in righteousness

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְמוֹחֵל עֲו‍ֹנוֹת בַּדִּין: Who forgives iniquities in judgment;

לְנוֹרָא תְהִלּוֹת Who is awesome in praise

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְסוֹלֵֽחַ לַעֲמוּסָיו Who pardons those borne by Him,

בַּדִּין: in judgment;

לְעוֹנֶה לְקוֹרְאָיו Who answers those who call upon Him

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְפוֹעֵל רַחֲמָיו בַּדִּין: Who exercises His compassion in judgment;

לְצוֹפֶה נִסְתָּרוֹת Who scrutinizes secrets

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְקוֹנֶה עֲבָדָיו בַּדִּין: Who acquires His servants, in judgment;

לְרַחֵם עַמּוֹ Who has compassion on His people

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment;

לְשׁוֹמֵר אֹהֲבָיו Who preserves those who love Him,

בַּדִּין: in judgment;

לְתוֹמֵךְ תְּמִימָיו Who supports His perfect ones

בְּיוֹם דִּין: on the day of judgment.

וּבְכֵן And thus

וּלְךָ תַעֲלֶה קְדֻשָּׁה. unto You may [our] sanctification ascend,

כִּי אַתָּה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ: for You our God are King!

The Ark is closed
