MISHNAH: They spread a byssus sheet61The same material from which the white garments are made which the High Priest wears for the special functions on the Day of Atonement. between him and the people; he undressed, stepped down, and immersed himself, came up and dried himself with a towel. They brought him the golden garments62The eight garments which the High Priest wears all year long, of which the diadem was pure gold and the coat, belt, and breast-shield contained gold., and he dressed, and sanctified hands and legs.
They brought him the daily sacrifice; he cut it,68Since the entire service of the Day of Atonement has to be performed by the High Priest himself, he has a problem in that he has to slaughter the sheep (and later the other sacrifices) while at the same time receiving the blood, which has to be that pumped out by the heart, not what is flowing out later. Therefore he has to cut the legal minimum, throat and esophagus, and let another Cohen cut the carotid arteries, which action, while necessary for the slaughter, does not formally fall under the definition of שחט “to cut the throat”. and another completed the slaughter for him. He received the blood and poured it. He entered to burn the incense, to clean the lights, to sacrifice69On the large altar in the inner courtyard, outside the sanctuary/ the head, the limbs, the pan-baked breads, and the wine.
