Wine after the meal intoxicates, wine with the meal does not intoxicate108Tosaphot (in Babli 117b s.v. רביעי deduce from here that drinking water is permitted between the third and the fourth cups..
רִבִּי סִימוֹן בְשֵׁם רִבִּי אִינַייְנִי בַּר סִיסַיי. מִינֵי זֶמֶר. רִבִּי יוֹחָנָן אָמַר. מִינֵי מְתִיקָה. שְׁמוּאֵל אָמַר. כְּגוֹן עַרְדִּילֵי וְגוֹזָלַיָּא דַחֲנַנְיָה בַּר שִׁילַת. Rebbi Simeon in the name of Rebbi Inainy bar Sisay: kinds of songs109He reads the word as ἐπικῶμιον “drinking song”, one of the more objectionable aspects of the κῶμος. The other explanations do not seem to be based on any Greek word. Pesachim.119b">Babli 119b.. Rebbi Joḥanan says, sweets. Samuel says, truffles and chick pigeons prepared by Ḥanania bar Shilat.
