משנה: נָטַל מִמֶּנָּה כֶרְכִּר אָסוּר בַּהֲנָאָה. אָרַג בּוֹ אֶת הַבֶּגֶד הַבֶּגֶד אָסוּר בַּהֲנָאָה. נִתְעָרֵב בַּאֲחֵרִים כּוּלָּן אֲסוּרִין בַּהֲנָאָה. רִבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר יוֹלִיךְ הֲנָאָה לְיָם הַמֶּלַח. אָֽמְרוּ לוֹ אֵין פִּדְיוֹן לַעֲבוֹדָה זָרָה׃ MISHNAH: If he took from it [wood to make] a weaver’s shuttle274Reading with the Halakhah (and Maimonides’s autograph Mishnah) כרכד, Greek κερκίς, -ίδος., it is forbidden for usufruct. If he used it to weave cloth the cloth is forbidden for usufruct. If it was mixed up with others, all are forbidden for usufruct275Same argument as in Note 271.. Rebbi Eliezer says, he should bring his profit to the Dead Sea272Where the coins are corroded and destroyed. Obviously R. Eliezer must mean not only the profit but the entire value of the forbidden loaf.. They said to him, idols cannot be redeemed.

HALAKHAH: “If he took from it [wood to make] a weaver’s shuttle,” etc. 276A somewhat truncated version of a passage in ˋOrlah3:1, Notes 77–81. Rebbi Ḥaggai said, when I descended from a ship I found Rebbi Jacob bar Aḥa sitting and asked him. “If he took from it [wood to make] a weaver’s shuttle, it is forbidden for usufruct. If he used it to weave cloth the cloth is forbidden for usufruct.” But did we not state277Mishnah 5:13: “If libation wine (forbidden for usufruct by the idolatrous act) fell into a cistern (of wine), all is forbidden for usufruct. Rabban Simeon ben Gamliel (whom practice follows) says, it should all be sold to a Gentile except for the value of libation wine in it.” Why could the cloth not be sold except for the value of the one forbidden piece?, “it should all be sold to a Gentile except for the value of the libation wine in it”? Rebbi Jacob bar Aḥa said, Ḥaggai raised the question, Ḥaggai resolved it. What is it? There people do not buy278In a society where Gentiles actually make libations to their gods it practically is impossible for Jews to buy wine from them. Therefore there is no danger that the forbidden wine would end up in the hands of a Jew. The strict rule of Mishnah 15 is not a consequence of the laws of forbidden usufruct but of the necessity to keep the forbidden items out of the hands of Jews. from the Gentile; but here people buy cloth from the Gentile.
