Hif. - הִרְעִיב 1) same. Mekh. l. c. ה׳ האכילו when Israel was hungry, he (the Lord) gave him food. —2) to starve, subject to privation. Succ. l. c. Snh. 65ᵇ (ref. to Deut. XVIII, 11 דורש אל המתים) זה המַרְעִיב עצמו וכ׳ that is he who fasts and spends the night in the cemetery in order that the spirit of impurity (unholy inspiration) may rest upon him.
