הכוס. ככוס חרבות ויש אומרים שהוא נכסה מעין אדם על כן ישכון במקום שאין שם יישוב: AND THE LITTLE OWL. The word kos (little owl) is similar to the word kos (owl) in as an owl of the waste places (Ps. 102:7). Some say that the bird is hidden (nikhseh) from the eyes of people. It therefore rests in uninhabited places.

השלך. יש אומרים עוף מנהג תולדתו להשליך ילדיו: AND THE CORMORANT. Some say that the shalakh (cormorant) is so called because its nature is to cast (le-haslikh) its offspring down.

ינשוף. עוף יעופף בנשף כי לא יראה ביום מפני להט אור השמש: AND THE GREAT OWL. The yanshuf (great owl) is a bird that flies at night (neshef), for it cannot see during the day because of the brightness of the sun light.
